Spoilers ahoy!
(Don't read this. It's long and rambling and mostly for me.)
I don't know what to think here. I've had this book in my epic to-read pile (see photo in my profile) for better than 9 months. After the disappointment of book 6, I wasn't in any hurry to leap into book 7. When I *did* finally start it, the beginning was a slog. So I put it down and read three other books instead.

The Destroyermen series continues to be outstanding. As the Americans expand their reach in this alternate world, more threats to their survival continue to pop up. There are three main conflicts here - the Alliance versus the Grik, the Dominion, and the rogue Japanese destroyer Hidoiame.
Anderson's storytelling is captivating. As expected, things don't always work out very well for the Alliance. The Alliance doesn't advance much, and these battles are sobering.

This is the 7th book in the "Destroyermen" series by Taylor Anderson and is replete with action, plot, development and doubt, taking the reader to fog shrouded cliffs in a multi-theater world war. Friends are encircled by a bitter and unforgiving enemy, key characters have suffered significant losses on both sides and new attacks are in the process of being mounted just as several new groups are introduced - when it ends... Obviously there is more - and I am left with baited breath in anticipati...more
Seventh in the Destroyermen military science-fiction series set in an alternate world.
My Take
Hah! You only thought it was busy before...! Anderson is absolutely brilliant!! The tension, the drama...I swear my heart stopped a few times! It's Robinson Crusoe meets World War II---a make-do attitude, consorting with the natives, and using the "high" tech of the ships, planes, and weaponry of earthside's World War II. Right along with the sailing ships already in existence in this alternate world.

I've been reading this excellent sf/alt-history series since book one and have yet to be disappointed. Anderson adds another winner to this series in "Iron Gray Sea." I believe his world-building is top notch and he populates the world with complex characters, but not overly so; just enough to keep the reader interested in the events taking place.

Book 7 in the Destroyermen series. The war escalates on each front. In the West, the Grik have developed new technologies to match the Alliance, unknown to them. In the East, the Dominion are pushed back, but treachery leads to catastrophic results. Meanwhile, a new enemy emerges as news of a Japanese destroyer crossing into the alternative world forces the crew of Walker to face a modern enemy. This book continues the alternative world adventure of the crew of Walker and their Allies, and doesn...more

7 books in, and the series continues to grow deeper and more complex. I'm starting to think it will never end! (This is a good thing, of course, but it's a little hard on poor Walker. How much of a beating can one ship take?)
None of the sides are as simple and clear cut as they started out.
This book is a drawn a little thin from all the different locations and people it has to keep track of, but it still moves forward with plenty of hair-raising battles. The series is steaming ahead at full spee...more

This is the kind of action packed, nuts and bolts Science Fiction I love the most. It's the kind of slam bang action that keeps you awake reading long after your bedtime. It has kept me with my nose to the page for seven books now, and they keep adding new twists to the story to pique my interest. Thus far we have encountered superstorms that sweep vessels from the seas off Indonesia into another world filled with terrifying beasts and other intelligent races. Our viewpoint characters are the U....more
Taylor Anderson has done a superb job in creating this series of books that blends history with fantasy. This book is the latest in the series and is just as great as the previous ones. We find out what has been happening to characters we haven't heard from in a while, their is almost non-stop action, and continues to blend historical and geographical references into the series.
A great read if you love World War II history and love fantasy.

The 7th book in a military parallel universe series. Filled with wondrous characters, exciting battle scenes and fantastic world building.
During our WWII several American and Japanese war ships slip through a veil and enter a parallel universe. There they continue their war with new allies. The Japanese with the evil horrible canabalistic Gril and the Americans with the hard pressed monkey cat Lemurians. Excellent and so thrilling I wish the next book were already available.
If you've been reading this series since the beginning than you know exactly what to expect. All of your original heroes are back. The bad guys are still evil, although they are humanized. The plot is expanded upon and the good guys don't ALWAYS win. Granted heroes are heroes, but it's a fantasy series not real life. An excellent addition to an excellent series.
I really, really enjoyed the action in this book. I would give it 4.5 stars if I could do so. The Alliance formed between humans and lemurians grows closer all the time, even while adding new elements and members. Politics appears to be making a stronger impact, so some internal strife may ensue.
My only major critique of the last book was the introduction of new individuals and peoples that complicate the story. That has continued into this book, and we've gotten another hint of yet another grou...more

Absolutely brilliant book...a lot of things get wrapped up in this one but opens up a whole new slew of plot lines and avenues of exploration; Taylor Anderson has gotten himself to the point that no matter which way he goes with this story theres nothing he can do wrong.
I can't wait for the next one.

Iron Gray Sea is the seventh chapter in the Destroyermen series by Taylor Anderson. I really liked the book as his naval technical knowledge really shines and the world and characters he developed is pretty awesome as well.
Not really sure what to think of the end, though. I don't know how many books that are going to be in Destroyermen but this certainly won't be the last. I'd imagine he can get at least two more but I hope he doesn't take too long to resolve the storyline.

I loved this installment of the series and again was amazed at the extent of the story and the expansion into new areas of story telling. The character development continues and the pace never stops. Thanks for a great book and I look forward to the next installment.
The wait is always the hardest part of the journey from book to book I think. Can't wait to see where the new plot lines lead to.

I did not enjoy this seventh in the series as I had the previous ones. I thought the author had become predictable. I will continue to read the series because the characters are well rounded and stable in actions - meaning they don't step out of character and do something that, had they been a real person, they would never had done.
