I wanted to enjoy this, especially since I received a free copy to review. But after muddling through the first seventy pages, I just couldn’t take it anymore. When I started reading Demon Vampire I felt it was a refreshingly new and powerful story about vampires with a twist. There are so many cookie cutter vampire books out there and Demon Vampire is definitely different than any story I've read. I fell in love with the characters and found myself truly caring for what happens to them. Even the antagonists have their own inner conflicts that make them unique and interesting. It's like walking into a dream where you do not trust your senses because you do not know what is around the mist coming up off the ground. You see someone in the distance that seems familiar, maybe the way they walk, or the tilt of their head, and you feel just a little bit 'safer', but can you be sure they are truly who they appear to be? What power do we actually have control of in our dreams, what can we actually do? Is it possible to transport power from a dream into the realm of the living? Ask yourself, are you awake right now, or are you dreaming?
Demon Vampire has totally blown me away! Virgil has made me look at vampires in a whole new light in which I have welcomed! I have read and reviewed A LOT of books, and to give credit where it is due, they were all five stars in my eyes because I do not judge an author who writes about my favorite character lightly. But what Virgil has done should be no threat to the tone other authors write about the Vampire. Virgil is truly unique with such a unprecedented imagination that I feel has limitless power. He takes you into the deepest, darkest heart of a Vampire and allows you to experience their hopes, dreams, wishes. Oh, you didn't know Vampires have those like humans do? It's not always about the cloak and blood. There are dark dark secrets that only the elite are to know, there is a hunger for power and vengeance beyond belief. It tears and rends the soul to get it's point across to you, the reader. Do you dare take the invitation it has to offer you? Do you dare take the hand offered to you, to meet the Demon Vampire?
In my review I have given very little information about characters, plot line, etc. I feel looking at other reviews, this has been done. I wanted to write a view from the very depths of my soul and imagination and what 'I' felt about it. I am still feeling it, and I do not know if I will ever recover or realize I have completed the book and am safe in my chair, typing you this review.

Vampire tale - long story, but confusing. This story left me a little confused. The prologue starts out with a not-dead creature in the morgue. It is covered in some type of armor and has no pulse. It seems to have fangs, so the coroner decides it is some type of vampire. After some time, it gets up from the table and starts moving around. This was a move away from the recent surfeit of fluffy, angsty, moralising vampires, back to the darker, nastier creatures as envisaged by authors like Anne Rice and Charlaine Harris. (view spoiler)[Despised by the vampires as being a sign of weakness, vampeals, if they survive long enough, do have the option of undertaking the ritual of Redgold, to make them full vampires. All these supernatural creatures have gifts, which vary from one to another. They may be able to influence people, read thoughts, or affect matter transformation.

At the centre of the story is Zack Giver, a teenage boy who learns he is a vampeal with a particularly rare gift—he is only of only seven 'hosts' to a demon vampire, in this case an ancient being called Salas. As Zack learns more about the dark world he is now a part of, we also learn more about Salas and some of the other supernatural beings Zack meets, as their stories are interspersed throughout the novel. Zack's companion through much of his story is Kyli, beautiful and mysterious, the daughter of the vampire David.

Virgil Allen Moore sets wonderfully described scenes, with a fine attention to detail. The characters have depth, and I particularly liked Marin, the enigmatic vampire assassin who delights human audiences with his own unique style of music. I was also intrigued by Ellen and Grey, although we didn't see too much of them in this book—I hope they show up again in later volumes in the series. I wasn't too sure about Zack's character—sometimes he seemed to do and say things which didn't quite gel with the initial impression I got of him—that he was fairly quiet, something of a loner as his friends had moved away, and so on. There were points where he achieved quite spectacular levels of brattishness, although given the changes he was going through during the book, that's maybe forgiveable. Combined with a father who was sufficiently absent that you'd expect child services to be involved, and occasional lapses into behaviour that you might not expect from a 14 year old, I did struggle a bit with Zack's character on occasion—though maybe I'm just too many years away from being a teenager now—and it was a sometimes a relief to escape into the stories of the other characters.

