Washington, D.C. … capital of an empire. Powerful. Exhilarating. Corrupt. And in the shadows … vampires far older than the nation itself.

A power unto himself, Duncan has served at Raphael’s side for a hundred and fifty years. But long laid plans have finally borne fruit, and the time has come for Duncan to leave Raphael and tackle the greatest challenge of his life. He wil...more

Fantastic! I really enjoyed seeing a multi-faceted side to Duncan. His power, personality, and his life story. Absolutely loved it!

5 Huge Stars. Excellent!!! Start to finish…it was perfect, just like Duncan!! *swoon* This series is still going strong and this book might be the best one yet. Duncan has found the ideal match in the snarky, determined Emma. She has so many Cyn traits, but she’s still her own person, tough, yet mischievous. I enjoyed the playful banter between Duncan and Emma. He really lets his guard down with her, and his desire for Emma is undeniable. He’s so passionate and possessive…WOW, just WOW!! I knew...more

I'm mildly disappointed by this book but I think that has largely to do with the fact that Duncan has been a favorite of mine forever and so this book was hyped to the nth in my head.

Duncan was his usually sexy, charming self but I thought that Emma was only so-so. She wasn't nearly as engaging as Cyn and I found her to be a bit TSTL. I almost put the book down when I read that she has "violet eyes" (<--- never again do I want to read that!) but I'm glad I continued. Though I didn...more

I was SO sure I would never be able to love this book as much as I did the ones about Raphael and Cyn... Well I'm glad to say I was wrong. If I didn't like it a bit more I liked it just as much, probably because I've been waiting for Duncan's book since I begun reading the series. Duncan was a character that completely captivated me. You just can easily see the leader in him on the first books, it's impossible not to notice how he will be discovering and making a path of his own very soon. And h...more

Hm...I think I'm too bored to write a full review so I'll try to be fast.

My Duncan...

I decided Duncan is a younger Brad Pitt, and then I found a picture of Brad Pitt from Troy because let's admit it, he was at his hottest moments in this movie! (Not to mention that he wasn't the only drool worthy male character in the film.)

Meh...Got off track. So, Duncan was, as always, delicious. In this book we see him without the shadow of Raphael's awesomeness over him and boy does he shine. Although I usua...more

Duncan, the one I have been waiting for since his entrance as Raphael’s protector. His quiet constancy and absolute strength throughout the Vampires in America series has only whetted my appetite for this Vampire. Ms. Reynolds has delivered a triumph with DUNCAN .

As with her other novels, Ms. Reynolds uses flashback and we are graced with not only the beginning of an eternal friendship, but that of Duncan’s loss and rebirth. However, this novel is not as g...more

She shoots, She Scores!!! Another fantastic read in the Vampire's in America Series. I bought this book on my Kindle and settled in for the night with Duncan. I did not put it down until I was finished. ( I was a wee bit tired the next day but, it was so worth it) I was suprised at the twists and turns in this book, I actually thought I had it all figured out and then WHAM! I was so wrong.

The leading lady is Emma and she is desperately looking for her missing friend, what she didn't plan on find...more

Duncan is such a great character. I had felt attached to him after reading Raphael's books, and even during Sophia's, when he just seemed like such a rock solid guy. Yet he was always in the background, upstanding citizen of Raphael city that he was. Now he gets the focus, and I'm so glad that he did!
I love the way that Emma thinks of him when they first meet:

"Duncan laughed softly, his warm brown eyes dancing. He sure didn't look like a vampire. Miguel she could buy. He'd growled for...more

As Duncan is cleaning up a mess left by the previous vampire lord in Washington D.C., a woman walks in to the embassy to ask where her best friend is. The last time Emma has seen her was when she was headed to a party with vampires. Because of the things Duncan finds out about the previous lord, he agrees easily to help Emma.

Later while investigating all of the prior lord's properties, the vampires find a dead body buried in the backyard... Things start moving quickly from there...

