I want start off by saying Rukh is one hot, sexy guy! Who wouldn't love a Djinn that is an assassin and by his description he sounds like he looks like Jason Momoa (I swear in one scene the author's description of Rukh was exactly as how Jason appeared at the premiere of Conan). Ok I will stop drooling, but I have to say that the author did a great job with the characters who jumped off the pages with their passion.

I picked up this book after it was decided for a BOTM in my group. The feminine back is very sensual and draws the eye, so I think a good choice for a cover. the world building was great, new, fresh and easy to follow. The Djinn’s Dilemma was a fun and highly enjoyable read. The story is solid and sculpted to be a textbook classic ideal for the coming warm weather. The pace is fairly brisk, but there is ample time to fall in love with the characters. It’s not the very best novel I’ve read this year, but I would without hesitation read this again (okay, maybe a few times and I’m not going to count). I liked the hero and heroine as they are built realistically with flaws and all of the quirks of the average person. Sarah, also known as Jasmine, is a story hungry reporter for a newspaper in Austin. The hero is named Rukh and he is by trade an assassin. I liked his name, but I’m not a hundred percent certain if I mentally pronounced it correctly. I imagined it to be along the lines of rook (like a chess piece, but there is no telling).

The basics? Jasmine has been made a target for assassination because of a lead she’s pursuing and doesn’t realize it. Rukh is the one who has been hired to kill her, and he’s a genie to boot (Irish and Middle Eastern). But when he sees the person that she really is inside, loving, warm, yet strangely closed to him and his powers, he is captivated enough to spare her.

His fascination with her is the sole thing that saves her life on several instances as he intervenes on her behalf with her unaware for the most part. All Jasmine knows is that the handsome stranger is someone that she feels a bond with, but she is curious about who Rukh really is. Especially after she applies her journalistic skills to try and find out more about him and learns absolutely less than nothing. Well, unless you count the fact that the hero doesn’t have a Facebook page to obsessively update, or shoot out tweets as a hobby in his spare time.

The story is well-crafted and somewhat light in tenor, but with a delectable twist of intrigue and suspense. This read makes me wonder why I haven’t perused a Harlequin serial in the last ten years. This book is definitely not part of your grandmother’s aging but tidy collection of “well” hidden and beloved volumes stashed under the bed or inside of a closet. There is a thick smidgeon of smutty goodness (which I absolutely adore) so lovers of the erotic will get that oh-so necessary fix of naughtiness as an added bonus as well.

This story started out really strong for me. I am pretty sure it had a lot to do with the hero. Rukh is a sexy half-djinn assassin who ends up falling for his mark. Sarah is nothing like the scum he is usually hired to kill. She is a good person with a bright aura. And he realizes that he must figure out why she has been targeted if he going to be able to save her life.

Only it isn't entirely a secret, and unknown to her, someone who knows she's working on it has hired an assassin to stop her story via drastic means if needed. This is where Rukh, a djinn-human hybrid, comes in for he is the assassin that was hired to do the job. He begins questioning his assignment from the first time he sees Sarah, partly because he can see that her aura is pure and innocent of any kind of evil deed that might make someone want to kill her, and partly because he finds himself irresistibly attracted to her. The attraction proves to be mutual once he is obliged to reveal himself to Sarah, and thus begins a whirlwind tale of combustible chemistry, romance, intrigues, and trying to stop whoever it is that wants Sarah dead.

Sarah is a very independent woman with a gentle, giving heart, who is nevertheless a tenacious reporter who's not afraid to pursue a story that is likely to become the scandal of the year. She may not be aware that someone has hired an assassin to stop her, but she surely would have to know that she's swimming in dangerous waters and poking her nose into the business of some very important and influential people who could do her a great deal of harm in a great many ways physical and financial. And yet there often seems to be a certain sort of naivete about her that makes you wonder if she really does realize how potentially explosive the situation she is creating is, for she mostly just talks about it as though it were any other story she might write. She knows that the things she will be revealing will set off a scandal most likely, but she seems oblivious to the fact that doing so might place her in danger. Despite however rose colored her outlook on the world might be at times, she's no shrinking violet that will let a man walk all over her, nor does she seem to have any particular need of a man to make her life complete. She might be a bit bookish, and slightly oblivious to things at times, but there aren't any secret yearnings for a man to take her away from it all, or any latent submissive tendencies that make her secretly want to be overpowered or anything. Just a healthy young woman with a fairly healthy attitude toward relationships. Quite refreshing really.

Rukh fits the usual specs for a paranormal hero: large bodied, muscular, sinfully handsome, a take-charge attitude, and a desire to protect the feminine object of his desires - despite the fact that he's been hired to kill said object of his desires. He's clearly described in much the same way as any typical Alpha Male type is described, and yet in a lot of ways he doesn't really fit the alpha male mold. He might have a take-charge attitude, yet he treats Sarah very much as an equal, and only occasionally attempts to tell her what to do. Even at his most adamant, however, he always stops short of outright forbidding her to do something, even if he thinks what she intends to do is highly ill-advised at best. He simply makes his feelings on the matter clearly and strongly known, but then stands back to let her do as she will without any further interference. There were actually a few times I wished he were more aggressive or overbearing with her, for he eventually ended up looking somewhat weak really since he sometimes ended up letting her walk over him in his desire to avoid unfairly trying to dictate to her.

