Kirra Hayward is a year ten student at Freemont Grammar. She's very intelligent and has skipped ahead in maths and science, taking classes at year twelve level. She's assigned a project for maths and decides to cheat and see if she can find something online that she can copy. While looking she discovers a website entitled Crack The Code. At first she dismisses it but then a number jumps out at her and once she's seen it, other letters and numbers pop out and before she realises she's come up wit...more
Do you love puzzles ? I know I do , my favourites tend to be the word puzzles. In Rose Foster's new series, we meet sixteen year old Kirra Hayward who is a mathematics genius . One school day during maths , the class is given an assignment to create a puzzle which includes an equation or mathematical reasoning. Kirra , unsure of what to do exactly logs on to the net and starts to google number puzzles. She comes across one and submits it , nothing happens and she leaves it at that, though it's s...more
Kirra is just a normal, average 16yo with a younger sister and brother. She’s excellent at science and maths and tends to be a bit of a social outcast, not at all concerned with things like clothes and boys like her sister. However it turns out that Kirra can do a pretty extraordinary thing… she can crack a code that to almost everyone else, doesn’t even make sense. There’s no explanation for how and why she can do it, she just can.
This makes her very, very valuable to all sorts of people and or...more

One click of the mouse forever changed the life of Kirra Haywood. She stumbles across a mysterious "Crack the Code!" website and solves the puzzle without a second thought. A week later on her way home from school, she's kidnapped by the people who uploaded the code. Gone without a trace, without a shred of evidence left behind for her family to track her whereabouts. Apparently she's one of the only living people in the world who can decipher the Spencer Code. It's not something you can learn t...more
So nice to read an YA without a vampire or werewolf to be seen (not that I don't enjoy a well-written vamp etc). Still, The Industry made for a pleasant change (though not without it's hint of the paranormal - cracking codes because the answer just appears to you? Really?) The very 'ordinary' (if geeky outsider)female protagonist was very appealing and believable (but I have to say the 'girlie' sister/mother combination was annoyingly hackneyed but their appearance was brief and therefore beara...more
This is another really good book, but (spoiler) I didn't like the ending.

Welcome to The Industry - a thrilling espionage drama that reads like a Hollywood blockbuster penned by debut Australian author, Rose Foster. It begins with a click of a mouse as Kirra Haywood navigates onto a mysterious website that challenges her to a puzzle. What she thinks is some fun is a whole lot more as this is no ordinary puzzle but a worldwide attempt to find anyone who can solve it. It's called the Spencer Code and apparently only 3 people in the world possess the ability to crack it....more
Wow!! I’m just totally amazed by this book. When I received this book for review I was a little skeptical about it because I normally wouldn’t pick this up for myself. Now I have a new found love for thrillers!
Kirra Hayward is just your average Aussie girl, attending high school and doing her homework. She is however super smart, and whilst trying to find ideas for her maths assignment she comes across a ‘puzzle’ on the internet. Solving this code came naturally to her but Kirra couldn’t seem to...more

Reminiscent of "Spies like us', The Industry's main protagonist, Kirra Hayward gets in trouble for her intelligence. A skilled mathematician and codebreaker, she breaks a code for a competition - a competition which proves to be a trap.
While I enjoyed the premise of the novel, I found some parts of the narrative a little bumpy. I felt, at the end, that there were too many balls in the air, that the author was not really sure how to round off this story while still leading us into the sequel.

I was in the mood for some mindless reading so I picked up this YA thriller by Rose Foster, and was surprised by how much I liked it. The Industry focusses on Kirra, who solves an online puzzle and gets kidnapped so she can aid a criminal organisation in their illegal endeavours. In this book Foster describes a whole world of people who are part of The Industry - from Decoys whose job it is to distract local authorities while the real crime happens somewhere else, to intelligence agencies that k...more

The first in a planned trilogy, it combines action, adventure, espionage and excitement centered around a shadowy international organisation known as The Industry. Held prisoner, Kirra is tortured by Latham to provide the codes her captors need. The...more

Cover:
It's absolutely cool! I love how the codes are forming the girl's face, the dark background and it gives this cryptic feeling!
Story:
Can you break the code?
Kirra Hayward is just your average student. Well, she is a bit more than average. Even though she is only sixteen, she is taking 2 extension classes because she is just that good. One day, her teacher gives her an assignment to make puzzles. Kirra thinks it's really la...more

The Industry is a promising to a thrilling new series by Aussie debut author Rose Foster. Michael Grant blurbed on the cover and you all know that I’m a big fan of him and his work so of course I wanted to read another thriller like that of BZRK. Kirra’s journey from breaking this code on the net to being abducted to learning what she is and what The Industry is – the thrill-ride never ends. It’s like you yourself are being injected with the Balcescu drug, the drug that is injected i...more

The Industry is a novel so packed with mystery and action, you won't know what to do with yourself! I was honoured to have received a bound manuscript of this amazing book to read and review. My first experience: brilliant. I could barely contain my excitement after turning the first page and realising how greatly it would meet my expectations!

This novel is so exciting and sleek, it's like an action film in book form, and it's YA! But don't get me wrong, it's not some Spy Kids bullshit; it's more like Chuck. The character development is really interesting, and I particularly love that the author used a multicultural cast without having their cultures be the basis of their identity. Not every east Asian character needs to have a parental expectation crisis! I'd love to get my hands on the sequel.
I am not sure about this one. It was packed-packed certainly, but maybe a little too violent??
Also, the writing kept pulling me out of the story. There were times when I wanted Kirra's thoughts on what was happening but mostly I got them when the feelings and reactions were obvious.
But I know teens will love it (they already do), and I do want to know what happens next, so I will be looking out for 'The Estate'.

THE INDUSTRY is an addictive, fast-paced, sometimes witty, over-the-edge thriller that will keep you on constant alert and make you wonder what's going to happen next to our Kirra and the fate of mankind. Even with some untrusting alliances, some gun-to-gun action, or simply good old torture with a lesson waiting to be learned, you will never know what to expect when it comes to Rose Foster's epic writing!

4.5 stars!
The Industry was fantastic. A thriller with a great cast of characters - good, bad, evil and questionable people everywhere! Plenty of potential for the rest of the series.
