Just won a copy of this through Goodreads giveaways. This is my first win. I am so excited to be getting this book. I look forward to reading and reviewing it for all my GR friends. This will be my first James Tabor novel. Love reading new authors. Stoked!!!

I’m pretty mixed on my thoughts of this book, and part of that is my fault. I read Frozen Solid as an ARC before ever hearing of this book, so reading this one after the second book in the series isn’t a good idea.
There are a number of different story threads, all related to the sudden threat of a devastating disease and why it exists. We get the military angle mostly from the doctor treating the first to become infected, scientists trying to find a cure, some from the group that started the di...more

Tabor’s nonfiction caving book, Blind Descent, was a real page-turner so I was excited when he came out with a novel. The story starts a little slowly and I found myself impatient for the caving to begin, but once I got through the first few chapters, I was hooked.

As thrillers go, this is a good one. It has all the obligatory ingredients: a feisty, damaged-goods heroine; a crack team of misfit specialists (with the potential for some love interest); a looming national disaster that could result in the deaths of millions; a race against time to prevent it; opposition from a secret cabal of greedy businessmen; a possible supernatural evil lurking in the background; more villains in case they're needed (in the shape of Mexican drug runners); and a mole, or s...more
When I was 12 years old my Cub Scout Troop spent the night in Cumberland Caverns, an extensive cave system in Tennessee. At one point we were instructed to turn off all the lights. To this day I get chills when I think about my first (and only) experience with complete and UTTER darkness.
"The Deep Zone" by James M. Tabor does a good job of imparting that sensation to his readers. His background expertise as a climber and dive master is represented quite strongly in the novel. The story itself is...more

In a style reminiscent of James Rollins, Jeff Long and Scott Sigler, this is an adventure story that has everything but the kitchen sink: greed, plots, politics, a deadly epidemic about to burst into the world, a small but intrepid team determined to stop it; throw in a mysterious cave with hidden dangers, drug traffickers and ex-Seals, and you have a fun mix. Never mind that the characters are mostly stereotyped place-holders. Skim over the lists of high-tech goodies that are rarely explained,...more
It all begins with the war in Afghanistan and a young soldier is shot. Medic care is provided immediately. Everything looked good.
But something went horribly, horribly wrong, and a strain of bacteria that would make Eboli look weak threatens to take out the US military forces.
If you like a good book, take a deep breath, you're about to go on a wild ride that won't let you put this book down until you've consumed it. And I seldom say that about any book these days.

I recently had the opportunity to preview James Tabor’s novel “The Deep Zone”, a thrilling, exciting and fun read very similar to Clive Cussler at his best. The characters were well developed and credible with the plot being frightfully believable.
The story begins with a plague breaking out in Afghanistan among our Army personnel. Heroic efforts to treat this awful disease meet in abject failure, resulting in a 90% fatality rate. The soldiers can’t be treated in Afghanistan as the disease progre...more

This is rather exhausting whirlwind thriller that doesn't relax you for a minute. I'm slighly out of breath just from reading. One of the conspiracies in this book is that someone has delibarately infected tampons with bacteria. Said sanitary equipment is also used by soldiers, and voilà, there is an epidemic of antibiotic multiresistant bacteria (ACE). Problem is that it has mutated and nothing works. There is an organization, BARDA, working on finding a new type of antibiotics, however, they h...more
When a deadly, flesh eating disease appears in wounded U.S. servicemen in Afghanistan, a group of scients is assembled to try to find a substance that could cure it. This is found at the bottom of a deep cave in Mexico.
Dr. Hallie Leland had worked for the government organization sponsoring the trip and had been fired from them in the past for what she felt was unjustified reasons. However, as a scientist, she agrees to lead the group to find this potentially life saving material.

I love a good scientific thriller, so when I saw a blurb that called THE DEEP ZONE James Rollins, a personal favorite, meets Journey To The Center of the earth, I knew it was going to be good.
I wasn't wrong.
For a first novel, James Tabor sure moves things deftly along, balancing two story lines to keep one flipping the pages. One is a trip by five people into a cave in Mexico, the deepest cave in the world, to retrieve more biological material for an antibiotic that might cure a new disease that...more

4 stars: Very good. Would recommend.
This book kind of looked like a generic thriller book at first, but the Kindle edition went on sale for .99 so I figured I'd give it a try. I've always like caves anyways - I grew up in a rural area that had two local caves that did tours and stuff, so we went there a lot for summer camp and school field trips.

