I won't lie — it took me a while to get into Anne's story. After all, this is children's literature and, for me, there is very few middle grade and/or children's books worthwhile. But because of some very trusted friends' opinions, I chose to persevere — and I'm so glad I did! Despite the rather slow start, Anne of Green Gables was a very pleasant and enchanting story to behold.

I believe my favorite aspect of this story is Anne's relationship with her stepparent, Matthew. Almost instantaneously, Matthew takes to Anne as if she were his biological daughter; to use Anne's own words, she and Matthew are kindred spirits. I only wish that parent/child relationships were written that way more often in juvenile literature today.

Thin, freckled, and with hair the color of carrots, Anne is ridiculed for her queer looks — but with a bright imagination and fierce determination to be loved and cared for, Anne soon makes many friends.
Like most girls her age, Anne is impulsive and high-strung. But she's also high-spirited and enthusiastic for what life has to offer. Even if you're not sold on Anne's character at first, most readers will fall for her by the end, just as I did.

Kisah yang benar-benar inspiratif. Saya benar-benar kagum pada penulisnya. Membutuhkan imajinasi yang tinggi untuk bisa menciptakan tokoh dengan karakter yang memiliki daya hayal luar biasa plus kata-kata 'canggih' nya. Anne (dengan akhiran 'e' tentu saja) benar-benar telah membuat saya jatuh cinta dengan keceriaannya, keterbukaannya, kejujurannya, dan aksi nya yang selalu berani bahkan sering menantang bahaya.

Imajinasi Anne luar biasa. Membuatnya sering melamun dan kadang lupa untuk kembali ke alam nyata. Marilla kerap jengkel padanya. Meski demikian, semua yang ada pada diri Anne membuat Marilla dan Matthew semakin hari semakin mencintai gadis itu.

Melalui Anne, desa Avonlea digambarkan begitu indah, membuat saya ingin mengunjunginya hehe. Anne selalu bisa bergembira, meski hanya dalam imajinasinya. Dia selalu bisa melihat kebahagiaan dari sisi yang lain. Bahkan ketika dia harus melepaskan beasiswa, mengubur impiannya untuk kuliah di Redmond, demi Marilla yang terancam buta dan hidup sendiri krn Matthew telah tiada, demi Green Gables yang terancam akan dijual, Anne tetap tersenyum dan berbahagia dengan keputusannya.

"Ketika aku meninggalkan Akademi Queen, tampaknya masa depanku terbentang luas di hadapanku, spt jalan lurus. Kupikir aku bisa melihatnya hingga patok2 jalan yg terjauh. Sekarang, ada belokan disana. Aku tak tau apa yang ada di sekitar belokan itu, tapi aku percaya hal2 itu adalah yang terbaik. Belokan itu memiliki pesona dan kelebihannya sendiri, Marilla..."

Buku yang bagus. Kisah yang menyentuh. Cerita yang banyak memberi pelajaran. Berbahagialah dengan apa yang kau miliki. Berbahagialah selalu seperti Anne :)(less)

Ive decided that instead of reviewing this book, I will copy my favorite passages....passages that capture what I love about the book.....
Page 180 describes Anne perfectly, "The downfall of some dear hope or plan plunged Anne into "deeps of affliction." The fulfilment thereof exalted her to dizzy realms of delight."

So about eight hours before Husband and I were supposed to leave for our honeymoon, I noticed that the only two books I had on hand were hardcover copies of I Hunt Killers and Anna Dressed in Blood, and that there was no way either of those books would hold me over for two weeks. They might not even get me through the flight.