These histories were, for me, the most enjoyable part of the novel. We learn about Marin as he is changed from human to vampire; we discover Malio, the child-monster with some very severe problems and the vampires that he blames for causing them. We meet Damien, the priest turned vampire, and his quest to learn more about his new state of being, along with his companionship with Yugo, who Damien turned vampire to save his life, and who in turn changes Ohrn. There are others, but these were the stand-out chapters.

This was definitely intriguing, and I look forward to reading further instalments in the series, to find out what happens to these characters and, hopefully, to meet new ones. Virgil Allen Moore's writing style did take a little getting used to—a lot of the text is quite poetic, and often there are sections where many of the sentences are about the same length, which can sometimes make for choppy reading rather than flowing smoothly. As an epic poem, it might work very well, but I'm not entirely sure it converts well in a prose style. There are a few archaics scattered around, which is no bad thing, particularly when used in the history chapters, but the anachronistic "ok" showing up here and there in early medieval Germany didn't quite sit right. Salas is also guilty of using some extremely obscure language on occasion, and I'm not convinced it helps his character.

I give this four stars, since I'll almost certainly go back and re-read it at some point, and I do want to read future stories in the series. However, it doesn't quite make my Better Than Chocolate shelf, and here's why—typos. Curiously, not the sort of typos you would normally expect—transposed letters, wonky punctuation (though there were a few of the latter) and whatnot. These were the 'right' words, but the wrong spelling, almost like the book had gone through a speech-to-text process somewhere along the line. Things like taught/taut, or there/they're/their being used in the wrong context. If I'd listened to someone else reading the book, I wouldn't have noticed them, but in print they stick out somewhat and set the old proofreader alarms ringing. (hide spoiler)]

All in all, this was very enjoyable, and the author shows great promise. In many ways, the book was considerably better than some I've read from mainstream publishers, in terms of plot, description and characterisation. Congratulations Virgil!

I've read many books with vampire storylines, but Demon Vampire is very different. Virgil Allen Moore has crafted an extraordinary story with a unique protagonist, Zack Giver.

The title of Virgil Moore's book, Demon Vampire, might turn you off. The cover of his book might turn you off. Or they could be intriguing to you and be the reason you want to purchase the book. Either way Mr. Moore is successful in this paranormal/horror book.

First of all, this is a paranormal story involving vampires and such creatures. I have to admit that these books are starting to not draw me in as much anymore because there are so many of them. I haven't read a ton of them, but of the vampire stories I've read, this is not one to fall in the copy-cat boring category. Mr. Moore gives a new twist to a story of vampires.

Next, I consider this a horror story. I have friends who like horror and might laugh that I describe it as such since they read ones that would give me nightmares from being within touching distance of the book. Yet I call this a horror story because it gave me nightmares. That right there convinced quite a few people they have to read this book. I might to agree with that.

Though I view this story as a horror story, I have to admit I enjoyed. Horror usually is a strike 'no' for me. This one was not over the top scary which is a plus for me. It takes unusual twists and turns that keep the story fresh and the reader guessing. That is one of the strongest points of Mr. Moore's work. The plot is very intricate and far from simple which is what I like. This on the other hand, made it difficult for me to follow in the beginning. I was very confused and was wondering if any of it would make sense. Yet the more I read the more I grew to understand and appreciate the writer's style.

I did find quite a few editing issues within the book but not enough to detract you from the story. At times, the dialogue seems a little unreal, but we are talking demon vampires here. They are unreal themselves.

Do you like paranormal stories? Do you like to read unique twists on vampires? Do you like mildly horror stories? Do you enjoy complicated stories and plots? Then you have to check this book out. I wanted to stop reading it because of the horror characteristics yet I had to know what was going to happen to this young man who was finding out that his 'ordinary' life is far from ordinary. Mr. Moore has done a great job of giving me a few sleepless nights.

