I would give this a 3.5 if half-stars were an option. I found the story engaging enough to keep me hooked to the end, but as Tomerlin shifted between his characters some of them were prone to psychoanalyzing themselves nearly to death, not to mention filling in backstory on characters that seemed inconsequential (to me) in moving the story along.

Sex was not explicitly described, the implications were more than sufficient, but don't let that throw you - this was not a romance novel. No pirate sto...more

This book surprised me. It starts out like many somewhat cliched pirate romance stories do - a young woman is kidnapped by pirates and held against her will on their ship until she accepts her new life. But after that beginning it transforms into something quite different...

The chapters are told from the perspectives of different characters, of which there are five:

Katherine - the captured young woman, formerly the wife of a merchant captain.

Griffith - an old pirate captain, dreaming of a quiet...more

A few years back, I read a book about pirates and was hooked. I enjoy a good pirate tale. This book was a free Kindle book from Amazon. I jumped on it and between historical and political books, started to read it.

I truly enjoyed this book. It had all the makings of a good novel; adventure, sex, murder, pirates, treasure & love. The story take place when pirates ruled the seven seas. Captain Jonathan Griffith of the "Harbinger" ship and his crew seize the cargo of the "Lady Katherine" inclu...more

No this is not a bodice buster! I got it for free on my Kindle and, since for whatever reason I cannot seem to concentrate on anything "substantial", I figured I'd give it a whirl. According to other reviews, it's not half bad. We'll see.

Ok, I finished this up last night. It was actually pretty decent. Yes, there was some sex (and descriptors like "manhood" and "cunnie")which some may get into more than others (frankly, I can do without it but I've been there done that).

Anyway, the tale did not...more

Though a bit bloody at times, I can't help but love this book. Kates ability to adapt and evolve is a fantastic surprise. I could see her with a future as pirate captain!

You know when a book is simply incredible when you’re thinking about it constantly. This book was absolutely amazing and my mind was on nothing else. It tells the tale of a woman whose unfortunate circumstances cause her to end up on a ship full of pirates. Tomerlin has unflinchingly written this novel with an interesting and attention-grabbing plot. It contains some scenes that are somewhat gruesome but they simply add to the irresistibility of turning the pages. The main character is extremely...more

Me thinks this book kind of sucked. Har.

So yeah, I didn’t really care for this one. The writing wasn’t bad or anything like that, and the plot was mildly interesting, but I guess the biggest problem for me was that I really couldn’t give two shits about any of these characters. Not even one. And since I didn’t care about them, I couldn’t care less about all the dramatic things that happened to them and so the big climax at the end didn’t have much impact on me. It sucks because I was a little to...more

I picked this book up thinking it was a romance. Nothing could have been further from the truth!! While it starts out as a typical pirate romance,it changes course about mid way through the book. I began to have a love hate relationship with the central male character. I really wanted to like him but i just couldn't. I'm interested to see where the next book goes.
I really liked the story line. The gore was a little much for me but not off based for true pirate stories. My only negative comment...more

Like others, I'd give this 3.5 stars if I could. It's a well-written pirate adventure, wtihout the romance of either the swashbuckler or the bodice-ripper genres -- and that's it's primary strength. It's a solid novel about the less-than-romantic life of pirates in the last years of the Golden Age, and about a young woman who both suffers and adapts to being kidnapped after her husband is murdered.

The story gets rough sometimes. These are violent, not-always-sane people, and there is a lot of v...more

First book review for me, figured my amateur words would be better then just the stars. Also, my grammar and spelling are weak, so ignore this review if that bothers you.
Most books I enjoy I read straight through with few breaks. This one took me days to get through. This is not a Pirate romance, so know that going in, if that was you expectation. It is also very graphic in regards to maiming and killing. Anyway, not a bad book, but I liken it to standing on an small island, where you want to ge...more

A really great pirate story. Pirates attack a ship, the pirate Captain kills the attacked ships Captain and takes his wife prisoner. She tries to kill him with a cutlass, bites off his ear and so she's tied to the mast as punishment for 5 days. That was only 25% in!!! I won't tell you any more as it would ruin the surprises you'll find. There is a lot of action in this book, it's jam packed to say the least all the way to the end where it has the perfect opening to the second book (wish it were...more

