William Beckford's Vathek is a touchstone of eighteenth-century Orientalism and of the Gothic novel. Beckford's later work, The Episodes of Vathek, shares Vathek's irreverent and decadent style, and an edition that unites the two has long been overdue. The Broadview edition includes a newly discovered early version of the first episode, never before in print, that centres ...more

Bastet

Definitely top 5 most bizarre books I've read. Strange, strange, strange. Disjointed plot.

I was really excited to find a finished edition to the third episode written by Clark Ashton Smith included in the compilation of short stories edited by Lin Carter. It's called New Worlds for Old (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...). If you are familiar with the episodes you will remember the third episode ends suddenly. It's wonderfully elegant and so full of incense and dreamscapes. Very oriental and vividly so.

Vathek is an odd sort of Gothic novel, obsessed with the pleasures of the senses, the pernicious influence of women, and the desire to remain in a perpetual state of boyhood. It reads like a fable, with strange episodes throughout the narrative that seem to have little bearing on the overall plot, or at least aren't overtly explained. Overall, an interesting and pleasantly puzzling read.

gloriously bizarre and disturbing. this book has it all: a genie-devil who rolls himself into a ball and rolls all over town wreaking havoc, a deranged greedy hero, a maniac queen, a journey across exotic lands and a descent into hell. let me put it this way, this is a book that sometimes made me squeal in astonished delight. not kidding.

A great english novel of the gothic period. Although it tries to immitate the one thousand and one nights, it is extremely original in itself. This novel goes beyond the regular evil vs good portrayed in books of the time. Its depictions of homosexuality and incest are quite outstanding.

A bit too reliant on footnotes and historical references that 99% of us would rather not read about... still fun though.

For something this peculiar and convoluted, you'd think it'd be more entertaining.
