Dodger is a sweet romance with interesting characters and two heroes who are from the opposite side of the tracks, but they still form a friendship and eventually fall in love. This is the first book I’ve read by Amanda Hash and it definitely won’t be my last. I liked her simplistic storytelling skills and her ability to bring this reader into the unique lives of her characters.

Dodger is a sweet romance with interesting characters and two heroes who are from the opposite side of the tracks, but they still form a friendship and eventually fall in love. This is the first book I’ve read by Amanda Hash and it definitely won’t be my last. I liked her simplistic storytelling skills and her ability to bring this reader into the unique lives of her characters.

Dodger is sixteen and has lived as a squatter with his makeshift family for years. To make ends meet Dodger and his family steal from others, so when one of the family members suggests breaking into a house on the wealthy side of town, he didn’t think they’d have much to lose.

Dodger and his family pick a huge home and break into it. Fascinated with all of the nice and elegant things inside the home, Dodger become a little distracted and stays in the house longer than he had intended to be. When he goes to leave, he is discovered by a young man who his surprisingly nice to him and allows him to leave with his stolen bounty without calling the police. Dodger is shocked by the stranger’s generosity and when he runs into the young man again the next night at a restaurant, he can’t keep his eyes off of him. When the object of his fascination approaches him and tells him his name is Augustine and he wishes to meet Dodger later, Dodger reluctantly immediately believing the worst of the young man.

But, when they meet later, Dodger is stunned by Augustine’s sweetness and his easy-going personality as well as his ability to look past Dodger’s lifestyle choices. Despite himself, soon Dodger starts trusting Augustine and a friendship develops between them and finally when their attraction for each other moves their relationship into the next level, Dodger is thrilled. But he must keep his relationship with Augustine a secret because his makeshift family would never understand why Dodger would want anything to do with someone like Augustine. When Augustine tells Dodger he must leave for college and asks Dodger to choose between the love they have for each other and the only family he’s ever known and cared about, Dodger is faced with a difficult choice.

I really liked this book. I liked the way Dodger and Augustine’s relationship developed and blossomed into a cherished first love. I didn’t care for Dodger’s makeshift family much, but in their defense they have a hard life, so I understood their mistrust and the hold they had on Dodger and his emotions. I appreciated how Augustine really seemed to accept Dodger for who really was, while also wanting more for him. I also liked how Dodger came to see that you can’t always judge people by their cover or where they come from.

I wish the book had been longer. I would have loved to read more about this couple. I would have also liked to gotten to know Augustine better. Even Dodger himself remained a little mysterious to me. But I still liked both heroes and enjoyed the sweet romance they had together. The story itself is very fast paced and it’s a quick and easy read that I really enjoyed. When it came to an end it left me with a smile on my face and a hope that both these two heroes will have an interesting and fun life together.

The main character in the book 'Dodger' by Amanda Hash is a young man named Dodger who reminds me of the Artful Dodger, in Charles Dickens’s novel 'Oliver Twist'. Dodger is also a pickpocket and a thief; he lives with a gang of cast-off children who steal and pool their resources in order to survive. As in 'Oliver Twist', unity within the family is perpetuated by teaching the children that they can only trust their family and that anyone with money is the enemy.
