Solid 4 1/2 stars. Wow, such a intense heartbreaker with so many wonderful characters. I was on the edge of my seat reading this one. I felt the themes were very difficult. Jack's wife is in a coma after a horrible accident, Jack's perfect life and family is ripped apart. He is the perfect husband and takes care of her, refuses to give up on her. You get glimpses back into their young love story and feel their connection, as well as, see their beautiful family life. A year later Jack decides he...more
A very good story. I was a bit scared at the beginning because of some not so good reviews here on GR but I got my courage and read it anyway, and I'm very glad I did it!
The story is a bit hard, Jack has everything, a wonderful wife, a good marriage and three wonderful girls, when his wife falls in a come after a car accident (it seems more a suicide than an accident).
After one year attending a sleeping wife he decides to come back to life for his daughters. In the end he will fall in love with...more

Well let me start by stating this one will really make you think. Jack and Clare Harrington are happily married with three beautiful daughters Jill, Kate and Maggie. But in one afternoon their entire world changes. Clare is hit by a car and she's in a coma. As I read this story I asked myself what would I do in this situation. Jack cuts himself off from everyone for a full year sitting by his wife side. Even though physically Clare was there but her life had stopped. What would you do in this si...more
Let me start by saying that I absolutely love Marie Force's books and I am a HUGE fan of her McCarthy's of Gansett Island Series. This book had a very interesting story and one that makes you question what you would do in a situation where you are happily married with a loving family and all of a sudden your spouse falls into a coma and you accidently find love in someone else while your spouse lays lifeless on a hospital bed. (Not exactly the kind of stuff most folks consider very often). This...more
I liked this book quite a bit despite some the moments when I wanted smack some of the characters upside the head. Hard.
So here's the thing, Jack's wife of 20 years, Clare, gets hit by a car and goes into a coma. Everybody except Jack are basically saying "she's had it." After about year and a half, where Jack doesn't give up on his comatose wife, sits by her side everyday (luckily he's super rich so he doesn't have to work or anything) his family basically tells him he needs to start living aga...more

I cannot even say how much I loved this book! This book reminded me that there are certain things I can expect from a Marie Force book: 1 - I am going to SWOON for the leading man (no one writes a leading man like Marie!), 2 - A well told story that is going to go straight to my heart, 3 - the tears I shed or sadness I feel is the result of characters and words that really touched me, not because of over the top angst intended to rip my heart out, 4 - a few more songs I just HAVE to add to my iP...more
Treading Water by Marie Force is an incredible book. Jack, the main character, is put into an impossible situation where his wife is comatose and was told by doctors not to expect recovery, to the point that they wanted to consider ending her life. Jack refused but after over a year, had to start to move on with his own life despite his own reluctance.

jack is such an ass**** if all heros were like jack i would quit reading romance novels, andi for a woman who had a failed marriage to go and have an affair with a married man(yes it was an affair clare was still alive even though she was in a coma)jack and andi move in the same bed that he used to share with clare, even though the are other bedrooms in the house.when poor selfless clare told jack to end their marriage never mind that poor clare was sick jack had to rush and marry andi.i hate a bo...more
I'm still surprised at how much I enjoyed Treading Water. I'm not usually one who enjoys books with odd spousal entanglements. (see my review of The Replacement Wife) I was hesitant at first to want to read a story about a man who falls in love with another woman while his wife is in a coma. However, there is something about Jack and his feelings for Andie that are realistic and understanding.
Life has dealt Jack and horrible card and there is no right or wrong way to proceed on from it. I truly...more

FAST-PACED-TEAR-JERKER! I have come to love these, because the gut-wrenching-tear-my-heart-out scenes only last long enough for me to get glassy eyed but never really produce tears. Sometimes I read tear jerkers and have to have a box of Kleenex beside me while I hiccup, sniff, blot tears and finally have to put the book down. And while I LOVE a good emotional read, sometimes I put off books because I've heard they are so sad. This one most definitely has gut-wrenching-tear-my-heart-out scenes b...more
It is no secret, I am a huge fan of Marie Force, but Treading Water is my most favorite book that she has written and in the top 5 of my all time favorite book ever. Marie takes you for a ride in Treading Water, a ride with lots of bumps and several epic turns of events that impact a family to its core. I cried in several places during this book and thought several times, how is Jack going to actually get his HEA, I laughed, especially at some of the banter with the kids. And I was angry, very a...more
It took me a while to come around and read this book. I have a problem with people being unfaithful to their marriage partners and for this reason I hesitated to read this book even though I am a huge fan of Marie Force. I am glad I came to my senses and read it. It was a beautiful, heart felt story about real people you couldn't help but like. The issues raised were difficult and I guess what allowed me to accept Jack and Andie's relationship was their pain and hesitation about entering a relat...more
Marie Force has changed my view of contemporary romance. Another great bk, 4.5 stars. Even with all the twists and turns this story takes, I kind of suspected from the beginning what might happen to change things but not how it would all play out. Wonderful characters too. Jack, his family and Andi have so much to deal with mentally and emotionally. Couldn't put this bk down until I finished and knew what would happen for Jack and Andi. Adored the side story with Jamie and Frannie too. Wonderful...more
I have read all the books thus far in Marie Force's The McCarthys of Gansett Island series which I am totally hooked on. I see this 1st book in Treading Water very similar in the fact that each book will intertwine the characters into each other, which I love.
This first book is based on Jack's world, his 3 little girls, his wife Clare, sister Fran, best friend Jaime, & Andi's world with her deaf son.

