The Dragon Rider
Firedrake, a young dragon, receives a frightening warning one night: Humans are planning to destroy the valley in which he lives! All the dragons must flee. Their only refuge is a place above the clouds called the Rim of Heaven--which may not even exist. Firedrake boldly volunteers to go ahead first. As he embarks on his journey, he meets Ben, a runaway boy. Together, the...more

I tried very hard to get into this book, but like Ink Heart it just didn't catch me. Something about the way Funke writes puts a distance between me and the story that just makes it impossible for me become fully engaged. The classic fantasy archetype of friends on a quest, tons of magical creatures, etc is common and this text hardly adds anything new to the field.
Funke writes with a wealth of detail that is occasionally distracting and over-done. Her characters feel 2D, lacking real depth and...more

I gave this three stars, because I personally wanted to give it two, but I think it probably deserves four. I know that for other people, especially the audience it's actually intended for (children/YA), it would be a great book, and they'd love it. I didn't really get into the book, and it's not the author's fault at all. It was just too easy a book for me to really enjoy. The bad guy was really bad, the good guys were really good, and even the character who switched sides made all the right de...more
I think it's important to note that I listened to the audio version of this book because it is, without a doubt, the reason I disliked it so much. Funke's story seems pretty good, and if I had read it, I imagine it would have been closer to 3 or 4 stars.
However, it must be said that the narrator Brendon Fraser is, unequivocally, the worst narrator I have ever heard in the 150+ audio books I have listened to over the last few years. Here are just a few examples of why he is so bad:

Dragon Rider is a good dragon book that doesn't delve too deeply into dragon lore, preferring to stand on it's own as more of an adventure tale involving dragons. The premise of the book is that the lair of a group of dragons is threatened and one of their own - Firedrake - is the only one willing and able to set out and explore the scary world to find a better place for his clan to live: a mysterious place called the Rim of Heaven.

students who want an easy, yet longer fantasy story.
It took me forever to finish this book! I thought some of the ideas were very clever, but I never had that "ooh, I like this so much that I must finish this book now" feeling. In fact, I started and finished many other books while still in the middle of this one. On the other hand, many of the students in my school have enjoyed this book a lot. I recommend it to students who are not quite ready for fantasy stories at higher reading levels like Harry Potter or Artemis Fowl, but still want to read...more
I read this ages ago and loved it, and then recently listened to it with my kids. The narration is by Brendan Fraser and is awesome! I don't know if Cornelia Funke picked him to be Inkheart before or after he had narrated this book, but I can see why she did. He's amazing. Oh yeah, the story is good too. :) It's a nice journey, with fun characters and a bit of mystery and suspense. Great for kids in the 6-8 range, whereas the Inkheart books are really for a slightly older crowd.
This book is very well written is one of my favorite books written Cornelia Funke. My favorite thing about this book is that it actually feels like you are in the story and one of the many companions. This book is about a dragon and a brownie (a lager squirle like creature) who set out to find a place where the other dragons can hide. This book rises and falls so many times you can't even tell where the rising and the falling actionis. Also, my favorite thing about this book is that it is about d...more

Human beings, fabulous creatures, myth and fairy tale, reality, legends coming true---this is what you get when you take a dragon in search of a new, yet ancient, home and boy who never had home or family, pair them up with a forest brownie and send then in search of the Rim of Heaven.
I have to say, for all the fantasy I've read, I ran across some creatures here that I didn't recall having heard of. And each facbulous creature is fascinating in its own right, each with their own quirks and stori...more

Girls and Boys 10+
Dragon Rider is a great book for girls and boys 10 years old and up. It is a fantasy genre and is a wonderful book by Cornelia Funke.
When humans threaten their home, the dragons must seek another place to live. Firedrake, his brownie friend, Sorrell, and their new human friend, Ben, set out on a search for the legendary Rim of Heaven—a chain of snow-peaked mountains said to be located somewhere in the Himalayas. According to legend, the Rim of Heaven is a home to countless silver dragons that h...more

