Scenes are useful fictional units, and if a single unit falters, then an entire novel or short story can be weakened. This title explains the fundamentals of strong scene construction and how other useful fiction-writing techniques, such as character development, description, and transitions must function within the framework of individual scenes.

I am reading this very slowly, but I am almost through. I like taking it in step by step as I write.
I'll cheat and say I have finished. Excellent, practical book for all writers. Very well done!

I would recommend going through it slowly, step by step.

I consider myself a pretty intermediate novelist, at the point where I write scenes and I know why they work or don't work instinctively.

But it's like playing an instrument or typing on a keyboard. Someone asks you "How did you write that scene?" The moment you crack down and concentrate on what you're doing you draw a blank. There's a shirt circuiting that happens in the brain and you forget everything you know. Where's that key again?

What this book has done for me is teaching me how to ident...more

I wrote this book. I really do think you'll take up your level of the craft if you read it :)

This book is worth buying. It goes into far greater depth about the different types of scenes. All I hear generally is there are two types of scenes, contemplative: where the character thinks about what they are going to do next, or action: where the character is doing something. This always struck me as 'simplistic' and I was right.

There are some good parts about character.

Also, one of the best looking covers I've ever seen!

This book is full of wonderful information. I refer to it all the time and am so glad I came across this excellent writing resource. Jordan's classes are great too, if you get the chance to take one, I recommend it.

Writers, this is a very helpful book. It's shaping my new manuscript at the moment, with plenty of strong reminders about how to construct an engaging scene. Jordan Rosenfeld has set things out for us in a readable, easy to follow format.

The best thing since sliced bread. Or... no, better! The best thing since... extra sharp cheddar cheese! Or nachos! Gelatto!

(dear god, this is why I'm getting so fat...)

Great reference book. Found it a little tedious to get through in one reading though.

This is the absolute best book I've ever read about the craft of writing. Jordon breaks down the details of great scenes and explains how to create them, step by step. I recommend this book for all writers, whether they've been stories for years, or are just beginning. Everyone will find helpful information and explanations about craft, and will discover a new way to think about creating scenes and how to make the ones you write even better.

Go buy this book now!

Rosenfeld breaks the scene down into all of its different elements, looks at each one and how it flavours a scene, and provides pointers on how a writer can make her scenes work harder and read better.

Having all this information in one place is fantastic and I know this will be a book I'll keep near at hand so that I can dip into it every so often to make sure my scene-writing is as good as it can be.

You know, it's sort of stupid, but I never thought about how to craft scenes... Just plot, characters, and the like.

This book contains a sizable amount of useful information, although it is somewhat dully conveyed. You should also know that Rosenfeld is horrible with spoilers. After reading some of her first few examples, I skipped over anything taken from books I intended to read.

A bit long in discussion of different books that were used for illustration of a scene's purpose, but aside from that this book will stay on my reference shelf. Her explanation of the types of scenes was really helpful.
Laura
Excellent book for helping novice authors with the art of crafting a good scene. Very informative and easy to read and understand.
Anna Serra i Vidal
Read it once, but I know it will be a recurrent reread. I've just read. Now I'll have to use it and write better scenes :)
Sudama Chandra
A useful encyclopaedia of Scene creating. The resources, techniques and other examples are excellent. Recommended.
Donette
This gave me a better understanding of constructing a scene and got me excited about writing again.

Useful. I'll probably return and dip into it to read particular chapters for reference later.

Very good job of covering the intricacies of developing scenes in fiction writing.