Quite the rousing and bloodthirsty pirate tale! This is not your "Pirates of the Caribbean," for sure. The story contains some pretty raw violence, but was probably close to true for the times. I liked the technique of dedicating each chapter to the perspective of one of the characters. I think it really helped to reveal their personalities and motivations. I wasn't crazy about the open-ended denouement, but I guess it leads into the next book. I like the satisfaction of completion and do not li...more

Wow! Action and adventure of the high seas at it's best! Tomerlin does an excellent job of drawing the reader into the story and characters with descriptive prose and non-stop action. The only qualm I had with this book was that due to Tomerlin's adept skill at writing with vivid descriptiveness, I felt there were too many gory and violent scenes. Otherwise, it was an outstanding, engaging and realistic pirate story.

The cover grabbed me, and I'm glad it did. This is gritty, bloody, realistic pirate fiction. Katherine Lindsay is a very memorable character who evolves throughout the story. Entertaining combination of Robert E. Howard pulp and George R.R. Martin's deep characterizations. It doesn't wear out its welcome, and leaves you craving a sequel.

Ahoy mates! Your in for a journey if you read this book! LOL I loved it! It had everything a good pirate tale should have: wicked pirates, gory deaths, hostages, treasures (booty), lust, passion, sex, battles & an awesome storyline! It was a very cool read from beginning to end. I was actually sad that my journey ended so soon.

This book was gory, raw and gripping with action. Reminds me of the brutal stories told in the Game of Thrones series. Very well told and best to keep in mind when reading it that these are pirates and there are no happy endings. Otherwise you will be thoroughly disappointed.

Once I got through the first half, which takes a lot of time setting up the characters, I couldn't put this down. The ending threw me for a loop. I don't usually talk to books, but I caught myself yelling, "Don't do it!" at the heroine. Looking forward to the next one.

Katherine reminded me sometimes of Elizabeth Swan from Pirates of the Caribbean. I loved her fiery attitude and her transformation throughout the book. I was a little disappointed in the ending, but excited to continue on in the series to Devil's Tide!

Indeed a pirate story.... not one that I would recommend. Fell flat with several of the characters, had romance/sex and no appeal and it had historical information. It was lacking umpffff in all directions. Thanks goodness it was a freebie on my kindle

This is the second book, i read the 1st one, and then right away got the 2nd one.. now have to wait for the 3rd to be released! Action/adventure, a little romance, but not the focus of the story. More about a sheltered girl becoming a pirate. :)

Kept me enthralled, although this book is very graphic with tons of gore. This is not a romance book. It's pretty hard core and I want to find out what happens to the heroine in the next book, but not sure I want to invest the time.
Meg
I like pirate stories, and this didn't disappoint. It was a little too graphic with blood and guts for my taste, but it wasn't a deal breaker. Despite the female protagonist, this is not a romance. These pirates are not your handsome, misunderstood rogues; they're for-reals pirates. Overall, well-written and it kept me reading, but something was missing for me. I didn't quite connect with the story or characters as much as I would have liked, but I can't quite pinpoint why. I'm undecided at the...more

It was my favorite book but it did keep my attention. And I may consider reading the next book in the series. However, I found numerous typos so they didn't do a good job editing the story.
Kirsten Lenius
Not your formulaic pirate romance book, this is probobly closer to a pirate's life at sea, filled with brutality, spilled guts and sociopaths. While not my favorite book ever, it was a good read.
Kitty
I loved the book, until the ending. I wasn't quite sure if i liked the ending at all just didn't end the way i felt it should have. But i guess i shouldn't have guess it would have ended nicely with a male author. never mind; i did enjoy most of the novel.
Jessica Bakaitis
this was a hard book for me to read. it intrigued me but the more i read the more i was just ready to have it end. i dont think i will continue this series. livingston was definitely the one to hate and was glad when katherine got her revenge. this is just not a story for me.
Shelly
I got this for free on my kindle. I thought this was a little less than a 3 star read. The passivity of the writing style greatly affected the story's impact.
