As night-shift clerk at the go-to Quik-Mart for monsters with the munchies, Josh Caplan believes he’s seen it all. Battling lizard men, werewolves chasing cars in the parking lot . . . nothing fazes Josh anymore.

Or so he thinks, at least, until a yeti with poor communication skills drops a dead skunk on the checkout counter. Josh can’t figure what a living, breathing shag

first book 2,630 words for 99 cents
This book 3,600 words also 99 cents
6,230 words for $1.98 so no matter how enjoyable the short stories might be they just aren't worth it for me overall (i did the math after i pre-ordered this one) since they are such quick reads i end up buying too many of them and spending more than i would on a real book. Especially since there are so many great free short stories out there.

Done with my rant. About the story. It was cute and funny. I did like that but it w

Really great writing. This place is still interesting, and I am just curious about what will happen with Colin and his ghouls.
However barely 12 pages...That was just tooooooo short, not enough to hold my interest. If this was a serial with scheduled installments, I would be more into reading further or waiting for all of it to come out, and read together. This was just not packaged in a way that will hold my attention, and as good as the writing is, thst's just a shame.

My huge complaint is regarding the price and the words I get. Just like Bubbles said, for 0.99 cent and I only get about 3,000 words?? And when I read on my Kindle, the story really starts at 21% and ends at 92%?? That doesn't seem like a fair price.

Technical/price aside, I enjoy this short story. Although this time, I like it a bit less because there isn't enough Colin, the hot-vampire guy who is now Josh's lover. This more like a snippet of another night on Josh's life, when he must d

Recommends it for: Crazy funny mm book lovers :)
Weirdly funny and crazy! :)

This wasn't as good as the first one but it was still worth reading as I laughed like crazy :)

I couldn't even begin to explain how much fun it was to read :) Roll on the next one hahahaha

My heart feels a bit crushed after reading Peek-a-Boo. Hopes dashed even. Still enjoyed the humor and cute fun. Nothing makes me grin my evil grin wider than a tale with monsters mixed into our day-to-day monotony with mischief and magic! :) But….

This story did not pick up where Pretty Monsters left off. I actually adore when an author plays with time, but this was not playing—it was a leap! It was such a fun cliffhanger too—I was hanging on! *shakes head* This installment was a fun, quick snipp

This series is like a serial with tiny snippets about Josh's job coming to life. The plot is very original in its concept but because it is so super short there is little time for world building. I hope that Andrea and Riptide Publishing turn it into a true serial with one snippet coming out each month. Even better would to have them come out more often if possible.

I really enjoyed this book and I have to congratulate Andrea for fitting so much into 3,600 words. I believe that its harder to writ

2.5 Stars rounded up because of the humor and writing.

I didn't like this one as much as the first. I was a bit disappointed because there wasn't any development with the MC's or the plot. Basically, it was just a different short story involving Josh and a yeti with Colin thrown in at the end. I really like the story line so I hope the future books will expand on it.

Cute story, but it was too short for me to really get into it. By the time it gets going, it's over. That's really my only complaint though. It's a quick read and quite amusing. I'm waffling between 3.5 and 4 stars.

Fun and funny and adorable. What a delightful series. I'm hoping that the next ones might be just a little longer, though.

Some Favorite Quotes:
Josh's first impulse was to scream, but he bit his bottom lip instead. It seemed like a slightly less girly response to the bloody animal corpse on the counter.

He felt like screaming, and shitting his pants was still an option, but he didn't have a spare pair to change into, and no one wanted to be the stinky guy on the bus.

"We're monsters, you know. Th

Andrea Speed is one of those authors whose writing really suits my taste. I started reading her stories after reading her least popular book and then I read them all. I loved each and every one of them. I like her writing and her characters and I adore her sense of humor. Peek-a-Boo has many of these elements, but it is not without the flaws, especially as a part of the series.

The story is the second installment in Josh of the Damned series. We find Josh where we left him – in the Quik-

This review can be found at Brief Encounters Reviews.

I did not review the first story in this series here at Brief Encounters Reviews, but I did read it and enjoyed the humour. This story is pretty well explained in the blurb. Josh is still hanging out dealing with the riff-raff that come out of the hell portal, but this time there is a gigantic Yeti which insists on bringing him things, like dead animals and rotten logs. Yeti’s don’t speak or appear to understand English, however when Josh’s l

Peek-A-Boo is the second installment in Andrea Speed's Josh of the Damned series. It continues the story of Josh as he navigates work at the Quick-Mart, handling all sorts of creatures making their way out of the hell portal in the parking lot.

