Leadership Guliani
Know the basics of how stuff works, just don't get mired in the details:
Knowing the small details of a large system leaves a leader open to charges of micromanaging. But understanding how something works is not only a leader's responsibility; it also makes him or her better able to let people do their jobs. I was surprised that this book talked more about his management style running New York City and not about conservative politics and principles. He espouses basic principles about leadership that would be useful running any large entity, His use of metrics to gauge the success or failure of a program could be applied to anywhere outside of government. Do not expect much about the personal life known to hit the back pages of the New York Post. This is not a tell all biography. Overall, it is an ea...more

The book itself is less about Rudy Giuliani or September 11th and more your basic “how to get ahead” book. While the basic morals were often trite and over done; I thought the examples about the behind the scenes work that took place to clean up New York was fascinating.
The book is organized in chapters each of which discusses one moral or principle that Rudy believes makes a good leader. The chapter then lists examples of situations where this principle held true. I would have rather ...more

I really need to read some critiqe of Rudy after reading this book. I'm sure someone has valid reasons he ought not be the next president. I saw an anti-Rudy article in The Rolling Stone but did't get a chance to read it, and I started to read one in Harper's today but did'nt want to pay 7 bucks to buy it and had to leave to go see a movie-- gotta prioritize right? Patriotic duty to be informed is highly overrated. Over all it was an informative and kinda entertaining book.

I am a junkie for leadership books and this was among the best I've ever read!! This book made me a believer and I am now an active supporter of the Rudy Giuliani presidential campaign! He is an amazingly articulate writer with a strong sense of self awareness and a keen sense of what the nation needs among its leaders. I was highly impressed and would recommend this to anyone with an interest in contemporary history, leadership, politics, etc.

Interesting read. Insightful book that helps to outline some of the author's philosophies concerning politics and leadership. Some remarkable things occurred in NYC during his term as mayor there. 911 and Guilliani's role in assisting the city through that crisis receive a lot of press, it was interesting to learn what else occurred in the city as a result of his leadership.

I listened to this one on tape (okay, MP3, I guess) and thought it was interesting. It sounds like he did a lot of good for New York. But, if you've read Freakanomics, you know that a lot of the crime rate drops could very well have been attributed to other things. It was interesting to learn what he was doing during Sept. 11th though. Good read, for sure!

While the book is interesting, perhaps a better title would have been in order. Giuliani details his public service, primarily as mayor of New York. It doesn't focus too much on the 9/11 attacks but certainly does give the mayor's account of that time. The leadership lessons that Rudy wants to convey are lost at times in the action line of a his life.

This book works well in the workplace, for church or community leaders, for parents. It's a fascinating look at how Guilliani transformed NYC from frighteningly gritty to Disneyworld. He recounts his actions on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001 (fascinating as well), and as his musings on leadership as learned through hands-on experience.

I received an autographed copy as a gift. SO I felt like reading it was something I HAD to do, but it wasn't bad. A rather good insight into the mind of a powerful man by the man himself. Bring something else to do or eat if you plan on taking this to the park to read. You might fall asleep at certain parts. Is that a spoiler? ;)

I learned so much from this book. This man is a true hero in the ancient Greek tradition. He is a leader with great ideas, strong practicality, and a flawed personal life. Even with all his personal faults I would not hesitate to follow him. I hope he becomes the next President of the United States and this book will tell you why.

I'm a Rudy fan and a huge leadership person- so I really liked this book. It does become repetitive at times, so prepare yourself. I don't think this book really introduces any new leadership ideas and definitely isn't rocket science, but it's nice to have things you know are true reinforced in such a positive way.

Great story of a tough leader in the midst of the catastrophe of NYC. Recommended to Indonesian who thirst a figure of strong, accountable leader. This true story should amaze us how this gentleman played his role in 8 years to reduce the criminal 67%. Salute to Rudi!

I know, I know, Rudy is a controversial figure. I get it. However, I watched a man change a city and make it safer. Leaders interest me. All have their own style. Rudy's should be noted. Like it or not, he has made an impact on history. Read the book.

I decided to read this book because he is running for president. I really enjoyed this book because first, I was in the military and flying over New York 2 days after 9/11 and second, I was interested to see his views and advice on leadership. Very good read.

This came out a while after 9/11. I was impressed with what I saw in the coverage of the events of 9/11 and wanted to learn more about the author. Good, well-layed out book. A little outside the box for me, but I'm glad I read it.

Really liked it. Learned a lot about him, what it takes to be a mayor (of NY of all places), and Sept 11th all in one book. I felt more educated on a lot of issues after reading it. A few swear words when quoting people.

Great book -- full of little take-aways easily applicable to people in all positions, titles and jobs. It gives a detailed account of 9-11 (of course) but contains much more also.

A gift from my mom who is only republican because of Ronald Reagan, but really doesn't even understand politics. Interesting to see 9/11 from the point of view of those in charge.

I couldn't put the book down. I have never read a more captivating and honest book on leadership. Each chapter discusses principles that we should all use in our everyday lifes.
