Aaarghe, yes, this book is useful. Yes, it's easy to use, well written, informative and clear. The maps and illustrations, the sectioning, yes, yes, it's all great.
But the book's smugness with its insider status is endlessly annoying. And the attitude of priveledge and entitlement drives me nuts. I DESERVE to go tramping across "No Trespassing" signs! I'm a tourist! I've got more money than these ignorant locals. And besides, they're not taking advantage of all this great stuff! It should be mi

I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who is planning to travel to Kauai. After reading it I felt well-informed and confident in my itinerary choices.

However, as the book recommends, you really should buy the app version of this book. I first bought the ebook version and after reading it decided that the map features of the app would be worth the additional purchase. I was really surprised that the app contains all of the same information but in a much more user-friendly format - espe

There's no denying that this book is popular, but it just didn't work for me. I found that many of the recommendations ('gems') were overblown, like this tunnel hike that wasn't even the best hike in the area. I also found that the book focused too much on tours, like helicopters and sailboats, and other things that cost $$$. The author's restaurant recommendations weren't always trustworthy either, in my opinion, as he slammed a couple places we thought were pretty good.

Most of all, the Ultimat

The best guidebook we found for Kauai (ditto for Maui and Maui Revealed: The Ultimate Guidebook) The author lives on Kauai so brings a nice local perspective, includes some great tips, is super comprehensive, and brings some down-to-earth touches and humor to his suggestions and reviews. Highly recommended to anyone wishing to go a little beyond the typical tourist sites (and make the best of the not-to-miss ones everyone will be doing).

If you haven't been to Kauai, you need to buy this book and go. If you have been to Kauai and did not have this book, you need to buy it and go again.

If you're headed to Kauai, this is probably the only book you'll need to help guide your tourism. Great coverage of the island, it's history and customs, and things to do during your visit. Several excellent maps are included, as well as some illustrative photos. I really appreciate that it's a fully independently written guidebook, and it shows in the honesty of their reviews.

Why only four stars then? My own opinion of places didn't always line up with theirs, and many of the reviews were opini

As much as I love the revealed books I did not like this one as much. Maybe it is owed to Kauai's abundant beaches but I never really felt I knew where as what as much as the 3 other Revealed books. I bought the book used and installed the app as a companion which is a great way to go about it. It was cumbersome to flip back and forth between the activities and the beaches section to try to marry the two up. On the other islands where there are not nearly so many beaches this wasn't a problem.

Hands down, by far, this is the best guide book I've read yet. It's oddly up to date, and they constantly update with new versions with updated information. The information is actually true. I would absolutely buy/trust any guidebook by this author.

Great guide book - straight up and honest. Very detailed too, written by people that live there. Definitely the best guide book I've had in awhile. (I hear the rest of the 'Revealed' books for the other islands are just as good).

I read this cover to cover and now feel well equipped to fully enjoy my vacation. There are short and sweet bits of history and vocabulary, and a full description of all major beaches and hikes. The restaurant section felt a bit messy. Loved how they separated hikes from adventures, drawing the line so it's easier to know what to expect. I have a taste of my likely reception as a visitor, and am now aware of the land rights issues that might be encountered. The tone of the guide was light and fu ...more

This book is clearly geared towards tourists who rely on guidebooks to tell them what to do on their vacation in order to get the most bang for their buck. It certainly beats the other guidebooks of the area, like Lonely Planet or Fodor's, as THE ULTIMATE KAUAI GUIDEBOOK does provide a comprehensive and rather honest list of activities, beaches, hotels, tour companies, and restaurants. What sets THE ULTIMATE KAUAI GUIDEBOOK a step above those guidebooks is that its website, http://www.hawaiireve ...more

Not of the same caliber as the Maui book. For starters, there's a lot of missing restaurants. Where we go on Maui almost everything is reviewed but we found many restaurants on the east side of Kauai that just aren't in the book and some of them are quite good.

