My favorite short stories about love. Through his poetic and precise writing, Bunin was able to describe the shades of love and emotions in each story of love. Yes, almost all of the love stories in this book are sad, but for me personally only a sad love story is a complete one. I keep coming back to this book for years.

Collection of 13 short stories. My favourite was a story Tanya (5 stars). A love story between maid and her lady's nephew that started with some dub-con and then surprising both blossomed into a love. A love story that was ended by cruel year 1917 .
This story and two others contains dub-con/non-con.

One of my favorite books - an elegant, charming, sad, yet beautiful collection of love stories. What an art - to make every episode and memory you want to stay (even sad ones!) lasting forever in a beauty of a written story...

Great style - short, to the point and poetic. It is amazing how Bunin can tell a story in a couple of pages and you feel for the characters. I just love Bunin, period.

I loved the richness and beauty of the language, magical writing. The only set back for me is that almost all stories in the book have sad ending, a bit depressing. Other than that - beautiful, beautiful...

This is when I read the first of Ivan Bunin. The kind of stories and descriptions that you always wanted and never realized how much you wanted.
Since then I have never missed anything that I have come across of Bunin. Sadly, he is one of the most difficult finds in bookstores in US, despite being a Nobel prize winner.

1 person liked it
