I am glad i read this book by Lauren Tarshis. This is the second book in the 'I Survived' series. Chet Roscow moves in with his uncle during the summer so he does not have to move all of the time with his parents. Chet finds out from the news that multiple shark attacks have happened in bodies of water near where he lives. After his friends pull a prank on him while swimming one day, he decides to get back at them and pull a better prank. He pretends that he got attacked by a shark and his frien...more

the wonderful ceridwen sent me this book, because she totally gets my love of sharks, and the people they eat along the way.
don't worry, sharks don't eat people much. we are the circus peanuts of the animal kingdom, and only crazy sharks want to eat us.
but this is great - a kid's book about the shark attacks of 1916; the one jaws was based on.and it is a real-and-true story about how when there is a shark that is going on an all-you-can-eat buffet rampage, you are not even safe in a cr...more

Lauren Tarshisin "I Survived Shark Attacks 1916" (Scholastic, 2010) tuo nimensä puolesta mieleen Valittujen Palojen dramaattisen selviytymisartikkelin, mutta kyseessä on kuitenkin lapsille suunnatun I Survived... -kirjasarjan toinen osa. Sarjan muut osat käsittelevät amerikkalaisia koskettaneita traagisia tapahtumia eli hurrikaani Katharinea, Pearl Harborin pommitusta ja Titanicin uppoamista, ja tosielämään pohjautuvasta tarinasta on tässäkin kyse.

If one of your friends came up to you and told you there was a man-eating shark in Lake Michigan, right off the shore of Highland Park, you'd probably laugh at them. That's what happened when Chet, a ten year old boy living in New Jersey in 1916, sees a shark fin in the river near his house. But no one believes him. A few days later, Chet hears about a shark attacking a person just up the coast - but his friends don't believe that either - there's no way a shark would ev...more

<3 this book! Ok, so the story line may not be my fav. About a kid who couldn't ever find friends. But I do <3 sharks, I <3 shark stories, and I <3 this book! This is probably my favorite "I Survived" book by Lauren Tarshis. I will be reading "I Survived The Attack on September 11th, 2001" next. Which should be one of my other favorite "I Survived" books. Not scary book for me. But I'm a teen. Older than what this book age group is. Which is probably 9,10, & 11. But the incessant...more

“I Survived the Shark Attacks of 1916” by Lauren Tarshis tells of shark attacks that occurred in 1916 at a time when people didn’t believe sharks even would attack people. The main character in the story is Chet. Chet is a young boy who lives in Elm Hills, New Jersey with his uncle Jerry at his diner. Working at the diner, Chet’s three friends come in and they come with a newspaper stating that a shark attacked a swimmer of a beach in New Jersey. Chet and his friend can’t believe it but and Capt...more

This book was surprisingly amazing. It is about a boy who thinks that a shark is in the water and his friends don't believe him. They don't believe him because they pulled a prank on him that there was a shark in the water. The boy wanted to get them back; he made a lake monster, and his friends thought someone had been killed. It made his friends really scared. Then his friends were in the water and the boy was screaming "get out of the water!" because there really...more

My students are going to love this one. I think this will be a great hi-lo title, and I have some specific readers in mind for the Fall! This is a brief fiction account of a boy that witnesses and survives a shark attack in a river in New Jersey. I think my students will love this even more when they get to the end and get to read that this really happened! I also like the inclusion of facts about shark attacks at the end of the book. My boy readers in particular will really love that. I also re...more
My 3rd grader loves this series.
I love that they are introducing him to the fact that history can be exciting, interesting, and involved regular people (not just dead old rich white men, which was how I was taught history in elementary school--it is getting better :) ).
For this book, Tarshis took the New Jersey shark attacks of 1916, and fashioned a story based on the boy who survived the attack (name changed, his personal story is entirely fictional). A section in the back gives an explanation...more

Hi, this book is a great book so far. It is about a boy in a lake and he is swimming with his friends and sees a shark fin. He thought he was imagining things, so he kept on swimming, then he hears screaming and looks over at his friends and he thought they were being attacked. He freaks out and runs out of the water to go get help. Then his friends came up, and it turns out that they were playing a joke on him. They went to go and try to find him, but when they found him he was freaking out bec...more

