Ahhh, volume 5. The introduction of my absolute favourite Sailor Moon villain. I think the Black Moon arc is just my favourite overall really (both in manga and the anime).

I could write a really in depth review talking about why I think Black Lady (AKA Wicked Lady for those like me who grew up with the English dub) is THE BEST EVAHHH... Or I could ransack this review with wicked cool (see what i did there?) images of her instead...

I am reviewing all of the Sailor Moon (new English translation) volumes in order, please check out the first 3 for my initial and overall thoughts on the series.

This is my favorite volume so far - the story really develops and we see a lot more action at a less-than-rapid pace, which was the case for the first 4 volumes. I fell in love with Sailor Pluto in this volume (view spoiler)[WHY DID SHE HAVE TO DIE???? (hide spoiler)]. She has so much depth and beauty, and she's a lot more appealing to...more

Really enjoyed this volume. Even though I haven't watched every episode of the anime, I know general story throughout the series. And I love that I still become so intrigued and hooked by the manga, even though I generally know what's going to happen. XD It was a great conclusion to this second arc of the series, and I'm super excited the next volumes get into the "S" arc (one of my favorite arcs because Outer Senshi XD). :D

I have to say, Usagi/Sailor Moon is way more badass in the manga. The a...more

I'm only going to rate this one, because I read the last four volumes so awfully quickly that I couldn't squirrel them away in my way back to Chile and read them at home. These are superb comic books in every sense (and painfully quick to read, even moreso when it's hard for one to get the next volume, let alone the wait for it...) - the plot, the illustrations, the enormous and elaborate world in which this series is contained and that Takeuchi had the genius to bear, the text, and character de...more

Seriously, if this manga were a human being, I'd marry it. (Although some guys over in Japan are marrying their electronic games, so...) There's just so much I love about this release.

First off, the cover and color splash pages are absolutely gorgeous. They're not only eye catching, but they're also playful and fun to look at.

Story-wise, I've really enjoyed this volume. It finishes up the Black Moon arc, leaving the next volume to start an entirely new story arc (Sailor Moon S). For some reaso...more

Unfortunately, this story arc isn't my favorite and while there is some great characterization going on with Pluto and Chibi-usa, the vehicle by which the characterization is presented just doesn't really capture me. Also, the weird way that Chibi-usa sees Endymion and Neo-Queen Serenity as her parents and Tuxedo Mask and Sailor Moon almost as a pair of strangers that she meets and not connected to her in any way is disconcerting. Her desire to monopolize Tuxedo Mask/Mamoru is kind of cute when...more

First things first: I got one of those crappily edited volumes from Kodansha USA with the smudging and heavy printing, but I don't have my receipt so good luck returning it for me. Seriously, where the hell is the quality control that such obvious errors can slip under the radar? JFC.

Complaints about printing aside, this is easily the strongest volume of the series so far as it brings the dramatic conclusion to the 'R' story arc. Yes, a few plot threads are wrapped up almost too nicely at the en...more

This volume wraps up the Black Moon story arc. I enjoyed how Pluto's relationship with Chibi-Usa contributed to restoring herself though (view spoiler)[I was really sad at her death. :( You can't just go around killing off favourites I only met a volume ago. I'm holding out for a resurrection (hide spoiler)]. I thought all the stuff with Mamoru was rather creepy and incestuous. Idk what kind of icecream that dude's holding that brings all the ladies but if I were him this'd be the point I tossed...more

I don't know what I can say about this latest volumen that I haven't covered in my other two reviews. The art is beautiful, the story is still interesting even if it varies from the anime, and the changes themselves are enough to surprise me when they come.

I think the change that surprised me in this volume was the transformation of Sailor Chibi Moon. Of course the reason for her transformation made sense in the story, I just didn't expect it to be that soon in the storyline. Another big surpris...more

First off: My favourite cover of the entire series. <3
Secondly: Black Lady was awesome, (view spoiler)[but man was I glad when Chibi Usa came back!
Thirdly: Black Lady/Endymion WAS FUCKING CREEPY
Fourthly: Usagi kicks more ass than you
Fifthly: Pluto died NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO PLEASE COME BACK TO ME I LOVE YOU
Sixthly: Chibi Usa left and I was just about to feel very sad, when..
Seventhly: SHE CAME BACK OHMYGODS DON'T TOY WITH MY EMOTIONS LIKE THAT (hide spoiler)]

So loads of feelings that are kinda spoi...more

Thie volume took the longest to read and to be honest it really dragged on for me. It seemed to be at a much slower pace than the last 4 volumes.

It was great to see Neo Queen Serenity and Pluto although I thought Pluto would have more of a backstory.
Chibi-Usa really annoyed me to no end here; always trying to get Endiyomon's attention and doesn't see him as her own father. When she grows up and attempts to win his heart by hypnotising him and then proceeds to KISS HER DAD, that really put me of...more

At one point in the book Usagi is wearing a black dress and turns into Sailor Moon, but when she turns back to Usagi, she's wearing her school uniform. He he, Manga mistakes...