I've read the Anne of Green Gables series once before - over twenty years ago. In spite of the amount of time that has elapsed, I clearly recall reading the last book in the series very slowly and thinking to myself, "I will be so sad to not be able to read about Anne anymore." I've read the Anne of Green Gables series once before - over twenty years ago. In spite of the amount of time that has elapsed, I clearly recall reading the last book in the series very slowly and thinking to myself, "I will be so sad to not be able to read about Anne anymore." When I picked up this book a few days ago to re-read it, I found within a few chapters that it was like seeing an old friend. Anne was even more delightful than I recalled, since I now have daughters who share her "scope for imagination," her penchant for large words and her zest for life. Reading about Anne's appreciation for life's loveliness made me appreciate my daughters and long to live more in-the-moment myself. So, I decided that a book that feels like an old friend after twenty years deserves five stars.

Anne Shirley must be one of the most delightful characters ever written, largely because she is far from perfect. She makes mistakes, as we all do, but her mistakes are much funnier than my own feel and she makes me see the value in learning from each of them, laughing at them and moving on. Like my middle daughter, there is no lukewarm with Anne. I love that she approaches life enthusiastically, despite have spent a decade belonging to no one.

I also like that Anne talks straightforwardly about wanting, seeking and building friendships. Even now, I am hesitant, awkward and scattershot at building relationships. I may meet someone who seems a kindred spirit, but lack the time or, let's be honest, sheer boldness to approach them and seek to build a friendship. We see Anne seek and build relationships not only upon her arrival in Avonlea, but during her time at Queens.

One reasons I re-read this book was because two friends recommended it for it's fluency in writing dialogue. Unlike Little Women, which I attempted to read for the writing, this book did not disappoint. The dialogue sounds exactly like each character would sound and it flows smoothly from narration to dialogue and back. In fact, I'm baffled that Little Women routinely makes top 100 lists while Anne of Green Gables is nowhere to be found on the lists of must-read classics. Unlike the Little Women characters who are archetypes rather than three dimensional characters, Anne is a bold a female character who refuses to be categorized. That's exactly why I love her and love this book.(less)

Sejatinya, novel ini adalah bacaan untuk segala umur. Menyenangkan membaca sebuah buku yang karakter utamanya anak-anak. Sepertinya cerita yang hadir terasa lebih jujur. Atau mungkin juga lantaran diam-diam kita selalu rindu untuk kembali ke masa-masa manis itu, masa kecil kita, tatkala semua terasa mudah dan indah.

Tokoh utamanya adalah Anne, seorang anak perempuan berumur 11 tahun. Mulanya Anne hidup sebatang kara di dunia ini. Ayah dan ibunya meninggal ketika Anne masih sangat kecil. Ia lalu secara bergantian diasuh oleh beberapa orang kerabat ayah ibunya sebelum akhirnya dipelihara di sebuah panti asuhan. Anne juga pernah mengalami masa-masa sulit lainnya sebagai pelayan dan pengasuh anak.

Tetapi Anne adalah seorang anak periang yang selalu berpikir positif dan memiliki ambisi tinggi untuk hal-hal yang baik di samping sifatnya yang romantis yang menyebabkan ia senang berkhayal. Dia memperlakukan dunia dan orang-orang di sekitarnya dengan penuh kasih sayang. Ia juga seorang gadis kecil yang sangat impulsif, jujur, serta sahabat yang setia bagi Diana Barry. Meskipun kadang-kadang ia membuat kesalahan yang tidak perlu, namun ia tak pernah mengulangi kesalahan yang sama itu di lain waktu. Nyaris tak ada hal yang mampu membuatnya bersedih dan marah kecuali jika ada yang berani menghina rambut merahnya dan memanggilnya “wortel”.

Green Gables adalah nama pondok petani milik kakak beradik Cuthbert. Tatkala Marilla dan Matthew beranjak semakin tua, mereka memutuskan untuk mengadopsi seorang anak lelaki agar bisa membantu kerja mereka di ladang. Akan tetapi, panti asuhan telah melakukan sebuah keliruan. Kekeliruan yang kelak justru sangat disyukuri oleh Marilla dan Matthew : mengirimkan Anne.

