I’ve been wearing my war hat this week. Or should that be war helmet? Anyway, I have been reading Breaking an Empire by James Tallett. Like Bloodaxe and Tarranau, also by James, Empire is set in the fictional fantasy world of The Four Part Land.
Breaking an Empire may be a work of fiction but it reads a bit like a war memoir, although in the third person perspective.
The book follows Rhyfelwyr and his merry band of soldiers as they are sent off to declare war on Niam Liad because of a rebellion....more

While this story is a prequel to Tarranau, it leaves you on the edge of your seat as you get caught up in the lives of a group of friends as they march out within the Glanhaol Fflamboethi in hopes of eradicating their enemy, the Niam Liad. An enemy that is quite ruthless and considers itself to be a step ahead of Bhreac Veryan's army.

Breaking An Empire is a fast paced, action packed adventure that had me caught from the start. Laced with humor, Tallett does a great job with allowing the characters to spring from the page and shine through the brutality of war. I was completely fascinated by the strategic element of the story and immersed in the battle scenes.
The action played out like a movie in my mind and I felt myself connected to these characters and worried for their welfare. I hope there is a continuation or a prequel...more

Breaking an Empire, the prequal to Tallett's debut novel, Tarranau, may be a novella, but don't let its size fool you. A page-turner that will grip you from beginning to end, it tells a story of friendship, of hope, determination, grief and deceit.
The battle sequences are so vivid and stunningly executed, you'll find your heart thumping as you fight alongside the soldiers.

3-1/2 stars, rounded up.
A kind of "war is Hell/Pyrrhic victory" story, centering around a group of five soldiers, four veterans and one new recruit. They're off to reconquer a far-flung province that has declared independence.
The strong part of this story is the characters. They're not your average grunts, although they're not superhuman either. Some of them grow and develop as the campaign marches on. I ended up caring about them in the end, and that's what's really important.
