"One great achievement of the 18th century was to create the ideas and in part even the basic forms of political democracy, including the protection of the rights of the person against authoritarian power. Bit ut remains an unfulfilled goal to expand the democracy beyond the narrow arena which it partially functions, to all of social and economic life, with true control by producers over production and investment, and the elimination of structures of hierarchy and domination in the state sy...more

Chomsky's book is pretty uneven. About half of it is the usual Chomskyian stuff, but he has several essays in this book which articulate his anarchist--or, more specifically, anarcho-syndicalist--politics. He attacks strands of anarchism which are elitist, dismissive of ordinary people, or reject the working class as an agent of social change. Chomsky does engage in some straw constructions of "bolshevism," which are actually so bad that they made me cringe. It isn't that Chomsky m...more

I must say, I found this series of essays rather disappointing. This is my first encounter with Noam Chomsky, and I found what he said to be rather basic (which, of course, is not to say that it shouldn't be said or heard). I found him to be far less radical than I was expecting/hoping; I suppose I find Murray Bookchin's anarchism much more appealing.

What can I say? I think Noam Chomsky is a progressive liberal and a state apologist, but don't let that harsh your buzz, dude. Chomsky does have a pretty good grasp on anarcho/syndicalism and it's history. His analysis is of anarchism is pretty good, yet he is lacking in providing serious contribution to theoretical progression of anarchism as well as a consistent methodology. This book is several essays from other publications and a series of interviews. It's all right.

A handy reference of Chomsky's perspectives on anarchist organizing. Includes the really f-ing long but really f-ing wonderful "Objectivity and Liberal Scholarship", as well as loads of other nerdfests that will either bore you to tears or inspire you to go and make this world a better place in the best way possible - an anarchist way! Also guaranteed to make you unpopular at social gatherings.

This is a collection of essays published work- mostly interviews. If your curious where Chomsky stands in between Libertarian Socialism and Anarcho-Syndicalism this is the book for you. However the reason this book gets five stars is because of his essay on the Spanish Civil War where he really lays into the Communists who betrayed the revolution.

A collection of essays and interviews on anarchism by the most popular intellectual in the world. A refreshing non-sectarian analysis of anarchist communist and anarcho-syndicalist anarchism and libertarian elements of Marxism such as council communism.

Simply amazing. Great example of how Chomsky sees anarchy as a long term vision. This is the first Chomsky piece that I have read that really shows what he believes and how he got there.
