UPDATE: After almost 6 weeks of slogging through this horrible book, I finished it just to see it through to the end and to make sure my first impression was correct. I dreaded bedtime each night when I would have this badly-written mystery standing between me and a good night's sleep. I am glad it is over and will not read another one like it! Yuck!
I have just started reading this book, and I loathe it. I hate to be so utterly negative about The Ape Who Guards the Balance, but I have ...more

The character development in this 10th book of the Amelia Peabody series was great fun - I've skipped a couple, and it was lovely to see Ramses & Nefret as adults (and David, whom I'd never met as a child). There's a nice love story, a realistically tense family reaction, arguments between Amelia and her growingly independent children... I enjoyed these aspects of the story. I also liked the excerpts from "Manuscript H", being Ramses' diary, so that we get to see events not solel...more

Everyone- but especially mystery lovers
If you've never read Elizabeth Peters, you should begin with the first in this series (Crocodile in the Sandbank) and work your way up as this is one of the later novels. Amelia Peabody Emerson is a fantastically stereotypical Victorian heroine- snappy, sharp, and utterly convinced of her own take of the world. Set in turn of the 19th/20th Century Egypt against the backdrop of the heyday of the great ancient Egyptian discoveries by the likes of Carter and his cohorts, these books are fast pace...more

Another Amelia Peabody mystery so soon because I needed to know what was happening with Ramses. Yeah, I've fallen under the Ramses' spell. In this one, the trio of young people are most active and have almost equal time in the plot. We encounter an old nemesis, an old foe and an old acquaintance. Everything is old and new. 1907, Emerson is still cleaning up old, discovered, abandoned tombs. We witness Theodore Davis' crew finding the tomb of Queen Tiyi, but is it really? High drama, murders and ...more

Sooo, Mrs. Emerson who truly believes that her opinions are best and who claims to be quite openminded, was confronted with some of her own narrowmindedness. David and Leah. I absolutely loved that the whole family came face to face with prejudices that never knew they had. And David and Ramses can bond over their possible jilted love. And I have now realized that all women who read this series are in love with Ramses. Hilarious. Personally, that Sethos....I think it is the bad boy type that...more

This book involves Peabody and Emerson (of course) but also the next generation, Ramses, David and Nefret. Fairly enjoyable, bringing in lots of plot and characters from previous books that I haven't read, so I probably didn't get the full impact. After I read the next one I've already taken out of the library, I may need to go back and start the series from the beginning...

The story takes place in London and Egypt - two places I have visited more than once. It was set in 1907 and her writing really made you feel you were in that era. Not fabulous, but intriguing as there was a mystery. I'll read some more of these, in paperback, just for fun.

Love these! Hayley and Kirst got me reading these last summer and they're addictive--especially now that Rameses is growing up. I love the Rameses/David/Nefret stuff--you were right, Kirst! ;)

I kind of wish Peters would write from Ramses's perspective all the time - the experiment definitely works. However, the bombshell in David's personal life gets a thumbs-down for poor setup.

Peters' Amelia Peabody mysteries are a good, quick read. Mystery set in Egypt among the world of Eygptologists and archaeologists so you learn a bit about while reading.

#10 for Amelia Peabody. Times are changing and becoming more strained and serious (but told with Amelia's usual wit and candor).

Another good Amelia Peabody mystery, but this book has a darker tone that lasts for the next few books in the series.
