This is one of Philip Margolin's early novels. It has the protagonist, David Nash, beginning to doubt the legal system, after he has won several trials where the defendants were pretty amoral.

So, he is glad to get a case where he is almost certain the client is innocent--a fellow lawyer with a good reputation. Then he meets the client's wife--and finds out she is the woman he had a brief affair with. In an action which certainly would be considered questionable professional ethic More...

This story is based on a very interesting question; is every defendant entitled to the best defense money can buy. Our protagonist is a virtually unbeatable criminal defense attorney. He begins to worry about whether or not he is winning cases and putting criminals back on the street. Stir in his affair with a beautiful, married woman whose husband becomes a client and the recipe gets richer. The problem is I didn't like the people including the lawyer, David Nash. They came across as super More...

COMPELLING A MUST READ FOR EVERY LAW STUDENT

In addition to generate an ethical debate about the defense of crime offenders, entertains, providing other key elements like deep suspense, romance and police procedures. The author is skilled enough to pop deep suspense out of simple elements and as a result of that the plot becomes a blend of debate and mistery. I enjoyed it very much and could not put it down. This book is an example on how using simple everyday situations and characters More...

A defense lawyer is getting disenchanted with his job when he starts questioning the guilt or innocence of his clients. And situations arise where he is being manipulated and may be letting the guilty go free and the innocent go to jail. It was these psychological questions I enjoyed most. Did not care for the romance angle at all.

It was really good. Just when you thought you had figured it out who did it turns out to be the person who you wouldn't have thought it would be. The meaning the last innocent man defintely meant something in this book. Yes, the plotline was a little outdated but it was still amazing.

This book was on the chronicles list of best ever thrillers... Inexplicably. It reads like it was written by a second grader and the only reason I finished it was because I was too lazy to get up off the beach.

This book is good.... FOR ME TO POOP ON.

Fun little legal thriller. Some of the plot devices felt a little contrived and the story could have used some more meat. However, it was a fast great and the plot had a good number of twists and turns, so I was reasonably well satisfied.

Very good; early work by author of "Gone But Not Forgetten"; Defense attorney has second thoughts about his clients, a few twists make it interesting.

I really thought Thomas was innocent and up to the very end I was unsure how what the ending would be

It was ok. Nothing special. Lawyers, a murder, trials, blah blah blah.

This wasn't my favorite John Grisham and it was his first non-fiction (I believe), and he did fine with it...I was waffling between the 2 and 3 stars. What a sad story. What a waste, not reading it, but just the wasted years and everything involved with this story. It is hard to believe that so many people could get so many things wrong, especially when it involved a person's life. I am naive, I know, but I think I like it that way.

Lawyers, whores, cops, good people and idiots...sounds like a good book? It is for those of you that want to move your head else where. Pretty good ending. I have four more of Margolin's books to read...more to come.

Interesting because its true. Grisham's books are always an easy entertaining read to me, though the details got a little boring after a while -- possibily because I already knew the outcome (?).

Absolutely unbelievable. You keep thinking - this has to be fiction. There's no way that this miscarriage could happen in real life. It blew me away.