It was okay. The science was quite interesting and bit scary when you thought about it, especially seeing what's going on in Uganda right now. But the "supernatural" element and the forced relationship between the protagonist and a major/minor character was too much for me. This is a story about a super virus that begins in Afghanistan and makes it way to the US through Army hospitals. Nothing can stop this deadly virus, except maybe a new anti-biotic but to create it they need "moon milk". This...more
I read The Deep Zone: A Novel by James Tabor via EarlyBirdRead. It was a mystery read, so I didn't know anything about the novel or author until it showed up at my house. What a great surprise I got!
The Deep Zone is a thriller, but contains bits of romance and action/adventure. The plot is about a team of scientists that descend into a bottomless cave hoping to acquire the cure to a deadly disease that is rapidly killing people. Will they make it out alive and save the world?

The Deep Zone will be a great read for thriller fans.
At a small army outpost hospital in war-torn Afghanistan the appearance of a drug-resistant, bacterial infection marks what could be the start of a pandemic. Highly contagious, deadly and with no current effective treatment, the race is on to find a cure. The best possibility seems to be an "extremophile" (organisms that survive only under extremely hostile conditions) found only in a supercave in southe...more

If you are an adventurer in life or just an armchair adventurer, this is going to be a novel you just can't put down. The only problem I had with this book was that there was just a touch too much technical data for me, otherwise this was almost as good asFrozen Solid: A Novel, "Frozen Solid" has a little more finesse than "The Deep Zone" did. Anyone who has an interest in caving is going to LOVE this novel since most of it takes place in a 'super cave'.

This is a thriller and a very good one. The best I have read in over a year. I read this 400 page book in 2 days. I read myself to sleep almost every night. That didn't work here. I struggled to stay AWAKE so I could keep up with the story.

Excited to start another first reads giveaway. Love the feel of a new book and wondering if e- reader users can get the same little thrill from downloading something as I get from holding a book in my hands...the pages are bright white and the type is crisp. When I found out I was getting the ARC, I went back to the description and thought to myself that it sounded more like the type I might enjoy listening to in the car - kind of light, not requiring a ton of attention. I was pleasantly surpris...more
A typical thriller with a medical theme. It seems a bicteria is affecting soldiers in Afghanastan. There is only one potential antidote the result of research done by a woman who is no longer employed by the government. Her research showed that a substance dubbed moonmilk found in a South American cave could be the answer, but the supply that she had was used up. Thus an expedition is planned to return to this cave... Though it seems to require a great deal of willing suspension of disbelief, th...more
This is a thriller with everything. A drug resistant flesh-eating virus is sweeping through the military and threatens to spread throughout the country and the world. Halley Leland a beautiful and capable scientist finds herself with an expedition into the world's deepest cave to retrieve a rare organism from which to make an antibiotic to end the epidemic.
Though much of the story seems beyond credibility, at the end the author substantiates the existence of many of its elements. Suddenly it all...more

I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads. I am really glad that I did. I throughly enjoyed reading and learning about caves and what people have to be able to do in order to dive in these deep caves.
Dr. Hallie Leland is a very likeable character. She is introduced to us by taking a customer out for a dive. The man almost dies from panic of seeing dead bodies. We learn that Dr. Leland has been let go from BARDA, part of the CDC that does advanced research for diseases that a...more

Hard to believe that this thriller is a first effort. I really enjoyed it, but not so much the short story--with same main character--which is included. I am not fond of short stories, to begin with, and this seemed too much like the book--character gets repeatedly bashed but not quite killed, etc. The main setting is a fantastic and enormous cave in Mexico where the four team members go to collect a substance which can be made into drugs against a horrible pathogen. THere is even some romance w...more
Enjoyed this medical thriller for the most part. After an outbreak of a deadly, antibiotic-resistant infectious disease amongst soldiers in the Middle East, a team of scientists/explorers embarks for a super cave to retrieve "moonmilk" which is thought to be able to combat the disease.

Very fast paced book! The characters are all very well defined and believable! The storyline was superb! It's about a young female scientist who left her employment for the federal gov't in disgrace.. while she was in the midst of a great discovery making a new antibiotic. She goes to work as a diver guide.. when a new pandemic is released amongst soldiers. The gov't desperately needs her back to help finish the work that she had originally started year's prior.

Considering that I had read so many positive reviews of The Deep Zone, I was surprised at how terrible I thought it was. It was incredibly predictable and there were a number of characters introduced that blended together into stereotypical blobs The writing was also immature and a number of cliches appeared in each paragraph. "She was so beautiful, he couldn't look at her long--like staring into the sun." Bleh. The disease aspect was interesting, but this book is not for someone who is used to...more
SPOILERS!! I'm not sure if it was me not paying attention, or if the audio book was abridged (it said unabridged), but I missed when the first cave death happened. I also felt like the transitions were very rough and not very well laid out. Finally a very poor ending not a lot of thought put into how to make the moon milk work. Very predictable that Hallie's body helped cure, I saw that coming when the scene described her cutting herself, etc. There were some exciting scenes in the book and the...more
