Martha knew there was something evil about the house she was moving into. It was so cold...and creepy. And it wasn't just the house that was giving her a weird feeling. Martha was sure someone was following her...watching her every move.

Then the practical jokes began--the scarecrow with the carving knife in its head, the fire. And the phone calls: 'Trick or Treat, Martha.....more

I read this when I was a teenager and just reread it. I didn't remember anything about the story, but I did remember the cover well... used to love that picture of the old house! So spooky-looking! FYI, I pretty much give 5 stars to all my old favorties from back in the day, b/c I remember how much I loved them at the time. Rereading this one today, at 33 years old, it wasn't nearly as exciting or "scary" as it was when I was a teenager, but it was still a fun and good read. Happy Halloween! :D

I wish they still made audiobooks like this! it felt like was listening to a movie. I listened to "Trick or Treat" on YouTube(link here: http://www.youtube.com/user/WrappedIn...) and I was enthralled. I have never listened to an audiobook where nearly 9 different voice actors are included and sound effects such as rain, music, bells, and birds were used. If you love YA Horror, you need to grab a pair of headphones and listen to Trick or Treat now. Richie is a wonderful writer and the actors, tho...more

Trick or Treat was among the many Point Horror books I read in the 90s, between the ages of 12 to 16. In those days, when I wasn't buried in a Stephen King novel, nine times out of ten I was reading L.J. Smith, R.L. Stine, Christopher Pike, Caroline B. Cooney, or Richie Tankersley Cusick. Their novels always thrilled and entertained, and yes, there was a healthy dose of jumps and creepies.

Nowadays, I'd recommend the Point Horror books for younger 12- to 15-year-olds, who want to d...more

Fantastic YA Horror that seriously creeped me out. The atmosphere just sucks you in until you're also jumping at strange noises and shadows just like the MC Martha.

The culprit was predictable and I wish we could have seen more of their true nature when they were revealed but what I saw as a reader was still enough to creep me out. You could pretty much fill in the gaps of what's been going through their head with how they felt and what their motives were.

Martha as a MC can be quite dramatic and...more

Martha and Conor's parents have gotten married and moved the family to the old Bedford house at the outskirts of a small town. Martha isn't happy about this, especially when the old house gives off massively creepy vibes that make her suspect that her stepbrother is even creepier than she thought. She settles in fairly well at school, meeting the dashing Blake and his sister Wynn, but the house turns out to have been the scene of the murder of Elizabeth... who was Wynn's best friend and Blake's...more

Here's the honest truth. My teenage self would have ravenously read this book, only to pick it up again a few weeks later and read it again. Why? Trick or Treat utilizes all of the classic (and slightly cliche) horror aspects that keep you turning pages at a manic pace. Creepy house? Check. Hot guy who takes the girl's attention? Yup! Add in a haunting back story to the house, a well situated honeymoon, and you've got yourself quite the set up for a good horror story. I ate up books like this ba...more

This book was an awesome horror/mystery/thriller. I know it was first published way back in 1989, when the teen horror genre was first getting serious interest on the market, but I just found it out in January of this year when Netgalley put it on their list. I was instantly drawn to it, so naturally I requested it.
I'm happy I did it, because "Trick or Treat" was an adrenaline-rush ride that really got me sweating. Not that I'm much of a horror reader - in fact, after I read the first chapter, I...more

I read this book via Netgalley. I remembered this author from my younger days, and this appeared to be a re-release of an older title.

Martha has just moved to a creepy old house in the country with her father and new stepmother and stepbrother Colin. Almost immediately creepy things begin to happen - weird phone calls, and mysterious visions. Even Colin seems to feel it. Martha's new friends Blake and Wynn, cousins who look very similar, tell her about what happened in the house just last year -...more

Martha’s parents have just divorced and her father decides to move with Martha into a house that his new wife has chosen. Away from the city she grew up in, her family and friends, Martha is alone and scared. Her stepmother, Sally, isn’t much help in the transition and her new stepbrother, Conor, acts like a real creep. The house that they move in to is an old, creaky Victorian house in the middle of the woods. It immediately frightens Martha. Then the tricks start happening. Phone calls that al...more

I'm giving this one 3.5/5 stars as an adult. If I were a teenager, I would have given it 4 stars. It could have been a lot more spooky and gory. But from what I hear that's not the authors style...well this is a "teen" sort of book so maybe it SHOULDN'T be that way haha. I'm a huge horror fan so that's what I like.

