Voyager in Night is a wonderfully confusing and wholly uncompromising story that plunges cold, sharp-fingered hands into the sensitive meat surrounding our concept of self and humanity. Three spacers, temporarily employed as mining scouts but possessed of larger dreams, encounter and are then stolen by an unknown (and, possibly, unknowable) alien entity and then examined, murdered, and recreated as copy/pastes of themselves inside the haunted spiderweb hallways of a not-so-empty ship. These aspe...more
A strong psychological SF novel, has contrast between human and alien thinking and culture as well as strange tech and life-forms. The novel hits many/most of Cherryh's writing's strengths.
1) The reader gets a taste of her gritty vision of space travel and lifestyle with the connection to the Union-Alliance cycle of stories. Her novels have a depth of background, and I feel that I am seeing the surface of something deeper.

Trippy book, but in an awesome sci fi way. An unknown alien entity kidnaps three human beings and makes multiple copies of them, merging these copies with other kidnapped aliens in an attempt to defeat an evil copy of itself. I don't think I've ever read another book where the aliens are more alien. It can be a little tough to get into, but I loved it.

A short and somewhat uncomfortable story to read but one of the most thought-provoking I've ever read.
Cherryh has an ability I greatly admire, to write poetically while never losing sight of the hard-SF underpinnings of her stories.
Ever since I first read it, I've wondered what choice I would make, at the end, If I were Paul. I still don't know!

A fascinating look at the nature of consciousness and personality, and how a trio of people relate to each other. Confusing to read at times, because of some of the naming conventions, but was overall a good read.
