Aladdin's Samovar
by
Lauren Sweet (Goodreads Author)
A nice, normal, boring life—that’s all Amber Polaski ever wanted. One where she’s not unchaining her flaky New Age mom from endangered trees, bailing her out of jail, or getting dragged to naked pagan rituals. But when Amber finds a sexy genie in her antique brass samovar, any hope of normal goes up in smoke.
It’s just one tiny little wish—to find her long-lost father. What...more

I had so much fun reading Aladdin’s Samovar. It was a fun and entertaining ride. There are a few things that I wish I could change (yes pun intended) but the good outweighs them. Let’s start with the good.
First, I loved Sweet’s characters. I got lucky enough to get another main character that I really enjoyed reading about. Amber is far from perfect…but she is funny and endearing. I...more

I loved this book!!! Amber was hands down one of the best characters I have had the pleasure to meet in a while. I suppose if you had grown up surrounded by the interesting array of people that Amber did, it would make for a pretty unflappable person. So when Amber is house cleaning preparing for the arrival of her mother, she decides to shine all the metal in the house. This in turn leads to reading an inscription that she uncovered on the side of a samovar and wouldn't you know it? Out pops a...more

One rule-polishing your silver causes weird things to happen.
I have to say that this was a really great read. The characters were so personable. Amber, the main character, was almost as funny and witty as Darynda Jones' Charley Davidson. Ambers mother Indigo, is the funniest chick ever! She walks around in bright caftans saying the wackiest things, all the while meditating naked at the worst times. And how could I poossibly forget Jasper, the smoking hot genie? How couldn't yo...more

I loved the humor in Aladdin's Samovar. I was on the edge of my seat laughing and biting my nails the whole time. Sweet has a way with words that I haven't seen before.
The Good
Here's the Story...
Amber just knew it. When she saw that damn genie smoke his way out of her samovar, she knew that accepting the offer for one wish would be a bad idea. But did she listen to her instincts? Noooo. One simple wish, to have a relation...more

This is the most fun I've had in a book for a long time. As a bit of light entertainment, this one is hard to fault. Well-written and consistently amusing, it's good, quirky fun: very entertaining. A thoroughly modern (& sexy) Aladdin, with a plot that moves along at a good pace. The ditsy earth-mother mom alone is worth the price of entry. Is she really as crazy as she seems, or is it a carefully gauged ruse to throw everyone off-guard? And can Jasper the genie really be trusted? Or will Am...more
Aladdin's Samovar was one of the funniest books I've ever read. Amber is a down-to-earth, hard-working girl who has to balance her flower-power mother's paranoia of authority against the mischievous evil genie's antics to entice Amber to grant wishes. A simple wish to meet her absent father turns into a fast-paced race for sensitive data with the local Mob. Mousy Amber becomes Super Hero Amber as she figures out who is lying (everyone) and who she can trust (nobody) before getting herself killed...more
I feel absolutely awful. I agreed to review this title last year, but due to personal issues I never got around to writing a review. And now, I can't give it a detailed review like I want to, because I don't remember enough small details about it. I do remember, however, that I fell in love with this book. It was absolutely hilarious; I was actually laughing out loud, and often. It reminded me a lot of the Stephanie Plum series, with the predicaments that Amber got herself into and the incredibl...more
Very funny; lies, lies and more lies; hot chemistry just leaking out all over the place the place with good looking men; and a genie.
Story begins with a cautionary plea not to clean. "It started out so innocently—with a chamois cloth, some silver polish, and a bottle of Brasso. Okay, if she were honest, Amber would have to say it really started with her irrational need to clean the house for her mother's impending visit."
Poor Amber, her mother is a new age flake (no offense to new agers), her mo...more

It's rare that I give 5 stars to a book. When I do, you can be sure there was something special about it. 'Aladdin's Samovar' is an entertaining romp of a book. I loved the characters, I was taken in by the plot, and --this is how I really know I liked it -- I wanted more. I seriously hope Ms. Sweet has another installment up her sleeve. I'm not done yet.
Here's the real question, though: Why did I like this so much, when I find Janet Evanovich so annoying? Superficially, there is much in common....more

This book was pure entertainment from start to finish. Light, fun and funny, I loved the exploits of Amber and her super-hot genie named Jasper. When they weren't bantering, they were taking on the mafia (with the help of Amber's super-crunchy mom and suave dad). To Lauren Sweet's credit, both the characters and the plot succeed on multiple levels in this well-written, fast-paced book.
I really enjoyed this,.. the ideas.. storyline and everything :)
I felt somit was missing or maybe its just me, no idea :)

FUN. Okay, let's make that point again FUN!
Amber and her genie, which pops out of the samovar, have a hilarious adventure, mixing nasty mafia types with deeply spiritual mother and lots of dogs.
The premise is ... be careful what you wish for, and Amber wants to meet her father. That takes some arranging, but hey, what are genies for?
Loved it, and will read the next.