The only thing I would have liked better about this book, is if it had more to do with Halloween. Being named Trick or Treat it didn't have a whole lot of Halloween themed stuff, whic...more

I don't think I've ever given 5 stars to a Point Horror - except perhaps LJ Smith's Forbidden Game trilogy, and I have that from a different publisher - but this one deserves it. It has everything that I want from YA horror - a small-town setting, an interesting plot, a villain that I wasn't expecting, a heroine that I empathise with (well, mostly), romance (there's never enough romance for love-junkie me, but this had more than most), supporting characters that I would want for my own friends w...more

Hooray! 90s YA cheese is re-emerging! My evil plan is working! What?

Yes, TRICK OR TREAT was originally 90s cheese of my now major obsession. No, it's not a total turd like some cheese is. I was actually really surprised reading this and realizing just how well it transcended time. Initially I thought it might have been updated but with the mention of records, cassettes and VHS tapes, my fears were eased.

I am always super giddy for horror and sometimes that eagerness comes around to bite me in th...more

I read this when I was a kid and fell in love; not just with this book but with the author. I kept an eye out for her books wherever I went. I just couldn't get my fill! I recently had the urge to pick up some books from my childhood/teenage years and this was one of them. I was concerned that with the many years that have passed since I had first read it, I would no longer enjoy it, but the magic was still there! I can't wait to read more of Richie Tankersley Cusick's books and relive my childh...more

Martha's life changes drastically when she, her father, her father's new wife, and her new stepbrother (Connor) move to a new house in a new town. Martha barely knows her new family, she's new in town, and weird things keep happening in the new house...could it possibly be haunted? It's very probable. You see, Martha soon learns that there was a murder in that house not that long ago. Then someone starts pranking Martha, just like they did Elizabeth, the girl who...more

This book was one of the 3 titles that are part of my challenge from a colleague, to read this year. The challenge is to read at least one of the titles but you can read all 3 if you wish. This one, part of the Point Horror series from the 1990's, was one of my friends favourites, and he was a fan of the Point Horror books when he was younger.

Sadly, being older, the whole Point Horror phenomenon passed me by. I hadn't even heard of them (I am about 20 years older than him). In my day it was Arma...more

Since I can only measure Richie's works against the scale of bad made for TV teen films I would say that this book is a little less upbeat teen drama and more of wanna be John Carpenter. So a different vibe but still highly enjoyable.

Once again her works tick off on all of the cliches that defined this genera back in it's time - new kid moves into town with her dad, step mother and step brother, has trouble adjusting but still manages to end up with the most popular and handsomest guy in school...more

I remember getting so addicted to the Point Horror series when I was around 10, there were so many in my school's mini library but this story really struck out for me. It really terrified me, the suspense was so great. I don't even remember what happens but all I remember is jumping at every sound I heard while read it.

Not a very good review but I just loved these books and I would love to reread some of them!

I don't remember too many details about this one except that I absolutely loved the book and its cover. I read this during my R.L. Stine & Christopher Pike days (yeah, long ago). Trick or Treat, though quite an unoriginal title, ranks right up there with R.L. Stine's Twisted in my book. Creepy good fun! I may have to revisit this one for the sake of nostalgia.

I missed out on reading the Point Horror series when I was a teenager. At 22 I can honestly say I loved them, they don't feel like a waste of time. Definitely worth the 50 cents I paid for it at the op shop, will be passing it on to my own daughters when I have them.

This book was just too good! It made me terrified, and in the end i cancelled my plans to go out so that i could finish reading it! After reading this book, I continued to look at other books by the amazing Richie Tankersley Cusick, and i would absolutely continue to carry on recommending these books!

Read these by the boatload in elementary school, alongside a steady diet of Stephen King. They were lots of fun and a little scary. I don't remember any of the stories but recognize a few of the covers.

OMG! Cusick got me through my math classes in Jr and High School. I loved her books! :) My first favorite author. Before Whedon... before Austen... before O'Henry... before anyone else!

This book is for young kids.. But I read it every year, and I'm 26. This book always get me in the mood for fall and Halloween! I love the way she describes the scenery.

Not scary but suspenseful. I finished it in a day because I had to know what happened. There's a continuity error and some typos, but overall a good read.

It was great to be taken back to my childhood with a point horror book. The story was moderately scary but I thought the ending was a little weak. Made for some good light reading though

This was my first point horror I ever read when I was about 11. I don't recall the story clearly, but it brings back happy nostalgic memories :)