Hidup kedua Cuthbert yang tidak pernah menikah itu pun perlahan-lahan berubah berkat kehadiran gadis cilik yang suka memberi nama setiap pohon dan tempat di sekitarnya itu. Pohon ceri tua di muka pondok pun kini punya nama romantis, Ratu Salju. Begitu juga danau, jalan desa, bunga-bunga, dan hutan. Sesuai sifat Anne yang romantis, nama-nama yang diberikannya pun nama-nama yang indah : Danau Air Riak Berkilau, Kanopi Kekasih, Permadani Violet…..

Segera saja Anne membuat jatuh cinta hampir seluruh penghuni Avonlea, desa kecil di Pulau Prince Edward, Kanada. Oh, bukan cuma orang-orang di buku itu yang dibuatnya jatuh cinta, tetapi juga termasuk saya. Karakter rekaaan Lucy Montgomery ini begitu kuatnya, sehingga seolah-olah ia benar-benar hidup dan menjelma ke luar buku. Atau sebaliknya, saya yang merasa seakan-akan ikut menjadi bagian cerita dan tinggal di Avonlea.

Sebagai pendongeng, Lucy telah berhasil memikat hati pembacanya. Dengan cemerlang ia memindahkan dunia riil (kehidupan pedesaan) ke dalam buku lewat deskripsi dan imajinasinya sehingga Anne of Green Gables menjadi sebuah buku klasik yang indah dan abadi. Ia menciptakan konflik-konfliknya secara sangat wajar dan menyelesaikannya juga dengan elegan. Kadang-kadang berakhir lucu dan kali lain penuh keharuan. Tak ada yang dipaksakan. Semuanya mengalir jernih. Moral ceritanya terbungkus rapi sehingga hampir-hampir kita tak merasakan kehadirannya.

Penggambarannya tentang Avonlea membuat saya jadi merindukan desa. Bukan kampung halaman–karena saya sudah tidak punya kampung–tetapi desa seperti yang selama ini saya kenal lewat tulisan, lukisan, dan sajak-sajak: ada pohon-pohon, bunga, gemericik sungai, telaga, langit yang cerah, kicau burung, panen buah, daun yang gugur, tetangga yang ramah, gosip-gosip, harum kue dipanggang, ayam-ayam, itik, semak belukar……Namun bagian terpenting adalah semangat buku ini: kasih sayang. Sekejap saya terkenang kisah Little House on the Prairie.

Seluruhnya kisah Anne ini terdiri dari 8 judul yang akan bercerita hingga Anne dewasa. Mudah-mudahan Qanita mau menerbitkan semuanya. Jangan seperti nasib serial Anastasia Krupnik (Lois Lowry) yang entah kenapa, mandek di buku ketiga.

Nah, Teman, setelah semua kenikmatan membaca buku ini berakhir, agaknya saya harus memasukkan Anne of Green Gables ke dalam daftar buku favorit saya sepanjang masa.***

Hampir tidak ada orang Jepang yang tidak kenal Anne of Green Gables. "Anne" ditulis pada awal abad 20 sebelum perang dunia I, mengambil masa penuh kedamaian dan kepolosan di pulau Prince Edward di Kanada, di sebuah lahan pertanian di Cavendish. Banyak orang Jepang yang menggemari cerita ini, sampai bela-belain nikahan di sana!!!

I don't get why everyone keeps going on about Gilbert Blythe when he's hardly in this book. To my disappointment it's all Anne's fault and her obstinate efforts to remain a grudge holder for 5 years. Five years she held a grudge for him for calling her "carrots", even thought he immediately apologized and sucked up for two years; and yet, Josie Pye has done worse 10x over and Anne remained cordial with her. I don't get it.

Amazing Anne Shirley you should be a role model for many girls. Brave, strong willed and with such great dreams and big imagination.