I read this book to fourth graders as a read aloud and they could not get enough of it. A historical story that retells the shark attacks in 1916 on the east coast. The back of the book also has some interesting facts about sharks.
The story is about a boy named Chet who is staying with his Uncle who runs a cafe. Chet works in the cafe and is invited to go swimming with a group of boys. Pranks are done by Chet and the group of boys so when Chet declares that he was attackd by a shark, no one bel...more

"I survived the Shark Attacks of 1916" is about a boy named Chet. He doesn’t really fit in with anyone around him until a couple boys ask him to go swimming in the creek. Chet decides to play a prank on them and pretends there is a monster in the creek. One day Chet sees a real monster, a shark, but his friends don’t believe him. Chet ends up getting his calf muscle bitten trying to save his friend. I like how this book relates back to the actual facts about the shark attacks of 1916. I would re...more

I received a set of "I Survived..." books. I am reading them before setting them out for the students.
While I have heard of the other disasters in the set (Katrina, Pearl Harbor, etc.), this was one disaster I has never heard of. The author used information from the shark attacks of 1916 to bring to life the events. I especially like the list of facts she provides. I hope stories like this would make students want to conduct further research.

I thought this book was a short, but a good. It was about a boy named Chet who hears about a shark killing on the east coast which is very rare. I can't really tell you any more because that would be like telling you the hole story. I say this because it's a quick read. The author could have stretched this book on longer, but I still think He/She did a good job in writing it. The quality of writing was okay. The suspense/action in this book was good to. I recommend this book because its a good r...more
I let my 9-year old son rate this book and he definetly gives it a five star. We read it together for his book report and it's now one of his favorite books :) He's always been interested in anything sea life.
We thought it was cool how there were facts about shark attacks at the end. Also a website to learn more about sharks, shark attacks and other interesting sea life facts.

Another action-packed installment in this series of adventure stories based on true events. Back matter includes an author's note and facts about shark attacks.

Chet moves in with his uncle. He makes some friends. They go to a creek and his friends play a prank on him. Chet gets them back by making them think he is a swamp monster. They think that he took it too far and befriend him.
I thought that this book was okay. It wasn't the best, it was just okay. I could feel Chet's feelings when they played the prank on him. I would try to get them back too.

This book would be a good book to read for fourth graders and fifth graders. I think this is a good book of historical fiction because it includes a lot of facts. It talks about sharks, the accidents that happen, injuries and more. I think this book could teach students about the dangers of sharks and what they could learn from reading this book. How to avoid the situations and how bad the injuries are. I liked this book and would give it to fourth and fifth graders to read.
I did not finish the book, but I've read it about six times. So the book is about a kid named Chet and he just moved to New Jersey. He likes it there because he has a good reputation and is making friends. Now he is hearing these stories about sharks killing people. At first, he thinks that it is all abunch of stupid stories. Then when he went to go swim in the lake where the stories are taking place, he gets an unexpected visit!... Dun Dun Dun mystery to you guys until you read the book!
Between 3 and 4 stars. It was a little too short, but kids will probably like that. It's about shark attacks, probably nothing more needs to be said for it's kid-appeal. However, the author does base it on historical events and gives really interesting probably little known info about the time period: that people in 1916 thought sharks were tame and wouldn't attack humans. This could be a book considered "sneaky" in the way it teaches kids while also entertaining them.

This book is a fictionalized account of actual events. It is a great boy/guy read because of the topic. It has pretty good appeal because of the topic. Sharks, boys, true story - all a good combo. The reading level is great for late 2nd through early 4th grade readers. A great adult book companion is Mike Capuzzo's Close to shore : a true story of terror in an age of innocence
I think this is the best book yet I could not imagine being attacked by a shark in a river acording to the book it says he was attacked by it in a river it also says maybe the shark is from the ocean because the river water is atcully from the ocean so they were saying it swam from the ocean to the river so that is how he got attacked.
Very good book for kids. As an adult it was quick reading. I was surprised to find out it was true, though dramatized. It was very informative with a little bit of why you don't "cry wolf" thrown in. The author did a good job of bringing the characters to life and making the main character sympathetic.
My ten-year-old liked this enough to beg me to read it, too.
