From this book, I simultaneously able to learn three different culture, which were French's, American's, and English'. Stephen Clarke tells us a story about an Englishmen,Paul West, who's need a job badly to pay his debt when his restaurant in Paris was fined because its menu was written in English, and Paul didn't want to translate it into French.
Paul then applied for a job, and he got one. He has to promote his country, so that the American would vote Britain in World Tourism Promotion inste...more

This is a light and funny book about a hapless Brit who runs a tea shop in Paris and gets in trouble with the French language police because his menu is in English. To pay off his fine, he agrees to represent the UK in a jaunt across the USA to promote British tourism. Wearing a kilt and driving a Union-Jack-emblazoned Mini, he travels from Boston to Miami to New Orleans to Las Vegas to Los Angeles, hosting various promotional events. They all end with mishaps. Friends from back home join hi...more

I didn't have great expectations for this one - I'd read Stephen Clarke's previous two books in the set and enjoyed them, but this plot just seemed too convoluted. British ex-pat in France takes a job with an English tourist agency to tour the U.S. in a Mini (with his French girlfriend) and promote tourism. I wasn't sure how that was going to make a book. As it turns out, it made a perfect platform for Clarke to play up the madcap, slapstick style of his writing. Lots of poking fun at us Ame...more

I loved the first two books in this series, but feel this one fell a little flat. Perhaps had he made more fun of Americans, of our quirks, eccentricities, etc, like he does the French, it would have held my interest more. I completed the book, with its rushed ending (that I found surprisingly satisfying!), but really, just wanted to go back to Clarke's first book.

I've read the other two books in Stephen Clarke's series about a Brit living in Paris. They are easy to read, full of fun British humor and French travel tales, and lots a great images about my favorite city. Not a heady read, but I'm ready to hear what happens to our protagonist next.

Quite an enjoyable and engaging read. A little less of the whiticism that made the first two so enjoyable. The protaganist also is far less the panic-ridden sort that also tended to enliven the stories. A good read, but its more fun to imagine the story in France.

A book that makes time fly. Witty, funny, and at times hilarious; highly recommended for a quick, light read. The ending is also not bad, specially for a book of this genre. Note to myself, have to read the others in the series.

a francophile british man and his french girfriend embark on a road trip across america. hilarity has and will continue to ensue. especially when the main character (british) learns about US history and gives his comments.

I read this book while I was in France because it was one of the few English-language books they had in the bookstore. It was funny, but I'm not sure if I'd think it was funny now that it's less relevant.

Mildly amusing, but overall kinda not nice. He plays to the worst caricatures of every nationality and regional area. I just got tired of it.

A Brit travels through America--his observations of America/ns are hysterical. Again, loosely based on Stephen Clarke's experiences.

Third book in the Merde series. Unknowingly, I read it before the first two, because I thought this WAS the first book. Hahaha..

Funny, but somehow lacks the freshness of the first book.