Overall, though the story did have its issues, mostly stemming from the short length which forced the action to be rather rushed in several places, I thought this was a very enjoyable read. The story was interesting, with some refreshingly original elements, and there were several things that I wished the author had explored in greater detail, or let develop at a slower pace. A longer word count would have benefited this book in many ways I think. Still, for what it is, I think it was quite good, and I'd recommend it to those who like paranormal romances, perhaps just with a few caveats about needing to make some allowances for the short length. I give it 3½ stars, for while the writing is certainly deserving of 4 stars or better, there were too many minor issues for me to go that high with the overall rating.(less)

My Review:
This is one hot little book. Rukh is a djinn assassin who's been hired to kill Sarah. There's a couple of problems with that. The first is that he can see auras and is used to his hits having pretty dark auras. They aren't nice guys which is why someone wants them dead. That's not the case with Sarah. Her aura is light and sparkly and definitely not the sign of someone that needs to die. The second problem is, Rukh feels incredible chemistry towards Sarah. He's attracted to her...reall...more

I proposed this novella as November Book of the Month (in the PNR NaUBA Group) after reading the opening chapters some months earlier.

I loved it. Loved the premise (Djinn assassin falling in love with his target), loved the snappy dialogue and the sassy heroine.

The next words rushed out of her. "And breakfast's on me."

"Normally I wouldn't protest," he said, leaning closer. "But in public, I'd prefer a plate."

Lurved the hero, Rukh. He's a mutt, a half-breed in Djinn terms.

What do you do when the one person who steals your heart is the person you’re meant to kill? That very intriguing premise sets up Mina Khan’s equally intriguing (and djinn-filled) paranormal romance novella.

The book gets right down to it, establishing a chemistry between the main characters immediately. It’s a pretty convincing chemistry, too, mostly of the “inexplicable attraction” sort but accessible and sweet. And yet, ”sweet” is not all there is to it. The treatment of Sarah and Rukh’s attraction is rife with delicious sensuality. The sizzling connection between the two leads is clear, visceral, ever-present. It was perhaps the deeper emotion that felt somewhat abbreviated, though I imagine such would logically be the case in a shorter story.

I’ll take one Rukh, please! The male lead in this book was perhaps the biggest draw for me, with his intensity and yummy hotness. ^_^ There were the beginnings of some very intriguing elements to his personality and past. And the balance of his being ruthless and principled yet emotional and passionate…it was intriguing and kept me wanting to discover more about Rukh.

Sarah’s pretty cool, herself. I must admit, I had to give props for her being half-Jamaican, because it’s not terribly often that one would find such a heroine–especially one that embraces her ethnicity and culture. Furthermore, Sarah proves to be reasonable and logical, which is a breath of fresh air from borderline-TSTL characters occasionally found in the romance genre. When a woman wants to be sure that the hot but intimidating and random guy she just met is legit and not a creepazoid? I’m all for it!

There were quite a few single-line bits of exposition that had me thinking, man, this tidbit could totally be developed into something that supports such-and-such later development. In fact, I somewhat wish a few of the passing references were developed into full-on plot- or expository points (Sarah’s past preternatural exposure, Rukh’s hard childhood and djinn background, his profession). But ultimately, this novella is still a solid, sexy, fun story.

It would be so very cool to explore some more tales from this world. The djinn aspect was very engaging (and different, thank goodness), and it looks like there is much more beneath the surface of what was introduced here in this story. From the ethereal plane to the djinn laws and societal structure…I’m thirsting for more of Khan’s djinn. ^_^(less)

This was a compelling read. I was drawn in by the mystery as well as the strength of the connection between the main characters. The chemistry between the hero and heroine was totally sexy and hot! The layering of paranormal elements on top of a human conflict was well written and believable. I liked the instant attraction but growth of feelings between the two - interspersed with lots of hot bedroom action - was superb. This novella grabbed my attention and kept me on my toes right to the end.

This short story was a refreshing change to a lot of the paranormal books out there. It was the first time that I have read a book about Djinn.
In this story the Djinn named Rukh, is a hired assasin and has been hired to target a reporter named Sarah. Unfortunatley for Rukh, he is immediately attracted to Sarah and the idea of killing her is not something that he is looking forward to.

This is the first paranormal / djinn book I've ever read... so it was interesting to see how the character(s) change their shape and form as the story flows. An interesting story with a fast-paced plot that makes you want to know how the story will finally end. Will Rukh O'Shay and his love find peace with each other or will revelation of the truth tear them apart.

USA Today interviewee Mina Khan is a wonderful writer, and her djinns are masculine, compelling and irresistibly sexy. Her books are unabashedly erotic, and steamy hot, but they're not the thin-to-nonexistent-plot-linking-tiresomely-detailed-sex-scenes that you so often find in erotic fiction. I enjoyed the characters, the story and ... well ... all the different kinds of action, too.

The Djinn's Dilemma was a fast-paced read with strong, interesting characters. Mina Khan does a great job of pulling the reader into the story. Good luck putting this one down once you get started, because the twists and turns will keep you turning pages until you're finished.

I loved Jasmine ans Rukh's story. It was set in a vivid world and held a bit of mystery which kept me interested. The sex was hot and only added to the love story.
