The Warden Threat (Warden’s World #1)
by
D.L. Morrese (Goodreads Author)
This ‘laugh-out-loud’ parody is a unique book. Technically science fiction, it is almost an anti-fantasy, which pokes a fair, or perhaps an unfair amount of good-natured fun at the serious tone and dependence on magic common to many epic fantasy adventure genre novels. With its charming and truly likeable characters, witty, intelligent humor, and prose style blending humor...more

I love parodies and light hearted spoofs. The Warden Threat (Defying Fate, Book 1) is a spoof of the epic fantasy genre and there’s nothing mean or demeaning about it. The author had a great time with a genre and his joy shines through the page through humor. This is a fun read with a great underlying message that can be enjoyed by audiences of all ages.

‘The Warden Threat’ is a light-hearted parody of epic fantasy. Though the genre is noted as science fiction, the science fiction was suggested rather than explicit. It’s a fun read with a darker underlying theme of political and religious manipulation.
Our hero is Prince Donald, third son of the king of Westgrove and quintessential archetypal fool. He’s sweet, naive and idealistic, and longs to be the hero in a story. He’s left the palace to wander the country in search of adventure and to get to...more

THE WARDEN THREAT is a lighthearted epic fantasy parody with a science fiction twist that kept me engaged and entertained from page one. The journey starts with prince Donald’s initial foray into the wider world to “find out about the commoners”, as ordered by his loving but overprotective mother, but proceeds through the country of Westgrove and into the border of neighboring nation Gotrox, home of the stoutfolk. Despite the epic fantasy trappings, the story is humorous and fun, clearly not tak...more
The Warden Threat, by D.L. Morrese, is like a Shirley Temple – light, sweet, fun and sparkly. It’s part of a grown-up genre, yet appropriate for all ages. Actually, that said, it’s more of a Dirty Shirley, in that it’s laugh-out-loud funny (and as you probably have no idea what I’m talking about, let’s move on.)
I did catch a few typos and a couple of missing commas, but other than that, the grammar is refreshingly precise and the vocabulary, well, scrumptious. I admit, I had to look one or two w...more

Three Stars: A funny foray in the fantasy genre.
Prince Donald, third heir to the throne, sets out to find an adventure. As the youngest son, he has little responsibility in his life. No one really takes him seriously. Being young and impressionable, he longs for a thrilling experience. He hopes to journey through his kingdom and perhaps save a damsel in distress or stop some bandits. Anything that will allow him to be a hero like those he worships in his books. He is accompanied by Kwestor, an o...more

The Warden Threat is a fantasy novel. Or an anti-fantasy novel, as the author puts it. It's a parody of the usual fantasy fare, and a jolly good read it is too.
The book follows the exploits of Prince Donald, a bit of a naive dolt who has read too many adventure stories and believes he can be the hero, just like in the books he has read. But being the third son of the King he's neither use nor ornament. So off he goes, to discover the world and gain 'life experience' under the guidance of a wonde...more

This book pokes fun at just about everything. Not only at your typical fantasy adventure story, but it also takes on subjects such as religion, politics, and racism. The humor is smart and subtle, mainly by using exaggerated stereotypes. It is exactly my type of humor. Amusing, entertaining, and fun. My one disappointment was when I reached the end and realized it was the end. I will be reading the sequel for more of Prince Donald and friends. Can't wait to see where the story goes.
I enjoyed the lighthearted tone of this novel, as well as the relationship between Donald, Muce, and Kwestor. Even though the novel ends rather abruptly, leaving the reader somewhat unsatisfied, the book is overall fun to read. My favorite element was the development of Donald's character as he undergoes the hero's journey - I look forward to seeing what other adventures he will face with his friends.
