Gastien, by Caddy Rowland, is an interesting story set in an era and a nation that I haven’t read much about before. The writing style resembles that of F.Scott Fitzgerald, though it lacks his poetry and lyricism.

The positives: fully developed, relateable characters involved in a tightly written, character driven plot. One grows to sympathize with, but not pity, Gastien even as you mentally plead with him to see the dangers he courts and walk away from them.

This book was mesmerizing! It is not for the faint of heart because of language and abuse. With that said, I truly have fallen in love with Gastein!

Gastein was placed on this Earth on a farm with lots of siblings. It was in France in the 1900's and his father very abusive physically and verbally. The novel tells the story of Gastien, who is raised on a farm by an abusive father and a loving mother. As the eldest child, Gastien is expected to take over the family business but he doesn’t have the heart or desire for the work. Instead Gastien is a born artist and wants to go to Paris to be not just a successful artist but also a great lover to as many women as possible. Monogamy and long-term relationships are not on Gastien’s agenda, it is all about art and sex but can he survive the gritty streets of Paris?

This is a long and eventful story written in a style that moves the story along at a good pace. Gastien’s background is not a pleasant one. As the eldest of many children, he is supposed to take the reins and run the farm after his father but Gastien wants only to paint. His father deems this transgression to be akin to homosexuality and Gastien takes his share of beatings before finally leaving home and seeking his fortune in Paris. There are contrasting fortunes for Gastien. He needs money for supplies, food and a home but the French capital is an unforgiving place for young artists. While many men Gastien’s age are in education, Gastien is on the streets with only his wits and good looks to get him by. The longer he is on the streets, the less he can rely on his looks. Gastien sinks extremely low many times in the book and some of the things he has to go through are unpleasant to read.

Improving day by day with his art, Gastien is disciplined with the craft but he is also full of hormones and has little trouble finding his way into the beds of many grateful women. Though Gastien is undoubtedly a great lover, his attitude to women often makes him unappealing. Gastien is happy to satisfy women, something his contemporaries neglect to do, but once the sex is over Gastien can quickly discard women without a second thought. He does, however, form one meaningful relationship with a woman but this young artist is not an easy one for women to tame. As Gastien’s fortunes improve he takes a position with a rich family, painting their portraits and having the mother and two daughters lusting after him in the process. This is in the latter stages of the book and Gastien’s journey reaches one of its most brutal moments. The fact he continues to chase his dream is admirable but does he make it?

I enjoyed Gastien and fully intend to read the other parts in the series. Gastien is an unusual protagonist in that sometimes you will feel for him, other times you may frown upon his treatment of women. The sacrifices he makes for his art are admirable and there are moments when you will wonder how much more suffering he has to endure or whether he will fulfil that long-term goal of having his own studio. The later books promise even further insight in Gastien’s story and I am looking forward to those.

Gastien is an emotional journey of a young man with a dream he is determined to achieve. Along the way, Gastien endures starvation, poverty and when things are going well he enjoys the many pleasures of the women in Paris. Not always a likable character, Gastien’s story is still worth following.(less)

It is soon realized that Gastien has lived a very hard life under his father’s constant abuse, both physically and emotionally, that his mother is powerless to stop. Through the terrors and beatings that Gastien endures, he finds the time to sneak in his love of drawing and painting. As Gastien comes of age, he leaves his family’s farm and ventures to Paris and follows his dream of becoming a successful artist. Once in Paris, Gastien experience problem after problem, but he is determined to reach his goal and overcome the many obstacles that stand in his way. But at what cost? Will Gastien be able to achieve his dream or will he lose himself along the way?

Not only was this book written very well, it was written in a way that I felt transported back in time. The amount of description in every aspect of Gastien’s world was mesmerizing and had me turning the page until the early hours of the morning. There were a couple editorial mistakes, but nothing major that took away from the reading experience. Overall, this book was a good read and I am looking forward to reading the second book after I read the ending to this story.

When I first started reading this book, I wasn’t sure if I would like it. Let my clarify. The book has a lot of brash and to-the-point dialogues when it comes to sexual matters. In fact, when I was reading the book I was hoping that the focal point of the book would switch back to the art aspect of the story. Sex was a strong focal point in this story, and to me, this wasn’t the type of romance book that has women swooning. Don’t get me wrong, I like reading adult romance books, but these scenes had a very perverse feel to them. While I was reading the book and came upon these moments, I was actually trying to read through them as fast as I could because they just seemed very perverse. This may be the case because the story is told from Gastien’s point of view, of whom is a man just discovering the body of a female and his desires. Maybe if it were coming from the women’s points of view it may have been better to read, but this aspect of the book would be one that knocks down the rating. I felt that these scenes were incorporated just a little too much and took away from the focal point of the story; Gastien and his dream to become a successful artist in Paris. There is one scene in particular near the end (I don’t want to give anything away) that I had a difficult time reading because it felt so wrong. Which I know was the point, but a fair warning to all, this book should not be intended for anyone younger than an adult. Other than this though, the book was a joy to read. I loved “experiencing” Paris in that era, and I especially loved the scenes of Gastien working at the restaurant and being with his friends. I loved reading about Gastien’s struggles, his artwork, and the relationships he established along the way.