This was a tough book for me to read. Even though ti was a beautiful heart felt story with characters I couldn't help but like, it was hard for me to get past the fact that Jack was moving into a relationship with Andie while his wife was in a coma. I think the only reason I was able to continue reading and enjoy the story was due to the hesitation on both Andie and Jack to enter into the relationship. It helped even more once their relationship started to progress that Jack still thought of his...more
This was such an amazing story! When I first heard of it I was hesitant to read it. I knew that there were going to be some intense and emotional parts in this book and wasn't sure if I could handle it. I finally talked myself into reading it. I knew that I was going to love it at the end because Marie Force wrote it. I seriously love all of her work. I am so incredibly happy that I read this book. I loved Andi, she was a great character. I loved her son, Eric, even more. There were just so many...more
Wow! First of all I love all of Marie Force's books. I had been putting this series off for personal reasons as a simliar accident happened in my family. I commend the story that Marie told. You get wrapped up in the story. You feel the pull of Jack's stuggle which was heartbreaking. The story is gripping. I wish Andi had more of a stuggle, she was just so agreeable, which made her perfect for him, but not as realistic as I would have hoped. All in all, I really did love this story and am on boo...more

I kept going back to the reviews at Goodreads to make sure the readers and I were actually reading the same book. I read a lot of them and wondered: ARE we reading the same book? What am I missing? With the exception of a review by someone I'm pretty sure didn't actually read the book, everyone loved it and cried buckets.

I do not even know were to begin with this review. This book is just down right wonderful. The story just captured me from the beginning. Jack had it all. Wonderful family and a successful business and in the blink of an eye his whole world changed. Jack's wife Clare was hit by a car and is left in a coma. Jack has been told there is no hope of recovery for Clare. After sitting by her bedside everyday for a year, Jack is now ready to begin to put his life...more

Today I just found myself telling a friend about this book and how I was so dazed and blown away by it. Most reads in contemporary and historical (even in most paranormal) romance genre tend to be shallow. Probably because it's not easy to write about taboo topics and make the readers comprehend things in exactly the way an author wants or needs to. So every time I find a good read, one which makes me re-think about every value that has ever been thought to me, one that makes me see things -I wa...more

First things first, I want to take a minute to Congratulate Marie Force on Finally being able to publish this Trilogy. If you have visited Marie's Website, you would have read all about the Treading Water Trilogy and how they have been put on the back burner for long enough, and let me just say how excited I am to be able to get my hands on the first two books!

Hilariously bad! I could make a list of all the things going on in this book, but I don’t feel like revisiting them. I think cheesy would be a great way to describe it, the writing, the characters, the story, everything was cheesy. And the ending! Oh my, the ending. I think about it and I want to simultaneously laugh and cry. If you’re in the mood for ridiculous, over the top and awful, go for it.
I used to like her books, but if this is what she's self-publishing, I'm not reading her again.

I kept putting this book off until I was either completely eager to read or in the right frame of mind because of the emotions I knew it would bring. Due to a little bit of both I finally picked it up. The book started a little slow, or maybe it was me waiting for tragedy to strike. After a little while it got so good it was very difficult putting it down. I loved the characters, I felt for them and with them. A complete experience. I'm glad I have the next lined up because I want more.
I don't read tons of "romance" novels but I have enjoyed a few by is author who is one of my mom's favorites. I wanted to like this book and I did come to care for the characters but I will just say I do not like Jack. And I had way more of an ethical dilemma reading the storyline than I probably should have. SPOILER sort of....in the end I wished Jack would have gotten the boot by Clare and Andi. They are too good for him! (sorry mom!).
This was a tough book to read, so many heartaches and love affairs. I didn't want to like this book, but the further I got into it, the more I had to finish it. The many sex scenes were a distraction, I had to skip ahead. The story had a sort of good ending, nice to know that there are couple of other books that pick up where this one left off. I would have given it more stars if it were not for the sex scenes and a few bad words.
I read this because my BFF loved this author and this series. This did not blow off my doors by any means. There is something about the writing style in this one that I had a hard time with and I cannot put a finger on what that is. I do not that the speed at which everything happens in this book kinda makes me crazy but that's not a big deal.
I'm going to read the next book to see what happens to Clare and Kate...

I love love love Marie Force. I think she's terrific. This book is NOT a good example of her writing. Jack was a complete ass. This was just a meh story with a character that I wanted to slap around from beginning to end. I just never connected to it.
That being said, I feel like I need to reiterate my enjoyment of all things Marie Force. Her books generally leave me smiling like a loon.
