This is my book, so of course, I think it's WONDERFUL! LOL Seriously, if you are considering homeschooling your gifted/advanced child or are currently homeschooling a gifted/advanced learner, you should enjoy this book. I have tried to supply everyone - new and veteran alike - with some how-to's and advice for reaching and teaching exceptional children.

I initially requested (through LT ER) Cindy West’s Homeschooling Gifted and Advanced Learners (Prufrock Press, 2011) because I thought it might help me gain a better idea of what homeschooling entails and how a parent untrained in education might be able to meet the needs of a brilliant child. (FYI, my son is only 4, and I'm still trying to decide what to do.) Ms West’s book, although slim, certainly gave me a lot of things to consider in relation to my questions, and while I remain unsure what...more
I really love homeschooling books because I was homeschooled for most of high school in the 1970's, went on to college, and have spent over 20 years working with homeschooled kids from preschool to and including college including my own.
Author Cindy West has a nice way about her and I can feel her friendly personality in this book. First, let me tell you about what I don't like about this book before getting into what I do like. Cindy has apparently never heard of anything involving homeschooli...more

As a mom who has recently started homeschooling my high school aged son, I found the information in this book extremely enlightening. I had not realized how much I could tailor his learning experience to him. I also had never even considered being able to create curriculum myself. Thank you, Cindy, for giving me such valuable information.
This was an easy read. I liked that she included a lot of resources, both at the end of the book and throughout each chapter.
But I really felt like this was just a general homeschooling book, and not so much about homeschooling gifted learners. The information was good, just not nearly enough about gifted kids.

How I wish there were other books out there on this topic that were as concise and full of incredibly helpful examples! I dog-eared repeatedly and got some really wonderful ideas to incorporate into the school day :)
I read about 60 pages of this and decided it was a waste of my time. There were some really broad ideas, and mainly for older kids. I am homeschooling a kindergarten, so I don't need to read about chemistry or college applications. Also, I prefer reading more specific ideas about teaching children...not lists of characteristics to define whether your child is gifted.
Glad that I won this for free and didn't spend any money on it.
