Just when everything is going completely wrong, something finally goes right. Lyss is given the chance to start over when she is offered a live-in position at an historic inn. The i...more

Wow…I’m not even sure where to start. I’ve followed this author’s short stories weekly on her blog, and ever since I read the first one, I’ve been captivated by her writing. Her flow is wonderful, and her style amazing. I’ve been slowly counting the weeks until her release of this book, and I was thrilled to pick it up. I finally sat down to read it, and when I got through the first few pages today, I didn’t stop until I was done. This story sucked me in and I finished it in one sitting.

Lyss Brewer starts off the new year a mess – no job, no boyfriend, no place to live, no money and of all places in a motel room.
However her luck quickly changes when she’s offered a job at a local inn, not to mention it’s a live in position which solves all manner of the aforementioned problems for Lyss. She makes friends fast with most of the staff, they soon become like a family to her and finally everything is going right again.

I absolutely loved this book! The character of Lyss was fun, snarky, with a bit of deep-set angst. She found she has a gift of seeing, which makes her think she is crazy. I liked the relationships she had with the people at the inn. They were all unique characters that Lyss grew to love like family. I do wish there was a little more of Gloria because she seemed so eccentric, but the reason for her absence is understood and explained.

This is one of those books where I'm not quite sure how I feel about it. The writing was clean and engaging but I never really felt the type of connection to the characters that I was expecting to feel. And just when things look like they're moving in a direction I can get behind, something BIG happened that threw me, as a reader, into a tailspin. Since I try to keep my reviews spoiler free, I'm not going to go into the big happening except to say that it caught me off guard and left me flounder...more

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book but I had a feeling I'd be quite entertained. As someone who follows Sarah on Twitter, her witty tweets set my expectations high and I have to say, this book didn't disappoint. I wasn't expecting a paranormal but I caught on by chapter 4 that something wasn't right about the girl talking to Lyss. I was expecting some kind of romance and the book toys around with romance but veers away often to dive into the suspense of serial killers, mysteries and gho...more

“You got up off the bathroom floor. That’s a start. Now, just stay off the floor. After all—aside from winning the lottery—all any of us can ever really hope for is more days spent standing tall than spent in pieces on the floor.”