I first saw this book on my school library shelf in fourth grade. I remember thinking, 'Cool! That looks like a really good book!' I actually think that book might have been my first fantasy book. I tried to understand it, but I was more fascinated by the characters than anything else. The characters, to me, were vivid as different hues on a beautiful painting, all different, all orchestrating something much bigger and grand. Although I didn't finish it (it seemed just a little too boring), late...more
I loved this book. The story is about Firedrake, a dragon who ventures to find a new home. Along the way he meets a human who helps him on his quest to find the legendary Rim of Heaven and protect it from the evil automatonic dragon, Nettlebrand, whose soul purpose is to hunt and kill dragons. The story overall was good. It was actually an English translation from German so I often wonder if the book in it's original language was more interesting. In reality as I look back on it, I find that the...more
Dragon Rider was an out of this world read. Despite the fact that it was meant for a younger crowd, I enjoyed every minute. This 523 paged story takes you on a classical adventure in which contain mythical creatures such as Dragons, dwarves, elves, and sea-serpents, and many more. Cornelia Funke puts the reader into the story and tells it on the back of a dragon named Firedrake with passengers named Ben, and Sorrel, and Twigleg. These heroes must help Firedrake find a new place for him and the r...more

I think this book is awesome. If anybody is reading this review and like adventure, action and dragons, then you have to read this book no matter what. This book is about a dragon named Firedrake and lives in a land that humans want to takeover and destroy. So he sets off to find a place in the Himalayas called the Rim of Heaven. The only one with the map to get there is a rat so Firedrake goes to find the rat and while trying to find him, he goes to a warehouse where a homeless boy named Ben (w...more

Cornelia Funke has written a book that I wish was able to be given negative stars. The entire plot and characters just seemed detached. It all just seemed 'unrealistic.' Dragon Rider is about a dragon named Firedrake with a companion named Sorrel. They are sent to search for a new home where they will be left undisturbed by the invasive species, the humans. An elder dragon tell them about a mythical cave, called the Rim of Heaven. They stumble upon a boy as they embarked on their mysterious adventure. The only thing stopping them was a dangerous predator that moved like a shark but resembled a dragon. With the help of the boy, Ben, and a few other allies, it is...more

I read this book a long time ago simply thinking that it was a light and easy read. I was actually quite surprised that such a central theme of greed was really evident throughout the book. The silver dragons are unable to live in peace because the humans are coming to take over their land (although they don't really need it). When Firedrake attempts to find a safe haven for every silver dragon, he faces an enemy golden draconoid named Nettlebrand who wants to hunt all the weaker silver dragons....more
I'm doing a unit on dragon stories for 10 to 12 year olds, and this was probably my favourite of all of the books I read. It is a really solid fantasy novel, and I liked the fact that a young boy helps Firedrake (the dragon) in his quest to find the Rim of Heaven (a safe place for the dragons to retreat from human encroachment). In the back of my edition, Funke has some really interesting facts about dragons -- and the fact that there have been stories about them in ALL cultures since we've had...more
When I was a kid, the books I read either had to do with animals, like The Incredible Journey and Tizz, A Pony or fantasy, such as The Shy Stegasaurus and The Grey King. Every once in a while, I'd read mysteries - the Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew (and I never missed the Hardy Boys when they were on TV...but that's another story entirely).
Things haven't changed all that much in my reading tastes since then. I'm still happiest reading books where animals and/or fantasy are involved. A lot of the times...more

This is another fantasy YA by Cornelia Funke, however, it is geared towards a slightly younger audience than her Inkheart series.
This book is about how Firedrake (a dragon) and Sorrell (a brownie--mythical creature, not chocolate dessert) team up with human Ben and a few other unlikely characters to find the Rim of Heaven, supposedly a dragon haven, while at the same time, trying to avoid running into Nettlebrand, the Golden One.
