It seems astonishing that more research has not been done on Paul Gerhardt, the foremost of German hymnodists, but the work of Hewitt's 1917 dissertation remains the most obvious source on the poet-pastor. Without a knowledge of German, a large part of the book's riches remain locked away from the reader. The larger part of the book is a close examination of all the translations of Gerhardt's hymns into English with commentary on the positive and negative translation choices. This section is ...more