And then there's the review of Scotty's. Scotty's is a bbq place partially owned by the author (something, to his credit, he is very transparent about). At the (supposed) continued prodding of many of the readers, they rated the place with

This is one of the best travel guide books I've ever read. It's organized really well, includes great information on Kauai's beaches and trails, and tells you how to find some lesser known spots around the island. One local admonished us for using it, telling us that "this book has killed a lot of people, so we boycott it." We thanked her for telling us, but I thought it was a ridiculous warning. Doughty may map out some hard-to-reach and sometimes dangerous spots, but he always points out the d ...more

Once again, Andrew Doughty has written a humorous, comprehensive, and highly informative guide for another Hawaiian Island. I picked up Maui Revealed before my first-ever trip to Hawaii on a whim, and I'm so glad I did. Once my Fiance and I decided we would be celebrating our Honeymoon on Kauai, I bought Andy's guidebook for that island as well, because Maui Revealed served me very well on my first trip. I hope to add all of his Hawaiian guidebooks to my book collection as I visit each island on ...more

This is a really good travel guide. The reviews seem honest and in-depth. I like that they have a lot of detail about hiking trails and activities. They also have an app for your phone that has gps coordinates for everything... including where you are on hiking trails. I can't give a full review until after I've been there, though, so perhaps more info to come.

I was very disappointed with this guide. I loved the Maui book but the Kauai guide is not reliable. I lost all respect in the guide when I went to the authors restaurant Scotty's BBQ. They gave themselves and Ono allegedly after readers wrote them inquiring why the restaurant did not have an Ono. The restaurant was terrible and after speaking with other travelers they agree with my opinion. I have noticed they omitted lots of good restaurants from the book. I know it is nearly impossible to incl ...more

A practical and plain spoken travel guide. Recommended, after Twain's Letters from Hawaii and Michener's tome, to anyone headed to Kauai for the first time. The iPhone app of the same name is also extremely useful and slick, to boot.

I feel this is the best guidebook for Kauai available. I bought this book a few weeks before my vacation to the Garden Island and it was indispensable. Get the latest edition and it will make your trip that much better.

Loved this guidebook but it undersells the level of difficulty of the hikes. We ended up losing the trail in waimea, and walking over a 10 inch wide trial with 500+ feet drop offs on either side. Yikes.

Loved this book in 2009 and loved it again this year. They directed us in 2009 to some amazing, less travelled spots which were breathtaking. Can't wait to see the new locations this year!

We just returned from two wonderful weeks in Hawaii and much of the credit for making this the best family vacation we have ever had is due to two books, The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook and Maui Revealed-The Ultimate Guidebook, both by Andrew Doughty. We read these books prior to our trip and then carried them with us. They were immensely valuable for directing us toward and away from activities, places, restaurants, beaches and more. Every choice we made was perfect for us, and based on the summar ...more

I bought the 7th Edition one day into our Kauai vacation and it never left my side the rest of our 8 day stay (which at first got on my new hubby's nerves, but later in the week he was often asking me, "What does the book say about this...?"). The maps, reviews, and detailed descriptions of trails/trailheads and hidden gems were fantastic. The legends and history of the island and its natives were also interesting and informative, and I appreciated the author's humor throughout. His admiration a ...more

This is a wonderful guide book to the island of Kauai. The authors are residents and give the straight scoop on all aspect of the island: lodging, restaurants, adventures, beaches, shopping, etc. The narratives are full of snarky humor and you can tell it's been updated recently. Though we only stayed on Kauai for a few days and stuck to the South and West sides of the island this time, the book was a veritable treasure trove of common sense, little known hideaways, and recommendations for any l ...more

Fairly well done, and unique, for a guidebook. Apparently the author lives on the island of Kauai so gives what he considers a lot of "inside information" including his own personal reviews of restaurants, locations, hotels, and attractions. I found some of his blurbs quite humorous, and many of the historical details were interesting. His maps were easy to read and follow and included easily identifiable landmarks. It was a tad bit 'snarky' at times though, almost too "in the know". But it was ...more

This is by far the best guidebook to Kauai. We've been to the island a dozen times and the book is our bible. We've used several different editions over the years and made use of their website, too. The book is written in a breezy, friendly style by real people...you feel like you're reading a lengthy letter from trusted friends rather than a dry reference book by bored travel writers. Their opinions are candid and fair -- and their information is current. I also strongly recommend the Oahu edit ...more

LOVED IT!!! My husband and I camped in Kauai for two weeks and very much enjoyed this guide book. It is the best I've ever used.
We hiked a ton, visited beautiful waterfalls, saw amazing views, and snorkeled with sea turtles, went to a great luau, had great Hawaiian Ice and saw a beached sea lion all because of this book. When we were in Kauai, we were talking about places we had been using the guide book and locals would say, "Where is that?"
Fabulous! The food recommendations were right-on as w
