This book is about a special ed teacher and her relationship with "one child". The child, Sheila, has been severely abused, left on the interstate by her mother, neglected by her father and is only 6 years old. The story is a true store of how Hayden helped Sheila come out of her shell and trust someone will not abandon her and begin to love again.

I first read this book when I was about 12 years old, and it helped to spark my interest in psychology. It is a remarkable true story about a severely abused young girl (who also happened to be a genius) and the special ed teacher who was the only one able to reach her and start her on a path of healing and recovery.

I remember reading this story as a child and being engrossed in it. It's reminiscent of "A child called It" because of its extreme depiction of a child in severe abuse and neglect.
Reading again as an adult and as an educator who works with at risk children I was horrified. The story is a memoir written by a special ed teacher. I have read a few of Torey Hayden's books and I had been meaning to read this one for a long time. A usually with Hayden's books, it follows her experiences working with children with special needs and running a special needs class. One of my most loved books of all time. I read it many times as a teenager and in my 20's until I lost track of my copy. Finally picked up a new copy, and it was like being reunited with an old friend. Torey Hayden's One Child was the first book I ever read about behaviorally challenged children. This book is about a young girl, abused in so many ways, and thanks to a wonderful teacher (one who actually cares about the children she works with, versus those who are there for whatever reason). This child overcomes more in her early years of life than what most people do in a life time. This is a powerful book written by a special educator. For one of my classes I has to read another one or Torey's experiences "Just Another Kid." Both are based on actual experiences of Torey teaching special education. I really related. She writes in a very raw way so there is inappropriate language spoken by her students. Also, situations of her students are really difficult and hard so be prepared. I felt she wrote in such an honest and straightforward way that she could have been in my class...more

Torey Hayden è la maestra matta dei matti, cosa che pensano un po' tutti, probabilmente anche la gran parte di quelli che leggono i suoi libri, ma molto probabilmente è meno matta di tutti noi messi insieme.
Personalmente avrei preso Sheila a schiaffoni tutte le volte che voleva avere ragione lei, ma evidentemente non sarebbe servito a niente lo stesso. Dopotutto io non sono una maestra e non ho neanche metà della pazienza che servirebbe per sopportare dei bambini normali, senza intenzioni suici...more

This book was absorbing and enthralling. It drew me in slowly, introducing Sheila, first, as merely a statistic in a newspaper. Insignificant and unimportant despite the horrendous act which she has committed. This is a good way for us to "meet" this brilliant and joyous little girl because it's how she has been viewed all of her short life. Tinha bastante curiosidade em relação a este livro e a esta escritora. As expectativas não eram altas porque acho sempre que este tipo de livro que “puxa pelo sentimento” e que , ainda por cima, é um best seller não é nada de especial.

This type of book is usually something I stray from: it's psychology based and in an almost authobigraphical manner, but apparently these two wrongs make a right. This was the first book I ever read about child abuse. It's still as sad and shocking on my second read of it. Some of the things that happen to Sheila bring me to tears. At first I thought this was all about the theories of handling the incapable kids. Yet when I read the very first page, I knew that this would be an amazing story of a full-of-love yet strict teacher struggling to manage the class with full of special care kids.
