Lola was an immature, shallow, self-centered brat, plain and simple. She talks about how...more
For a reviewer this was a treat to find in a book, this is definitely how many of us feel about books and reading, and reading these lines instantly cemented my attention to this book.
Lola is a young girl in love with a boy, Dougie, whose family is wealthy and whose mother hates her guts. His mother makes her an offer that she can't refuse, so she takes it and says goodbye to the love of her life in a...more
"Young Lola, under duress, accepts a huge bribe to break up with her boyfriend. The worst part is, the bribe is from his mother. Ten years later, when they meet again, her feelings for him are as strong as ever-but how is she going to win him back without telling him why she broke his heart in the first place?"
My thoughts on this book can be summed up in one sentence: "What a fun read!" Seriously, it really was a fun read and I ended up enjoying this book im...more
But really the best part is the, "Oink."
I’m angry when I think about it. But gosh she’s a good writer. This was enjoyable story telling about several characters with love interests. I was engaged all the way through. BUT I could not accept or enjoy the premise of the book - the conflict between the main couple. In the beginning Lola accepts money to break up with Doug. She needs the money to help someone else - it’s life or death....more
So...what about it...
Lola really never, ever, gave up on trying to get Dougie back -- even when he kept throwing daggers at her and quite frankly it was hilarious!
Don't worry, you don't have to be a sadist to appreciate the way Doug shuts her down, you just can't not enjoy it with Lola being Lola!
Plus, you have to admit, that from Dougie's point of view, he could have b...more
Which is why I don't like it. That level of predictability just isn't for me.
Less than half way through the story, I know with depressing certainty that Our Plucky Heroine will win Doug back,...more
1) I am a fan of steamy romance scenes and Jill Mansell left EVERYTHING to the imagination. Not a bad thing but just didn't suit my personal preference.
2) Despite doing a fairly good job of developing the rest of the characters. Dougie, the main love interest remained at arms length to the audience throughout the whole book. I would have appreciated a few scenes from his point of view or just something to make him a bit mo...more
I found Lola to be shallow, unreasonable and a bit of a brat! And it seems I wasn't the only one.
I hate not finishing a book but I didn't really want to waste any more of my time on this one :/

I expected a lot more from this honestly. The characters were shallow and one-dimensional. A lot could have been left out of the book and it would have made no difference to the plot development. The whole book could have ended 200 pages sooner if Lola had just said why she needed the money. All the loose ends were tied up neatly and unbelievably.
Lola's characterization might have been the thing I liked least. She is shallow and obsessive and annoying. After 10 years she still has feelings for D...more

I really felt for Lola, I thought she was a great character and her reasons for doing what she did were right even though it meant losing the love of her life. In addition to this we see a lot of her thoughts during the novel and it kept me amused, in fact I saw a bit of myself in some of the thi...more
Most of Mansell’s characterizations (on an individual level) were wonderfully entertaining. Lola was funny and somewhat outlandish; she wasn’t afraid to be who she was despite leaving the man she loved behind to better the lives of her family. Gabe, her BFF, was a great counterpart with his dry-wit...more