Gilbert Blythe was perhaps my first Book Boyfriend. Oh, what I was in love with him. Lovely, lovely Anne and Gilbert, what a good and nice young lovestory. Everything in these books are so wonderful. Then there's the great TV series. I loved it all ... and still do.

Akhirnya setelah lama membiarkan kamar berantakan timbul keinginan saya untuk membereskan kamar, berikut dengan tumpukan buku yang berserakan dilantai maupun di kasur ( yups, kadang saya gunakan sebagai selimut buku-buku yang belum dibaca ). Nah begitu selesai, tangan saya mengambil dan menyisihkan si Anne ini, kemudian tanpa sadar membuka bungkus plastiknya dan mulai membaca kata-kata awal Anne yang ditulis dibawah pohon untuk Marilla Cuthbert, dan tanpa saya sadari ternyata sudah jam 1 dini hari dan saya sudah sampai chapter 25...sungguh-sungguh ketidaksengajaan yang menyenangkan. Akhirnya saya letakkan buku ini dan berusaha untuk tidur dengan mengalihkan pikiran saya dari Anne, meskipun dengan susah payah, saya berhasil tertidur. Dan paginya saya sedikit terlambat ke kantor karena bangun kesiangan.

Tapi ternyata di kantorpun saya sangat sulit untuk berkonsentrasi dikarenakan pikiran saya selalu pada si Anne ini. Duh. Selama seharian tersebut pekerjaan saya agak berantakan. Beruntung buku si Anne ini saya tinggal dirumah, saya tidak tahu apa jadinya kalo buku ini saya bawa ke kantor, pasti pikiran saya akan lebih kacau lagi karena daya magnet buku ini begitu kuat. Begitu jam pulang kantor tiba saya bersegera pulang dan memegang buku ini, dengan berusaha sekuat tenaga untuk akan memulai membacanya setelah saya menyelesaikan pekerjaan kantor yang bawa pulang.

Akhirnya jam 11 saya memulai membacanya lagi melanjutkan ke chapter 26, dengan ditemani sms dari seorang Aki yang kesepian minta ditemani ngerumpi akhirnya saya menyelesaikan buku si Anne ini pada jam 2 malam dengan hati haru-biru dan menitikkan air mata (bukan karena gosip dari si Aki yah ) karena akhir yang bukan bahagia tapi melegakan. Si Aki sempat menanyakan apa yang membuat saya menangis, kemudian saya ceritakan saja apa yang saya baca dan dia pura-pura tidak membaca sms saya, "Wakkksss spoiler!" katanya dengan panik.

Yups si Anne of Green Gables telah menyihir saya untuk menikmati indahnya Avonlea di Prince Edwards Island dan Green Gables dengan cara pandang yang berbeda, Anne mengajak saya berpetualang menjelajahi Permadani Violet dan Hutan Berhantu, mengunjungi Kanopi Kekasih dan bertemu dengan Ratu Salju atau berperahu mengitari danau Air Riak Berkilau dengan cara yang lain yaitu dengan cara memperluas daya imaji saya. Ehhhmmm Anne memang hebat, anak gadis 11 tahun ini memang berbeda dari anak gadi yang lain, dia selalu membawa keceriaan buat sekitarnya dan orang-orang yang mencintainya.

Anne selalu memberi nama pada segala sesuatu yang dia temui, Anne selalu tergetar setiap kali menemukan nama yang tepat pada sesuatu yang dia temui. Seperti yang dikatakan pada Matthew Cuthbert saat dia mengganti nama Danau Barry menjadi Danau Air Riak Berkilau,
"Ya itu adalah nama yang tepat untuknya, aku tahu, karena aku tergetar. Ketika aku menemukan sebuah nama yang tepat, biasanya aku langsung tergetar....

