The good: fun, resourceful heroine; cute kid; great setting. The not-so-good: hardly intriguing mystery; random identity revelation almost completely out of nowhere with only five pages to go; but worst of all: what is this romance? When they got to the big oh-I-love-you-be-with-me-always scene, I honestly thought maybe my copy had accidentally left out a few chapters leading up to it because it was so completely out of nowhere. Good way to waste a few sunny hours though.

Good book. I liked both Annabelle and Simon. Annabelle really wanted to get away from the school. I loved the way that she was able to get the interview she needed - it showed her determination and her creativity. I also liked the way that she refused to back down when confronted by Simon about her presence there. The way that she came to care so deeply for the young duke, Nicholas, was heartwarming and I loved that she refused to give up on getting him exactly what he needed. Her enjoyment of t...more

Really didn't like this book. So many things wrong with it too.

It of course follows the formula that 99% of historical romances do, but that's not even my problem with it. If I didn't like that formula, I'd have stopped reading them after I discovered they were all the same back when I was 12.

As this book is written, there is no possible way the leads would have fallen in love. They spend 85% of the book away from each other and fighting. And the scenes that do have them together and happy are...more

Even if the slipper fits, will it make my dreams come true?

Having known the life at the bottom of the social ladder Annabelle Quinn finds her escape and grabs it. Annabelle has lived shackled by her illegitimacy so having the opportunity to become the governess to a titled child is the road to freedom and all too soon the only lesson this child needs is the one Annabelle can provide, love. The problem however is his uncle Lord Simon Westbury who wants nothing to do with her or his nephew despite...more

Shh I'm reading!
I liked the story, but didn't feel a connection between Annabelle and Simon. That was missing for a couple reasons:
1. They spent little time discussing anything except for Nicholas, the young Duke of Kevern, so I didn't feel like they really knew each other.
2. The sexual tension was almost nonexistent (which is tragic when you consider they don't kiss until well over 200 pages into the book.

That said, the intrigue about who was responsible for mysterious happenings was predictable but fun, and...more

I had read the excerpt on the author's website and the beginning had me very very intrigued and excited. I particularly like romance novels involving governesses and thought this looked promising. It has a very Jane Eyre feel to it although the setting hints at her being very cinderella in many ways ie finding her prince charming and the red satin slippers. That part I liked. The kid was cute and adorable. Clarissa was charming & a champion. What lacked was perhaps more backstory to the red...more

All Annabelle Quinn wants is to see the world outside the girls’ school where she was raised. A stroke of luck lands her the position of governess to an orphaned duke. But while Annabelle finds herself instantly attached to her new charge, it’s the duke’s guardian who piques Annabelle’s interest. Lord Simon Westbury is a mass of contradictions. He’s gruff, distant and seemingly uncaring, but he can also be tender when Annabelle least expects it...more

Overall, not a bad book just not something overly special. The plot is one that has been used many times before...governess falls for guardian with a child that just needs some good love to be himself. There was a nice little subplot involving some ruins found on the land that adds a bit of intrigue. I am a sucker for Cinderella retellings so I like the glass, or in this case ruby, slipper and the fairy godmother and I also likes how the evil stepsisters and stepmother were not that exact case,...more

This was a charming romance with a lot to recommend it. A retelling of the Cinderella story with another twists to set it apart, a mystery that wasn't incredibly suspenseful but did add layers to the plot. I enjoyed Annabelle's relationships with her charge Nicholas, and her commitment to her reputation, which I often see given away too easily in these novels. I don't feel like Simon's backstory was full fleshed out, but I did enjoy Simon as well.

It was a fun story and I found a new author to re...more

While I loved the characters and the interaction between them, the plot was a tad... predictable. Personally I am a sucker for a good romance novel but you must face the facts- just about every concievable plot has been done. To death. A good author adds rheir own twists and brings in great characters and good interaction. I still really liked this book though.

The "romance" between Simon and Annabelle doesn't really get started till 71% (Chapter 20 for paperback). There isn't a single kiss before then. And then the twist in the last chapter was just ridiculous and didn't really have a point in being in the book.

Very much enjoyed this book. A little maddening that you get the impretion you will either never find out whats behind the shoes, or you have to wait until the last book, but I suppose thats part of the suspence.

This book as sweet and the way annabelle is with nichcols was sweet and mothery. But there was not enough romance. What there was was so little and you only saw once in the very end. Over all ok book

Just not as light or as fun as it looks. Simon is generally unlikable for most of the book. Really, really unnecessary and over-the-top unbelievable twist at the end.

Decent. Anabelle and Simon were pretty cute. I enjoyed reading about little Nicholas too.

Just a simple and sweet love story, the characters were endearing, the fairy tale angle a nice plot device, I'm interested in seeing where Drake takes this series. Lovely!!

I consistently felt as though I had missed several chapters in this book. The story started out quite slowly, and then suddenly started moving at an unbelievable (and not in a good way) pace. I do not plan to read another in the series.
