Making a Scene: Crafting a Powerful Story One Scene at a Time
by
Jordan E. Rosenfeld (Goodreads Author)
Scenes are useful fictional units, and if a single unit falters, then an entire novel or short story can be weakened. This title explains the fundamentals of strong scene construction and how other useful fiction-writing techniques, such as character development, description, and transitions must function within the framework of individual scenes.

I consider myself a pretty intermediate novelist, at the point where I write scenes and I know why they work or don't work instinctively.
But it's like playing an instrument or typing on a keyboard. Someone asks you "How did you write that scene?" The moment you crack down and concentrate on what you're doing you draw a blank. There's a shirt circuiting that happens in the brain and you forget everything you know. Where's that key again?

This book is worth buying. It goes into far greater depth about the different types of scenes. All I hear generally is there are two types of scenes, contemplative: where the character thinks about what they are going to do next, or action: where the character is doing something. This always struck me as 'simplistic' and I was right.
There are some good parts about character.
Also, one of the best looking covers I've ever seen!

This is the absolute best book I've ever read about the craft of writing. Jordon breaks down the details of great scenes and explains how to create them, step by step. I recommend this book for all writers, whether they've been stories for years, or are just beginning. Everyone will find helpful information and explanations about craft, and will discover a new way to think about creating scenes and how to make the ones you write even better.

Rosenfeld breaks the scene down into all of its different elements, looks at each one and how it flavours a scene, and provides pointers on how a writer can make her scenes work harder and read better.
Having all this information in one place is fantastic and I know this will be a book I'll keep near at hand so that I can dip into it every so often to make sure my scene-writing is as good as it can be.
