Twelve unexplained phenomena with no apparent earthly explanation…

A dog-shaped gunpowder mark; an omen from ‘the other side’; a haunted house; a chilling séance; a case of split personalities; a recurring nightmare; an eerie wireless message; an elderly lady’s hold over a young man; a disembodied cry of ‘murder’; a young man’s sudden amnesia; a levitation experience; a mys...more

Interesting collection of stories. Some are better than the others. Not the usual garden-variety whodunit plots...although I am a sucker for those!!!

Most of the stories are psychological thrillers and/or deal with the supernatural, one way or the other. I suppose after watching TV shows like the X-Files and Supernatural, the stories were pretty tame. However, for the time when they were written, I thought the plots were quite impressive in how dark they were.

One thing though that is starting to...more

After having dealt with the classic doggie of Baskervilles, I figured out I might continue with the theme for a bit longer. I also thought it would be nice to read a real book for a change - instead of an ebook, that is.

The Hound of Death is a collection of 12 short stories that despite their differing themes and genres (!) form a nice, clean ensemble. The stories consist of "classic" ghost stories, ghost stories or mysteries with a touch of Scooby Doo (you know, in which there is a criminal of...more

Another short story collection, this time with a slant towards the supernatural and horror. I have to say that although I read this book fairly easily, I didn't especially enjoy any of the stories. In most cases the endings feel rushed and incomplete and I wasn't sure whether this was because of the short story format or whether Christie was trying to inject some suspense into the endings. I don't know whether it's just that this type of novel isn't my typical genre of reading but I just didn't...more

This book is a collection of short stories dealing with supernatural in one way or the other. Most of the stories have very cliche endings, which might have been novel endings for those times. As the book deals with supernatural one is not hinged only on endings but also on how the story progresses and the tension of unknown conveyed. She has done admirably there and I enjoyed reading her even after all those years.

Her writing is very crisp and thankfully does not have that flowery feeling of an...more

This is no ordinary book from Agatha Christie. This is a book of supernatural with mind boggling explanation on 12 mysteries.
Some tales were chilling enough to give me goosebump, while the rest were just baffled and poorly explained by the author.
The Hound of Death for me was so hard to grasp, because of too much relying on supernatural.
However, my favorite of all was The Strange Case of Sir Arthur Carmichael.
After all, despite of the supernatural element in each stories, you could still find t...more

I would give this short story collection a 3.5. I enjoyed most of the stories and liked the change in theme from her novels (even though I can't get enough of Hercule Poirot!). My biggest issue is that although they deal with supernatural elements or the appearance of them, I was able to predict the ending very early on for most of the stories. The ones that took me by surprise were the ones that I enjoyed the most! I would recommend the collection as part of the larger anthology of Agatha Chris...more

Sigh. Not only is she a brilliant Queen of crime fiction in so far as the novel is concerned. But I do believe her short stories may be her best works especially the Hound of Death and Mysterious Mr. Quin. These tales are haunting, intriguing, beautiful and ambiguous. Her approach has appeared more modern here than in any other of her collection of short stories. An urgent recommendation for all crime/murder/suspense fiction readers.

Points for trying, okay? Anyone who has written 70-odd books in the one genre can’t be faulted for trying their hand at something else. In her earlier years, Dame Agatha sought to experiment with the supernatural and macabre. Many of these short stories are supernatural in nature, and all but one of them are forgettable. Elements of the otherworldly would end up creating some of her finer books in the late period – "Endless Night", "Hallowe’en Party" - but Christie’s writing style simply doesn’t...more

This short story collection by the Queen of Crime involves more supernatural and unexplained phenomena than detectives and crime. They are all quite different aspects of supernatural activities, including hauntings, premonitions, ghost stories and even ectoplasm. A fairly gripping selection, though I think 'Witness for the Prosecution' and 'The Gipsy' were two that stood out a bit for quality.

A few short stories by the Lady of Crime : a bit of eerie, a hint of mystery, and of course some murders. Although I did not expect the eerie part, this book rather pleased me.
Agatha Christie is really an author I like to read in English, and not only because I can't stand translations anymore. Her style is clear, full of the elations that hide what we should not note.

A collection of short stories by Agatha Christie - all with a 'supernatural' element.

Overall the book was disappointing - the majority of the stories felt as though they were outlines / ideas that hadn't been fully developed. The only ones that felt complete were The Red Signal, Wireless, The Witness for the Prosecution, The Mystery of the Blue Jar and SOS.

Dark, haunting and chilling; I honestly couldn't get it out of my head after I finished it. Some of the stories were extremely creepy and is guaranteed to give you the shivers. Others are rather confusing, and the spiritual element makes you wonder whether it is all in the mind of the narrator, or whether it's a truly inexplicable event.

This is a book of short stories. In each one, the characters are well drawn, plots are excellent, and some well executed twists. In most cases, unfortunately, I felt the stories ended somewhat abruptly. A short further paragraph was needed. In some stories, it worked well, but one or two of them left me guessing what exactly had just happened....

Audiobook.

A bunch of short stories with a ghostly/paranormal bent. Not my favorite, I like her humor more and these seem to be patterned off of Arthur Conan Doyle.

I listened to Witness for the Prosecution, Blue Jar, Carmichael Case and Last Sceance.

Novel yang penuh kontradiksi antara segala sesuatu yang dapat dibuktikan; ilmu pengetahuan, dengan unsur supranatural. Berisi duabelas cerita bertema gothic yang selalu diakhiri dengan ending mengejutkan. Mendebarkan, dan seperti biasanya, really worth reading for mystery lovers.

This just about killed me. I'm not actually sure why I kept reading. At some point, all of the stories blended together. Then again, I'm neither a mystery nor a short story fan. Throw in a healthy scoop of occult and it's just not my style.

This is a collection of what I think of as Christie's "creepy" stories: the ones about premonitions, supernatural powers, and things like that. When I first read these as a teenager they creeped me out incredibly, but now I'm not so into them.
Joevarian
The only detective novel of Christie that shows some parapsychological phenomenon. Indeed, in real life, police detectives sometimes have to deal with supernatural phenomenon. And this novel surely wanted to show that. Overall, this book is good, but not great.
Randy Kurniawan
Non-material world does exist.
Maybe some people hardly believe to occultism. But believe me, there's a Mysterious Power outside there that control all of this.
If not, then does Life exist 'just' because of coincidence?
I bet not.
Saarthak Sachdeva
A really awe-inspiring storyline, with a plot radically different from the usual mystery-suspense books. In one word, splendiferous
Shawn Granger
Not my cup of tea & biscuits. Not a big fan of short stories. They were okay but too short.
Allison
Nice compilation of stories. Many were a little supernatural, which was different.
Kelley
The collection is a mixed bag in terms of quality, but the audiobook is narrated by THE Christopher Lee (!) and includes the amazing Witness for the Prosecution.

Agatha Christie also wrote romance novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott, and was occasionally published under the name Agatha Christie Mallowan.

Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller was born in Torquay, Devon, England, U.K., as the youngest of three. The Millers had two other children: Margaret Frary Miller (1879–1950), called Madge, who was eleven years Agatha's senior, and Louis Montant Miller (1880...more