We get a few flashbacks of when Pluto was a child, and when Pluto and Chibi Usa (Mini Moon) were together and their friendship. Her powers, in my opinion, have always been pretty cool. I'm still disappointed that the new covers didn't keep Pluto's dark skin as it is shown inside the manga, nope, it looks the same as the ot...more

This volume wraps up the Wiseman villain arc and the setting up of Chibi-Usa as a main cast member and the proper introduction of Sailor Pluto. I liked how the dynamic was about Usagi and Chibi-Usa and how their relationships as they perceive them shape both who they are and the battle with Wiseman. One bit of criticism: because of the focus on Usagi and Chibi-Usa (and laterally, Mamoru), the rest of the Sailor Senshi hardly get a look in. Win some, you lose some.

We finally get more of Pluto, my favorite character in this series! It gets a little complicated, at least for me, with who's where and why certain things are happening, but its not enough to take away from enjoying the series.

Physical quality-wise, there's a strange printing error in my issue where sometimes it seems like certain pages were made with a little too much ink, and the result is bleeding, uneven lettering and sometimes images.

A lot happens in here, and there are quite a few significant differences between the anime and the manga. Like many other American Sailormoon fans, I saw the dubbed anime before I read the manga (which had come to America after the anime), and I definitely enjoy the manga more than the anime, even though the anime really expanded on some of the stuff in the manga. A must for any Sailormoon fan!

I love this series. So rather than gush like I usually do I'll just say that once again this was a great addition to the series and a nice translation of the original version. This volume shows the arrival of Chibi-Usa as a member of the Black Moon, and a new Sailor Guardian. I look forward to the next volume which brings in the Outer Guardians and the awakening of Sailor Saturn.

Another fantastic volume. This volume finishes up the Dark Moon arc and what a wonderful arc it was! Plus the ending gives you an idea of what is to come in the following arc, which is always a nice teaser. Chibi-Usa whom I found extraordinarily annoying in the anime, is not nearly as annoying in the manga. In fact I kind of liked her! Also I should have been mentioning this all along in my other reviews, but I just need to say how much I love the cover art on these additions as well as the colo...more

Okay, confession: this volume totally made me cry.

I love the characterization so much more in the Manga than the anime. I loved Chibiusa and Usagi- especially at the end. And ahhh when Dark Lady turned back into Chibiusa after (view spoiler)[ Pluto's death (hide spoiler)] ....just SO MUCH BETTER.

Now I have to wait for Volume 6 to be published :(

Oh my, it gets better with every volume. But that was the last installment that I had at home. So it'll be probably a while before I can buy the next few volumes and I want to read more of Sailor Moon so badly!!

I even had to cry a bit at the end of Volume 5. Just soo good!
Chris Lemmerman
The conclusion of the Black Moon arc is enjoyable as always, and quite emotional near the end which was unexpected. There's not too much else to say about this, aside from the fact that it would have gotten 5 stars if it didn't feel quite so dragged out - maybe one less Act would have sufficed.
Sara
Vol 5 was a bit harder to get through, since the entire book is one long battle. However, the introduction of Black Lady and copious time warping make up for the sluggishness of the battle. I'm a bit sad to be done with the Black Moon arc.
Ash
I really liked this volume in my opinion it's so far the best volume.
No need to say details about this volume but it continues right after the 4th volume left off and in this volume the second arc ends which is cool. Can't wait for the third :D
Amber
The end of another arc! This volume wraps up the Black Moon arc in thrilling fashion. The end of the volume was great. Obviously good triumphs over evil in the end but its still a right race the while way through. Favorite volume so far!
Elizabeth
Yes, I still grit my teeth over the internal contradictions in the story line, and often I just wish the story had gone in a different direction than it did. But generally, I find this volume to be stronger than most of the ones before it. We're past the formulaic "attack each senshi in turn" chapters, and now with each chapter pushing the story forward, it's a lot more interesting. We see more of the friendship between Chibi-Usa and Sailor Pluto, and get a clearer idea of Chibi-Usa's relationsh...more

At least this time we didn't lose any words to the space between the pages. No translator's notes at the end this time - which is probably just as well, translation notes in previous volumes were mostly useless.
Alison
I'm really enjoying the pace of the manga and the story lines, there isn't so much "filler" which is nice. Plus some of the relationships and story lines are better flushed out compared to the anime.
Ashley
The ending (which is the ending of the R series) totally made me tear up. The story is beautiful, the artwork is GORGEOUS, and Sailor Moon is so strong and powerful and I love her.
scarlettraces
mostly too high-concept for me, and i was a tiny bit squicked by the Dark Lady/Tuxedo Mask implications. i'm quite glad this arc is over, and looking forward to the next volume.
Natasha W
Everything gets so confusing. Queen Serenity is different than Sailormoon, whose different from Endymion, whose different from Tuxedo Mask, who is also the king. OMG!