In Peek-A-Boo, Josh attracts a friendly yeti who won't stop giving him crazy things instead of payment. Just as he finally manages to convince the yeti he doesn't want his gifts, Josh is confront

I fell in love with Andrea Speed’s Josh of the Damned stories in Pretty Monsters. The follow-up to the first book, PEEK-A-BOO, is just as good and it had me laughing out loud right off the bat. You know you have a good story on your hands when you giggle continuously until the very end of the story. The story picks up a few months later after Pretty Monsters and we find Josh, still working the late shift at the Quik Mart, cleaning up after zombies, scaring an occasional werewolf away and falling ...more

Peek-a-Boo sees us back at the Quick-Mart with our intrepid, slacker hero, Josh. Inexplicably, my reader thinks it’s entitled Peek-a-Book. Anyway, something huge and hairy comes in and places a dead skunk on the counter. It can’t talk and copies Josh’s gestures. Josh convinces it to go then cleans up the mess. He then gets himself comfortable with a magazine and waits for the rest of the night to happen. Then the Sasquatch(?) returns with a rotted log, then he watches Josh through the doo

"There weren’t exactly a whole bunch of people beating down the door to become the night shift worker at this Quik-Mart. Nobody except Josh wanted the job."

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want the job either, certainly not when the yeti shows up with a dead skunk to pay for his purchases. Of course, with my odd sense of humor, I'd have had way more fun with that than Josh did. Poor Josh, he just wants him to take the nasty, dead thing off the counter and out of the store. Oh, and to stop playing peek

While I thought the first book in this series had great potential, the 15 page length was really disappointing. Just when the story was getting good it ground to a halt. I was waiting for this one to come out because I thought maybe the first book was more like a prologue and the next one would be full-length. But this one is only 12 pages? For the same 99 cent price? Sorry, that's not worth the bang for my buck. If this were done in the manner of Jordan Castillo Price's free serial shorts like ...more

This series is not only funny and creative but it crosses so many lines. It isn't strictly paranormal or romance or adventure. It is all of those things. The stories are little bites of the larger story that you can read pretty quickly. The quick shots of of story have a comic book type feel. It doesn't allow the reader to get too deep into the world without reading more than one of the stories at a time but each piece feels vivid as if you were watching a movie or reading a comic. If you would love a good giggle, pick up this short story of Josh of the Damned and prepare for a laugh. This is the second story in the series of short stories about a young man name Josh who works at a Quik Mart that just happens to have a hell portal in its parking lot. Its customers range from zombies looking for a frozen burrito fix (I don't look at frozen burritos quite the same way anymore), lizards after snacks, and the occasional Sasquatch. Oh and did I mention he has a vampire boyfrien ...more

Josh's job as a night clerk at the Quik-Mart is anything but 'normal'. At least it's interesting-when your customers are monsters that include zombies with a yen for frozen burritos. And though Josh believes there should be hazard pay, his job DOES come with its perks; his boyfriend Colin, who just happens to be a vampire. Then an unexpected attack has him wishing for more than a silver coated broomstick under the counter, yet he's surprised by his savior. Now he only needs a guide to understand ...more

I have to say that Ms. Speed kept me chuckling through this one as well.
And I do have to hand it to Andrea for keeping the story interesting and fresh... Well, when you read this story, it is not quite so fresh, hahahaha!

This series makes me happy. I don't care if it's not 100 pages per book, Josh and his customers have the magical power to bring me to them. I like Josh's voice, his acceptance of whatever the night dishes out to him. The rug monster was ugly cute and endearing in his perseverance, it made me laugh out loud with his antics and peek-a-boo and I should re-read it all again to list in how many different ways Josh called him. The cover art is pretty perfect and it makes the sweetest candy out of this ...more

I really love this series. The characters are funny. The story is different and interesting. My only complaint is the stories are too short! I am so ready for Josh to have a full length novel!

These are definitely whacky little shorts, but a lot of fun.

In this one, we learn the courtship rituals of yetis. LOL

Wish we got a little more Colin action though... *brow waggle*

Very funny but it's too short, especially for the price, and there isn't any romance in the book.