Anne seorang yatim-piatu dari Nova Scotia, orangtuanya meninggal karena wabah demam. Dan membuat dia diasuh oleh keluarga mantan pengasuhnya dulu, meski dia menghadapi perlakuan yang kurang menyenangkan tapi tidak membuat gadis cilik ini berkecil hati. bahkan dia menanggapinya dengan sangat dewasa, seperti saat dia ditanya mengenai perlakuan kurang baik Nyonya-nyonya ( Mrs.Thomas dan Mrs.Hammond )yang diikutinya, Anne hanya menjawab; Oh, mereka bermaksud begitu--aku tahu mereka bermaksud untuk bersikap sebaik dan semurah hati mungkin. Dan ketika orang-orang bermaksud baik kepada kita, kita tak akan terlalu peduli jika mereka tidak diam saja--Anda tahu mereka memiliki banyak hal untuk dikhawatirkan.... Sangat tidak mudah buat seorang gadis cilik dibawah 11 tahun memandang kehidupannya dengan cara yang berbeda.

Anne of Green Gables bermagnet kuat karena kepolosan dan kejujurannya dalam segala hal yang terjadi padanya bahkan telah menyihir dua orang kakak adek Matthew dan Marilla Cuthbert untuk menyayanginya melebihi anak kandung. Dan kasih sayang mereka dibalas dengan pengorbanan Anne di akhir cerita. Bahkan seorang Gilbert Blythe yang dianggap musuh masa kacilnya pun mengorbankan karirnya sebagai guru di Avonlea untuk Anne, benar-benar cinta dan pengorbanan yang tak terungkapkan.

Buku Bagus yang MUST A READ buat semua,Buku mengenai kedewasaan dalam memandang kehidupan dengan cara yang berbeda. Ohya jangan sekali-sekali memanggil Anne dengan Wortel atau mengatai-ngatai rambut merahnya, kalau anda tidak ingin Anne membenci anda.

Montgomery, L.M. 1908. Anne of Green Gables.

I first 'discovered' Anne Shirley through watching the 1985 and 1987 films by Kevin Sullivan/Wonderworks when they aired on my local PBS station. As far as I'm concerned, these two are the ONLY films that are 'real.' Meaning that the monstrosity of a film released in 2000 doesn't exist at all. It's something that should be avoided at all costs. It is evil, evil, pure evil.

To be brutally honest, I was disappointed. I found Anne quite often to be annoying and found my self skimming through many of her rambling soliloquies. Many (especially those of the female gender I suppose) may find her apt to talk ad nauseum to be one of her most enduring qualities, I however did not.

I am probably the only adult women in the world who has not read this book so after years of it nagging at me I finally read it. Like everyone else, loved it. It was full of charm. If I would have read this years ago I would not have enjoyed it as much as I just did. I found it soothing at times to read of Marrilla's concern for Anne development and could relate to it so much myself having a bunch of silly little girls in my house. I hadn't read this book since I was a young reader and I wasn't disappointed with the reread! I still found Anne to be a compelling heroine and was moved to tears (on several occasions). I had forgotten how profound it was for me (as a young chatterbox) to read about another chatterbox. Never underestimate the power of seeing a part of yourself reflected in print!

What a delightful book! Reading this truly made me happy. Anne's character was a hoot!! I found myself giggling throughout the book. Her quirkiness was endearing. Her view of life was fascinating. She had the spunk that you can't help but love! She brought the kid out of me and it felt wonderful.

I finally finished it! I have started this book three times and just couldn't get through Anne's tedious ramblings; however, I'm happy I finally finished. I thought it was great! Anne kind of drove me crazy at times- judgmental and proud, but she had so many redeeming qualities and such an creative innocence, and she was so aware of her weaknesses that I couldn't be irritated for too long. That doesn't mean you don't see the book for what it is though - sometimes you know that the book really isn't great, but because it kept you company in the dark or when your friends forgot you, it doesn't matter.