While this book is well written and has fabulous language, I struggled with it. I just did not connect with the characters or care what happened to them. I am not sure why, since as noted the book is very well written. It could be that the style of writing did not resonate with me.

Some stories are like appetizers, others are like lunch and my favorites are like desserts. In the case of Demon Vampire, I can easily say its like a Thanksgiving Dinner with every single fixin' you can think of!

The first thing that struck me as I read this story was the Anne Rice feel to it. But I made the initial mistake of treating it like an Anne Rice novel, in which I can easily skip pages and not loose the thread of the story. Not with Demon Vampire, there is vital information everywhere! This brings me to the second thing I noticed: this book re-taught me to be patient, relax and enjoy the story. I am very used to reading books that are 250 pages or less where the plot and dialogue is developed very quickly. In this case, especially at the beginning, the characters get there when they get there, in this book there's no rushing.

First we are introduced to Zack, an awkward teen, who, even though has weird blood-filled dreams, he doesn't feel like he's anything special. Then we meet David and his daughter Kyli who are plotting to kill Zack because of what lives inside him, an ancient, evil Demon Vampire. One that can and will destroy civilizations with its uncontrollable power. At this point I thought I could predict the main plot, but I was so wrong!

As the story unfolds we meet Orhn Damascus, a vampire/vampeal that comes out of the blue to torture Zack. This torture teaches us important things about Zack and Kyli who comes to rescue him, and we get to know Orhn's fascinating story of love and loss later on in the book. As new vampires and vampeals are introduced, we learn about their stories and relationships with each other. As it is with people, there are "good" and "bad" vampires and the thing about immortality is that if a vampire has a grudge, it will fester and grow for centuries and so far I didn't see any of them wanting to "forgive and forget".

The story goes from the present day where Zack is trying to figure out what the hell he is, to the past, where we get to find out the stories of the different vampires and vampeals surrounding Zack. There are several centuries-old relationships in this story, but the main one is between Zack and Kyli.

The ending of Demon Vampire seemed to me like the ending of the Fellowship of the Ring, you can tell there will be more. Even in the last chapter, Kyli is still explaining things about the Vampire Elders. I'm sure all this wealth of information will be needed when the next books in the series come along. When you finish the book, one thing I can almost bet is that you will go back and re-read Chapter One!

This author's work speaks volumes...
Being a person who is not easily impressed, and only write reviews when credit is due. This certainly is the case with Virgil Allen Moore's work.
His words(the book is 500packed pages)seeps into your mind and produces an lucid trance from page one.
You do not get a simple novel, Moore has perfected his work and leaves a lasting, sweet quality upon your soul!

I REALLY enjoyed this book. It started off a bit odd, but I quickly became completely absorbed in the storyline. I enjoyed how the author eventually began to go back and forth through time so the reader can get the back story of the other characters in the story, and you can't help but root for Zack as he struggles with the knowledge that he is a half-vampire and has a demon inside of him that may potentially take him over. There were an extreme amount of misspelled words and punctuation errors...more

Demon Vampire by Author Virgil Allen Moore left me completely mesmerized. His attention to detail was remarkable, almost poetic at times. The plot of the story draws you in deeply and uncovers the darkest side of the vampire with almost a perverse beauty of surrendering to the blood lust. This is a very well written exciting new series. Virgil Allen Moore's writing has a way of immersing you into his vampire world. Gone are the stereotypical vampires and legends. Mr. Moore quickly pulls us into his world where he rewrites the definition of vampire and leaves you craving for more. Initially, I was attracted to this becasue of the exquisitely beautiful cover girl, and I wasn;t really much of a vampire fan, but now that my mate and I have book read it, we're vampire fans for life, and want to read all this authors other books.
