I really enjoyed this new episode in the adventures of Malcolm/Charles and Suzanne/Melanie Rannoch/Frazer. This one is set in Brussels and its environs just before, during and just after the Battle of Waterloo. There is a murder to solve, espionage to contend with, personal relationship complications to resolve, and THE BATTLE. Grant performs a masterful balancing act of presenting scenes from different characters' perspectives on...more

So second book could have been the difficult one, number one sets the tone introduces the characters and lets you discover the time/place/feeling. What can number two bring to the feast? A whole lot of intrigue, scandal, death and more shocking plot-turners if this book is anything to go by!
I even had to put he book down is confusion at one point, but don't worry, this only lasted for about 5 mins until I had to find out what happened next. I love how complex the characters are, how just because...more

As I write this review, I find myself thinking of an occasion when I sold both Vienna Waltz and Imperial Scandal to a customer. This in itself isn't a new occurence, but I described her books in a new way. I found myself calling them "like Elizabeth George, but historical".
I think Elizabeth George was on my mind because of what I'm sure has become a running joke on this blog. I love Tracy's books, but I don't think the covers are the most effective they could be. It's not that the covers look b...more

I liked parts of it, but found it overall jumbled and too many characters and funny little twists. I didn't seem to have much sympathy for Suzanne and Malcolm this time, as they seemed to be just a means of forwarding the plot rather than compelling characters in their own right. Drat. And I was sooooo looking forward to this. Of course I will read the next one, but with maybe a bit of a shrug instead with relish. Mainly I was liking Cordelia the best. Se seemed to have the most personality. Thi...more
Malcolm and Suzanne Rannoch investigate a mysterious death in the days leading up to Waterloo. Fast-paced and exciting; in the last chapters of the book, the author definitely brought the battle, with all its conflict and confusion, to hectic life. The heightened emotion as Suzanne discovers where her true loyalties lay - with her husband - made this among Grant's best.
Loved this mystery set against Brussels & Waterloo. Great history lesson, well plotted story that kept me guessing till the end - like an Agatha Christy, but with better characters & setting. Such interesting characters, with a twisting plot, secrets revealed, surprises, & more! I really enjoy this author and had ordered all her other books now.
I really enjoyed this sequel to The Vienna Waltz although I had the same problem with this one that I did with the last. I kept getting confused with who was who and some of the back stories but I didn't let it distract me from the overall story.