I know I keep...more

Excellent rebound from the prior novel

I just recently posted about how I've noticed my hometown, Washington, D.C., becoming a more prevalent setting for urban fantasy novels, and this book further supports that!

A change for Duncan was far from a surprise. Serving Raphael for nearly two centuries, he was more than ready to become a Vampire Lord and manage his own territory. With Raphael and Cyn's blessing, he's sent from the west coast to the east coast on a mission to overtake the current Lord...more

Duncan has been my favorite vamp since I first read Raphael. He is the most 'human' vamp because of his gift of empathy. In this novel we find that Raphael has encouraged Duncan to take over the D.C territory and oust Victor the current and evil Lord. This book takes us through that take over and into the darkside of politicians and the victimization of young women. Emma's roommate Lacey was killed during one of Lord Victor's "parties" and she wants revenge. Duncan meets Emma and boom we have ch...more

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Michelle L. Olson:

O.K, I've lusted after Raphael, I've swooned hard over Raj, and now I'm even more hopelessly in love with Duncan. :)

I simply do not know how D.B does it, but the books of this series just get better and better!

As a fan of the series, you can't help but fall in love with Duncan in earlier books with him as a supporting character. He was much too charismatic to stay that way though, so him getting his own book was simply a work in...more

Duncan takes over another lord's territory and discovers all the despicable things that vampire lord had done. Combine a very sick vampire lord with powerful and rich politicians and you'll get the picture.

I loved Duncan when he was Raphael's right hand. The problem in this book is that he is way too powerful for the things he is facing here. He is too powerful for anything the author throws at him. He is still great, but when he beats everything and everyone with almost a flick of his finger...more

Don't let the covers fool you, this is definitely a series to read. Suspense, murder, power, and passion. Duncan has been Raphael's lieutenant for more than 100 years. But now its his turn to take over a territory, one that badly needs to be cleaned up. Emma just wants to find her friend, even though it may not be the ending she is hoping for. Emma is a strong willed character much like Cynthia. And next to Raphael and Cynthia, Duncan and Emma are my next favorite couple. I really didn't want th...more

Like most people, I have been waiting to read Duncan since we first met in Raphael's book. Even then Duncan grabbed your attention as the strong, silent, sexy type.

I loved this book as I am guessing you already know. When Duncan left Raphael's territory, my heart went with him as he was going alone. But not for long as Duncan also inspired love and devotion from his fellow vampires and soon he became the one all were protecting.

I loved his HEA as well. She was perfect for him. Together they made...more

I have enjoyed this series of books but only when there is more of Raphael and Cynthia in them. Okay, I am spoiled when it comes to good vampire characters and Raphael is one of those. Duncan, on his own, was like losing a friend now that he has moved on to become a Lord of his own territory. I wasn't drawn into the love interest aspect of this book but still enjoyed Duncan's ability to smooth talk his way around the situation. Now that he has moved on, it will be interesting to see where this s...more

Duncan. Oh Duncan. I have been looking forward to his story, it was always going to be good, he is just delicious.

The story was fantastic, as usual with this series it is much darker than the usual paranormal romance and this one is no different, some really nasty things happening to women on account of the previous Lord of DC. One of these women's disappearance brings Emma into Duncan's (the new Lord) domain. He vows to help find Emma's best friend and for all intents and purposes her sister....more

Fan favorite, Duncan looks great striking his best alpha male pose. Duncan relinquishes his role as Raphael's right hand to become a territory lord in his own right by defeating Victor, the corrupt vampire lord of the Washington, DC area. While cleaning house (both literally and figuratively), Duncan is approached by the delectable Emma Duquet who is looking for her missing roommate. Duncan, intrigued by both Emma and her allegation that Victor is responsible for her missing roo...more

"I'm not a man at all, Emma. And while some may consider me bad, I'm very good at what I do."

Seriously. Hands down, my favorite so far. I love it when a series seems to get better as it progresses instead of burning out. Duncan doesn't miss a beat. It picks up right where Sophia left off. Once again, in the interest of being fair to D.B. Reynolds, I feel that it is necessary to disclose that I am not a fan of paranormal romance, so please keep that in mind when reading this review.

