What if your god was not a he or a she . . . but somewhere in between? And what if it was forbidden to worship that god, but you felt compelled to do so because you thought you had more in common with the god than anyone else you knew? Such is Nan Kuwo's dilemma. She gave up everything for her god--now would she survive that worship?

This highly original story explores concepts of gender with compassion and imagination. Main character Nan Kuwo's world, dreamlike and yet drawn with powerful sensory images, comes alive for the reader, who will be absorbed in both the dangers and the possibilities Nan faces pursuing a quest for self-knowledge.
