This footnote in the annals of Merchanter/Union space describes the encounter of a small Family ship with an ancient alien vessel. The human crew become involved unwittingly in an internal power struggle between the alien crew. Then some of the humans find that they are not what they were. This is a remarkable study of the interaction of human psychology with machine psych...more

Voyager in Night is a wonderfully confusing and wholly uncompromising story that plunges cold, sharp-fingered hands into the sensitive meat surrounding our concept of self and humanity. Three spacers, temporarily employed as mining scouts but possessed of larger dreams, encounter and are then stolen by an unknown (and, possibly, unknowable) alien entity and then examined, murdered, and recreated as copy/pastes of themselves inside the haunted spiderweb hallways of a not-so-empty ship. These aspe...more

A strong psychological SF novel, has contrast between human and alien thinking and culture as well as strange tech and life-forms. The novel hits many/most of Cherryh's writing's strengths.

1) The reader gets a taste of her gritty vision of space travel and lifestyle with the connection to the Union-Alliance cycle of stories. Her novels have a depth of background, and I feel that I am seeing the surface of something deeper.

2) I noticed some similarities between (not a copy of) the alien here an...more

Trippy book, but in an awesome sci fi way. An unknown alien entity kidnaps three human beings and makes multiple copies of them, merging these copies with other kidnapped aliens in an attempt to defeat an evil copy of itself. I don't think I've ever read another book where the aliens are more alien. It can be a little tough to get into, but I loved it.

A short and somewhat uncomfortable story to read but one of the most thought-provoking I've ever read.

Cherryh has an ability I greatly admire, to write poetically while never losing sight of the hard-SF underpinnings of her stories.

Ever since I first read it, I've wondered what choice I would make, at the end, If I were Paul. I still don't know!

Another curious and enjoyable stand-alone SF novel.

This one read like the missing link between Peter Watts' Blindsight and Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House. A trio of spacers get hauled aboard an alien craft where they encounter the less than sane remains of an alien AI.

another reread; hard to know how to rate this one. I think I understand what's going on better than when I originally read it, but hard to say I actually liked it - but that doesn't mean I disliked it! Very strange, very 'other' - in some ways, very sad.

An interesting literary experiment that is more intriguing than enjoyable.

This just confused the hell out of me. I hate sci fi that makes me feel stupid.

The writing style was very much C.J. Cherryh. The story line, while set in her Merchanter universe, was more philosophical and less action-packed than her other novels.

A fascinating look at the nature of consciousness and personality, and how a trio of people relate to each other. Confusing to read at times, because of some of the naming conventions, but was overall a good read.

Very cool. One of the first explorations of virtual reality I came across. A misfit bunch of characters trapped in a starship careering out of control. Restored backups and corrupted files... and that means YOU!

Too much whining and self loathing; how many times can a single character despair?

Skip it. Not one of her best.