Duncan, Raphael's longtime second in command is finally ready to become a master vampire. Though he will always see Raphael as his sire, it's time for him to have a territory of his own. With that in mind Duncan travels to Washington with a few people loyal to Raphael and is met by some of his own child...more

Was anxiously looking forward to Duncan’s tale and I did like it. DBR always delivers an excellent story - A definite 4 star. However, I was a bit disappointed. While I absolutely love Duncan, I couldn’t warm up to Emma as much as I wanted. Just didn’t seem like the build up to their ultimate relationship was as good as Raphael/Cyn’s. Just seemed to me to be all business, then it wasn’t. I missed that steamy smoldering build up in-between. Have to say the sex scenes though were plentiful and smo...more

Vampires in America is a fabulous series, it truly is. This time it's the delicious, delightful, delectable, Duncan's (alliterations abound) turn.

Duncan has been an interesting character since book 1 (Raphael). A book was a while coming for him, but it was worth the wait. Duncan was made by his Sire, Raphael, whilst dying during the Civil War (maybe I'm wrong but the date seems wrong - 1836?). He has been with Raphael for approximately 150 years, and a more loyal Lieutenant you won't find. He ha...more

The tragic thing about this wonderful series is that the atrocious covers are killing it. How many of you will look at this book and no matter how much I'll plead with you to try the series you'll not touch it with a ten foot pole?

Yeah, that's what I thought.

You know I rarely read paranormal romance, but this is creme de la creme of it. There is no woe is me and she is my mate and let's be Neanderthal. Instead there are clever, cunning and strong men and women caught in a power play akin t...more

I loved this book. D.B. Reynolds certainly knows how to spin a very good tale.

Duncan Milford, Raphael's trusted second has taken the Washington DC Territory from Victor, a corrupt vampire lord. The story begins with a high action vampire-to-vampire duel for supremacy and, of course, Duncan won. As he is straightening up the after battle carnage, a lovely human, Emma Duquet who came to the "vampire embassy", seeking help in locating her friend Lacey.

The story picked up from there. It wasn't a fa...more

Duncan gets his HEA this time around.
What a great story, Duncan has to be the favorite surely?
He's the one Vamp who is the most human, not only in character, but looks as well. When Emma first meets him
she doesn't realize straight away that he is Vampire, but that never affects the attraction she feels for him.

Our couple face a lot together on their journey to find who killed Emma's best friend Lacey, but eventually they
uncover the villain, and boy, I was NOT expecting that!

Lacey's death is...more

This was my favorite VIA books in the series so far! The relationship between Duncan and Emma was wonderful. It was a pleasure to have no conflict about how they felt about one another. They both seem to embrace the fact that they desired each other and then eventually fell in love with one another. Most romance books have the couple fighting their feelings and taking awhile to come to terms with how they feel. I loved the humor as well. It was an awesome book!

Loved it!! The synopsis given is an accurate tease, so I'm not going to bother re-summarizing. I would prefer to have a little more action, like in Raphael's book, but this matches Duncan's down to earth personality. It has just the right about of action, romance, and mystery. Emma does have a stubborn streak, but knows her limits and knows when to give in. There were a few times in the book I was thinking "oh no...please don't follow the cliche!" but it turned out all right. I hate it...more

“She knew the minute HE arrived. Felt the warm blanket of comfort reach out to her frozen soul....He made his way down the isle and sat next to her...he didn't reach out, didn't touch her...a single tear slid out from her closed lids and she blindly reached for his hand. He took her hand in more, gathering her close, arms coming around her warm and strong as her head sank down unto his shoulder and the tears finally came soaking the lapel of his wool suit. He offered her a perfectly white handkerchief...she stared at it and wondered who carries that type of thing anymore? He looked back at her and explained, "I'm old fashioned.” 12 likes
