Baise-Moi (Rape Me)
Baise-Moi is one of the most controversial French novels of recent years, a punk fantasy that takes female rage to its outer limits. Now the basis for a hit underground film which was banned in France, Baise-Moi is a searing story of two women on a rampage that is part Thelma and Louise, part Viking conquest. Manu and Nadine have had all they can take. Manu has been brutal...more

Not as brilliant as some other of Despente's works, but interesting, as always. Despentes can't really fail a book, she's too clever and too good a writer. I never have so hard a time reading French as with a Despentes book, mostly because of the difficult dialogue. No one I know speaks French like that. Still, I always enjoy her crude language, her brutal insights and how far away from the norm her protagonists are. Manu and Nadine are very interesting characters. Manu has been raped, and there...more
Baise Moi is an aberration, to most, because while it exists to portray female rage, that rage is not directed to men only. Well, let's say that the rage is directed against men most of the time, it is also directed against the whole world in general.
My fascination with this story (female rage) started with Ms. 45, reaching its pinnacle here (I think I’d have to explain myself about my experience but I think the reason is that individuals like me who see themselves outside of the establishment)....more

It's hard to know how to take this, mainly because I've never read anything quite like it. For this reason - its uniqueness - let's say it's good. And it is: fast-moving, convincing, entertaining. Fine writing it ain't, but it doesn't waste words and it doesn't feel as if it's unfolding to an agenda. On my edition (the Black Inc Australian one) an Australian woman critic calls it (or the film version) a story about 'women on top', and adds 'Vive le revolution!' But if you're looking for catharti...more
Baise-Moi is a violent, sexually explicit novel containing so much rage that it is almost unbearable. I almost feel a little guilty for enjoying it so much, but I can’t help myself. The novel centers around two young female characters: Manu and Nadine. Manu is a young woman who seems detached from life. She drinks far too much, does drugs, and even makes adult films on occasion to fund her drinking and drug abuse. She puts no value in herself, her body, or anything else. After being horrifically...more
Translated from a French novel, this is a really interesting Thelma-and Louise type story of two women who go on a bloody rampage. Set in a French culture of drugs, alcohol, promiscuous sex, and rape, the two heroines find themselves connected by an indescribable bond. Though they aren't sexually engaged, they develop a quasi-lesbianic relationship and become highly devoted to one another. Both characters, as well as most of the minor characters, are fascinatingly quirky. A quick and a really in...more

I don't really know where to start, it was a tad too sexually graphic for my personal tastes, but I understand that it was necessary. If Thelma & Louise actually had any balls, this is what they would have been like...and this is what happens when girls get raped, sadly. (not the murder spree, just the loss of value for themselves and life) and the need to push themselves to the limit in order to even feel anything at all.

I read this book for an English course entitled: "The World is a Ghetto." This is a rather rude and crude lifestyle of poorer class young women in paris. The book is very graphic with displays of sex, violence, drugs, and murder.

Virginie Despentes is a French writer, novelist and filmmaker, born in Nancy, Meurthe-et-Moselle. Her most famous novel, and film of the same name is Baise-moi, a contemporary example of the exploitation films genre known as rape and revenge films.
