This is a great background to the city of Barcelona and the changes in post-Franco Spain. Toibin's early experience living in Barcelona in the 1970's and mastery of Catalan give him a unique insight into the development of the city. If you're going to visit Barcelona, this is a wonderful introduction to Catalan culture and history, but it's worth reading regardless for the fascinating material and Toibin's beautiful prose style.

Group of essays about the city (Barcelona), the country (Spain, Catalonia), the people (opinionated, passionate), the food (seemingly delicious), the politics (radical, extreme), the artists (Picasso, Miro, Dali), the wars (Civil War, WW2), the architecture (Gaudi, others) and other elements that make Barcelona and this region what it is. Short book that gives you an introduction to these topics for further reading.

anyone who is traveling to Barcelona
This book is incredible. If you have visited, or are planning to visit any part of Catalunia, specifically Barcelona, this gives you an insider/outsider perspective of the history of this incredible area, the cultural aspects and how they are applied, celebrated and glorified in modern day Barcelona Culture.

I forgot how good this book is, which covers all aspects of Barcelona's arty citizens and political history. It's a bit dated now, but history is history.
