This is the story of how two ordinary every-day accountants, a father and son team, overcame the odds to climb one of the world’s highest mountains and bring much-needed funds to one of the poorest parts of the world. It is an inspiring account, written primarily by Barry Finlay, who embarked on this challenging escapade at the tender age of 60, and supplemented with dialogue by his son, Chris.

The fact that neither is an accomplished writer takes nothing away from the strength of their story. I...more

A Five Star Amazing Read

A father and son team takes on a challenging and adventurous journey that others might only dream of undertaking. The story is well written and comes from the heart in an honest and sometimes humorous way.
Right from the very beginning it is an engaging and fascinating story. About 40,0000 people attempt to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro each year and to be expected not all of the climbers make it. I love the fact that the author has such a generous heart. He and his son...more

I loved this meticulous chronicle of one man’s ascent (together with his son and another individual fulfilling a lifelong aspiration), to the highest mountain in Africa ~ at once so inspirational and courageous, so human and humane, and so deeply personal that the reader feels they are climbing right along with this small and h...more

A seemingly insurmountable climb overcome through a clear mindset of 'one step at a time' and 'one breath at a time.' The chapters towards the end are the most memorable and inspiring for me. Engaging, with a good sense of humour, and pure strength of character.

I am glad that the Finlays didn't just climb Kili and vacate but instead also worked to improve access to clean water and education in Tanzania, but worthy efforts do not make a good book. What a disjointed pile of words.
