I loved this book! I didn't realize it was a short novella, and I wished it would have been longer. I sympathized with the main character Philadelphia (which is a beautiful girl's name!) as her world was centered around abolishing Christianity and assimilating into a no religion, just government world. Her father is called for a science commission on Mars, and Phil was told she would have to stay behind and assimilate or they would kill her. last minute though, she is thrown into the transit, be...more
I traveled to Mars against my will last night. Opened this book and it teleported me straight to base #9.6.11, where I discovered I was but a ghost (not even a hologram), observing as Philli searched out secrets she wasn't supposed to know. Little by little she and I learned more, one piece of the shocking truth at a time. Some of it I saw coming, a lot of things I didn't. The action kept me on my toes, and the slower scenes between Philli and her father tore at my heart.

The short response: I love it!
The long response: From the very first line I was hooked. The story takes place in a futuristic dystopian society on Earth where Christians are looked down upon and kept in disturbing Christian-Camps. The father of our protagonist, Philadelphia, is summoned to Mars to work on a scientific project, but Philadelphia had no idea she was going with him. After hunting for her dead brother’s possessions she stumbles into a hallway that doesn’t exist and learns of a secret...more

I really enjoyed this book which is actually a novella at approximately 35,000 words. It is one of the most intriguing books I've read in a while. I had to set it aside for a couple of days because of my schedule and found I couldn't stop thinking about it. Usually under circumstances like this I would keep reading a book in bits and pieces but with this one I wanted to save it until I could give it my full concentration.

Recommend for: All ages, mild sci-fi lovers, those looking for a short read, those wanting to support homeschool authors.
Can I be honest? I don’t read a lot of Sci-Fi because I don’t like most of it that is out there. I know, this is hard to believe coming from a science fiction writer, but it’s true. Red Rain was a resounding exception.

The future belongs to the United, a worldwide movement to live in peace and community. But some refuse to join: uncompromising, religious fanatics who cling to the beliefs that would keep the world at war. Assimilated or removed, these Unaccepted cannot be allowed to contaminate the peace the United promises and are thus contained.
This future is where Philadelphia must choose to remain uncompromising or give in to what the world is saying. "Take their offer while you still can. Take it and run!"...more

Most science fiction is incoherently written and uncreative, with bad dialogue. It is rare to find a work that taps into the potential of the genre. At 35,000 words, Red Rain packs a lot of excitement for its length. The general audience is teenagers, but the story will hold interest for adults as well.
A teenage girl named Philadelphia, daughter of a Christian scientist, lives under persecution in a futuristic society called the United. When she accompanies her father to a space station on Mars,...more

Yes, I read my own book. Believe it or not, that is an extremely difficult thing to do. I think this is the first time I've read the book in its entirety, straight through, since I published it over a year ago.
I actually enjoyed it. Is that a good sign?
Anyway, I reread it because I'm preparing to write a sequel (and a related short story), and I need to get my character voice back. Come on, self, you can do this again. Just repeat after me: Minimalist. Min-i-mal-ist...