This is the story of a young boy, Gastien, growing into a man , and the journey he takes along the way during the 1800s in France. Caddy sent me “Gastien: The Cost of the Dream” for review. I had a vague idea what the story would be about but I had no idea it would be so emotionally profound. If you’re looking for a cheery, easy-breezy, romantic novel this is not it. Caddy gives readers a look into the life, from child to young man, of the determined and resilient artist Gastien. Throughout the book I had feelings of joy, admiration, sorrow, fear, disgust, disappointment, and anger. I had a vague idea what the story would be about but I had no idea it would be so emotionally profound. If you’re looking for a cheery, easy-breezy, romantic novel this is not it. Caddy gives readers a look into the life, from child to young man, of the determined and resilient artist Gastien. Throughout the book I had feelings of joy, admiration, sorrow, fear, disgust, disappointment, and anger. There aren’t too many books that can ring so many emotions from me but this one did it. I loved that this book was from a male perspective. The hardships Gastien endures to achieve his dream are unfathomable. Just when I had hope that his life was going in a positive direction another disaster would strike and they only got worse. This poor character could not catch a break. At one point towards the end of the story, I literally had to pause after each page to compose myself. I knew I had to read the story completely to give a fair review but it was so emotionally exhausting that I had to prepare myself when I knew certain situations were only going to get worse. Gastien is a charming, intelligent, talented and determined character. While I admired his willingness to work hard to achieve his dream, I didn’t like that he was willing to sacrifice his dignity to do so. I also didn’t care for his dismissive attitude towards the ramifications of his sexual marathons. For a character who so adamantly didn’t want to be tied down by marriage or babies he doesn’t take any precautions to ensure he doesn’t get women pregnant. In my opinion this book would have been just as good without the in depth sexual situations. The language used is mildly vulgar but because the terms are in French it tones it down somewhat (there is a glossary of terms so you understand the French meanings). Caddy packs no punches for political correctness in this book. She includes topics of abuse, homelessness, homosexuality, power struggles, and the question of what would you do to achieve your dreams. I'm sure we've all looked at someone's situation and told ourselves we would never make the choices they did for the desired outcome. This book will open your mind to the realization that until you have been in the 'exact' position not to judge others for their choices. I give “Gastien: The Cost of the Dream” 4/5 stars. The only reason I don’t give this book a five star rating is because I save that for books I would reread. This story is so intense and wrung me out emotionally that I could not bring myself to read it again. That being said if you are a reader willing to push beyond your boundaries I strongly recommend getting this book.(less)

Gastien is brought up on a farm. The eldest of his siblings, he is expected to work hard even as a little boy. His father is a very cruel man who beats him often and gives him verbal abuse. All poor Gastien wants to do is to be able to paint and be an artist, but his father thinks his dream is too feminine and doesn‘t want to know about it. Luckily for Gastien though, his mother believes in him and helps him as much as she can even though she also gets beaten. When Gastien is nearly eighteen he is kicked out of his home by his father and so makes his own way to Paris. He faces many hardships including sleeping on the streets and having to search in the garbage bins for food. A lot of the time he doesn’t know where his next meal will come from. Being a young man he is also anxious to explore his sexuality and wants to be a great lover. He wants women to enjoy sex. But he doesn’t let himself get too close to anyone. He wants to be an artist and can’t have anything getting in his way.

I found this book to be very addictive reading and thought it to be very well written. I really felt for Gastien and all he went through. Just when he seemed to be getting back on his feet something else would happen. Some of the things he went through were just shocking. He was forced to do the most awful things just so he could get money in order to be able to rent a studio for himself. I guess when you are really desperate though you take all kinds of risks.

I found having the glossary at the front of the book to be very handy. Some of the language was pretty colourful to say the least, but it sounded good in French. The author has also included an endnote for each French word the first time it is used, as a reminder.

If you enjoy reading this book, I’m sure like me you will be waiting eagerly to read Part 2 which will be out soon. I certainly can’t wait to read it!(less)

I really enjoyed the story of Gastien. I found myself looking forward to reading about him and his triumphs and tribulations. It's a well written story.

I wish there had been more details about the clothes that people wore, the foods they ate, etc. What did Gastien read? Who were his favorite authors? Dumas? Hugo? This book, by Caddy Rowland was one of the most emotional reads I have ever read. I am not a crier, I never cry, not watching sad movies, reading sad books, I am not a crier. Period. However, while reading this, I had experienced so many different emotions, that I had never thought possible while reading only one book! I was riding one of the most emotional rollercoasters! Almost 500 pages and a story set in 19th century France, you would think that this story will drag at some points. Honestly, it doesn't. Gastien has so many different sides to him, you will be thoroughly entertained from beginning to end.

This book was incredible…..it drew me in like a moth to light, somewhat addicting. I could not wait to read what was going to happen next. It was extremely hard to put down. It was almost like being inside Gastien’s head or reading his diary as things happened, feeling his pain, triumphs, heartbreaks and happiness. Highly recommend this book.

I was surprised to discover that this book was written by a woman, because it had a distinct feel of being written by a chauvinistic man! This book is filled with very adult content, the kind of stuff that would make you feel dirty if you were reading it in public (or in my case, at work).
There were a couple of minor errors, but overall it was sound editing.

OMGosh, I love this book. I wanted to take poor Gastien home for my very own. I would hae taken care of the poor boy. But he does come out ahead in the end. But oh what he had to endure. I look forward to the next Gastien nove. Thank you so much for letting me read this book.

Excellent book, this is the first half of Gastien's life. I had a hard time putting this down because I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. I fell in love with Gastien almost from the start. He was so focused on his dream and refused to let anything get in his way, but of course there are many bumps along the way. If your like me plan on buying the next book as soon as your done with this one.