I'm glad to report that Anne Of Green Gables is every bit as magical and heartwarming as it was when I was a child. LM Montgomery's lead character remains a fascinating, brilliant creation, quicksilver and fairy tales made flesh. Anne's delightful imagination and personality carry her and everyone around her - including Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert (the elderly brother and sister who accidentally adopt Anne in place of the sturdy boy they wanted), her best friend Diana Barry and the readers - with her wherever she goes.

What is thrilling to rediscover when reading this book with older eyes is how Anne's adventures are, when it comes down to it, surprisingly earth-bound. Her flights of fancy are little more than daydreams and the dewdrop stuff of imagination - they disappear overnight, or when real life intrudes. The power of Montgomery's narrative is that she convinces us, through Anne's loving, vibrant spirit and zest for life, that there is nevertheless magic and adventure in the everyday - that there's reason enough in the world to get out of bed even if things aren't going quite right.

As a child, I suppose I identified with Anne, who was and is one of the most blithely appealing, independent-minded little girls ever set to paper. She's as sweet, obstinate and determined as you'd expect of girls in far more modern times, which is rather a feat considering that Montgomery wrote her books in the very early 1900s. Anne is no damsel in distress, but rather a tiny fireball who chatters her way through life and into your heart - as the Cuthberts can't help but discover.

Really what impressed me the most was how the book is equally adept at developing insights into all its characters - Anne is the prism through which we view everyone else, but they're all wonderfully real as well, from the sweet, simple Diana who loves Anne ardently, through to imperious but tender-hearted village busybody Rachel Lynde. Matthew, who first finds and insists upon keeping this queer, fierce little girl, returns the love she gives him in as fierce and unconditional a fashion as he knows how.

The real triumph, however, is Marilla Cuthbert - a spinster who had thought herself set in her ways and was perfectly content to remain so. The way she approaches Anne first with apprehension, then with concern, tenderness, and finally the deepest of affection tells its own story of the magic we all can wield in our lives - the power of love, acceptance and change, whether we realise what's happening or not.

It's a delight to discover that the book is even more lyrical than I'd remembered: Montgomery paints pictures with her words, creating a Prince Edward Island (real) and Avonlea (imagined) so beautiful you can understand why Anne goes into raptures when she does little more than gaze out of her gable window or walk past the Lake Of Shining Waters.

There's so much here that's iconic for any little girl who's ever buried herself in this series. Anne's frustrated encounter with Gilbert Blythe, the boy who will become her classroom enemy and so much more - Anne's path from chatterbox child to willowy young woman - the choice Anne must make at the end of the book that marks, more clearly than anything, the heartbreaking end of her childhood. All in all, it's a rich, smart, emotional journey that's at once magical and very, very real.(less)

Boo!It's boring as hell! I never finish it. This book hasn't got any conflict at all which for me doesnt worth reading. I wonder why this book (just like To Kill A Mockingbird which is also boring) is in "The best book ever". It's totally ridiculous. I have to read 500 pages just to find out about a little girl's boring flat life. It really wasted my time, and money to buy this book in the first place.

I thought this book was boring the first time I tried to read it, but I gave it another try a few years later and I loved it. Whenever anyone asks what my favorite book is, this always comes to mind before I realize that I'm probably supposed to give an "adult" book for an answer. The characters are so likeable and all their adventures are believable. I always wished I could be friends with Anne and Diana.

In a word: Trite. I know that sounds snobby, but come on. Anne is the epitome of a Mary Sue character. Awh, poor thing, she's too skinny, and her red hair is too unique, and she's just so quirky! Isn't she just the perfect little flawed heroine!? Actually, no. She's obnoxious. Even as a child I couldn't buy in to this garbage.

I read this when I was about ten or eleven, and forgot how much I adored it. I've finally got the whole set of the Anne books, so I sat down to reread this one today. It's easy to read, and charming, and more touching than I'd remembered -- I came over all sniffly a couple of times. And I also had a lot of delighted little giggles.

This will be one with slower progress, I think, because we have had to stop more frequently to discuss certain words..
