My wish is to fall cranium over Converse in dizzy daydream-worthy love.

(If only it were that easy.

Marcie has been dragged away from home for the summer—from Idaho to a family summerhouse in New Hampshire. She’s left behind her friends, a group of freaks and geeks called the Leftovers, including her emo-rocker boyfriend, and her father.

It’s fair to say that I’m fickle when it comes to verse novels - I can’t decide whether I like them or not.

But I do like this book.

Love and Leftovers is an earnest, sweet story of a teenage girl’s journey through trials of the heart, family and friends. There’s nothing particularly ground-breaking in the plot: Marcie’s parents have split up, her father has a new boyfriend, and her depressed mother has fled across the country, dragging Marcie with her. Alone in a new state, Marcie is a...more

I really don't know what to expect with this book at first since it was written in verse. I thought it would be weird and I wouldn't be able to understand the story well and connect with the characters in that format, with just so little words. So I was really surprised when I found myself getting so caught up with the book and connecting with the main character easily. I was surprised to realize that a few words can actually contain and elicit a lot of meanings and feelings at the same time. Th...more

I ordered Love & Leftovers soon after I finished Audition because I'd really enjoyed that novel in verse and I'd remembered that April had really enjoyed this one as well. The verse in Love and Leftovers is actually far more enjoyable than in Audition, as it plays with form to build tension throughout the novel. If you're nerdily interested in that sort of thing, L&L is worth reading for that aspect alone.

What I was really surprised by was how compelling and "edgy" (ugh, I hat...more

I’m a fan of novels in verse, I am amazed at how an author can convey such emotion using so few words! Love and Leftovers is no exception to the wonderful verse novels I’ve experienced.

Marcie’s voice is incredible. It’s what made this novel such an enjoyable reading expereince. It’s imperfect, realistic and raw. Perhaps I enjoy reading verse novels so much is because of the simplicity of the writing. Everything is cut out except for what absolutely must be there. These characters are so exposed,...more

My first encounter with a book written in verses was “I heart you, You haunt me” by Lisa Schroeder which became an immediate favorite. Then it was followed by the Day Before by the same author.
When I opened “Love and Leftovers” I wasn’t expecting it to be as good as the other two books I read. I wasn’t expecting to love it so much.

Love and Leftovers was a bittersweet story about Marcie’s struggles with her parents split up, being away from her friends and her boyfriend, how to fit well in her ne...more

Cute! So cute! I absolutely loved this book. I loved Marcie and Linus. I even liked JD. They were all written well. Marcie is dealing with a lot and she makes some stupid decisions, but it never kept me from liking. That's when I know it's a good character. I have to be able to connect with them, even when they're doing not-so-great things. Linus was just the sweetest thing. I couldn't love him more. JD was nice. He was different for Marcie...more

The most difficult aspect of writing in verse is to be clear and concise while cleverly making the poetry flow and have the proper syllable count. It doesn't rhyme but it is written in a visual manner, much like Ellen Hopkins. Also like Hopkins, the emotions are raw, experiences real, subject matter relevant but a lot cleaner than Hopkins.

Marcie is dealing with a lot as her father comes out, her mother slips into depression, and she is uprooted and moved across the country where she slips into t...more

I’m a sucker for a good romantic book, so I picked up LOVE & LEFTOVERS thinking I was going to get a nice, easy, weekend read. What I wasn’t expecting was the beautifully crafted novel in verse that not only delivered a sigh-worthy love story, but also a nuanced account of a teen’s struggle with family dysfunction and the consequences of her own ill-advised actions. Marcie is a very relatable and sympathetic character and even though she makes some big mistakes, she doesn’t make them in a va...more

Marcie has a wonderful life in Idaho, a group of quirky friends known as the leftovers and a hot emo rocker boyfriend. When her dad comes out of the closet and her parents split up, Marcie’s mom whisks her to New Hampshire for a longer stay than summer vacation. Love And Leftovers by Sarah Tregay deftly weaves themes such as love, lust, sexuality AND family issues flawlessly in free verse form.

Okay, this is the first novel in verse that I’ve read, and I had trouble with it at first. There wasn’t much imagery, and I had a hard time adjusting to the sparseness of words. I missed the lengthy descriptions. But when I was able to adjust, I found that I can picture the scenes in my head perfectly. Somehow...more

Love & Leftovers is about Marcie, a soon to be 16 year-old girl who has recently been uprooted from her home in Idaho after her parents have split up. Her father left her mother for a younger man and it’s left Marie and her mother devastated. Her mother, suffering from severe depression, takes off for their summer home in New Hampshire. Originally thinking this is only temporary; Marie starts to realize that they’re not going anywhere...more

I don't read a lot of verse novels, guys. I think the most prominent YA verse writer out there is definitely Ellen Hopkins, but I've just never gotten around to reading any of her books--you understand :D

Anyway, when I heard about Love & Leftovers, a contemporary romance in verse... the combination of the fast-moving element of poetry and the genre was really appealing to me at the time. With a great blurb from Lauren Myracle, "the mo...more

Oh, wow. Talk about a sleeper! Love and Leftovers took me by complete surprise. Being that it was written in verse, I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. I guess I thought the verses would be little separate stories that didn't necessarily tell a linear story, but it so does. Love and Leftovers was a complete, beautiful, full story told in these small, heartbreaking segments that completely drew me in.

The entire story is told from Marcie's point of view. The book is actually her poetry jo...more

Sadly it did not reach beyond my expectations

Even though the cover seems very very very lovely
And the title sounds interesting, too…
I have to announce that the book was a total disappointment.. -.-

In this universe there are no time machines, or keys that turn hearts back around. I wish there was.

I'm feeling emotional right now. I don't know what to say. I love this book, because I can somehow relate to it. With Linus, anyway. My parents are not divorced; my mom is not depressed, and my dad is not gay.

(view spoiler)[Linus, Marcie's emo boyfriend, is my favorite character. Young as I may be, before coming to America, I had a boyfriend. I always open my Facebook account to see if he was onl...more

Confession time: This was my first official novel in verse. I'm read bits and pieces of others but this was the first one that I read front to back. It was all right. I read it really fast, like 2 hours fast. It wasn't horrible, but I'm just not a fan of novels in verse.
Sidenote: Topic of sex is prevalent throughout, keep in mind when recommending.

I loved this book not because i identify with characters but because they feel real. I read the book in one afternoon; I was completely absorbed by it. Sure they are teenagers and they screw up and they learn with their mistakes just how it supposes too. It’s beautiful written and heart paced. It’s a treasure to keep in the shelves. I would read any book by Sarah Tregay at any time. but nothing quotes it better than:

I read my first verse book this summer and I have really learned to appreciate the writing style. If you have never read a book written in verse, don't be afraid for one, and Love & Leftovers is a really great one to start with. I loved, loved, loved this book! I read it straight through in one sitting (okay... I may have gotten up for a snack).

I stumbled upon this book by pure chance. I was looking for a poetry anthology and I stumbled upon this book and it said it was written in verse and viola! It caught my eye.

I am surprised by the giddy sense of happiness this book has left me in. It was unbelivably good. This is the first novel in verse I have read, but I sure as hell want to investigate and see if I like the general genre now after this one.

This story explores a lot of themes. Sexuality, teenage hormones, adoption, teenage pre...more

I picked up this book because I loved the back cover blurb about a girl being stuck at a summerhouse in New Hampshire because her mother doesn't have the courage to go home to Idaho, even though school is starting. Combined with the sweet and fun front cover, I was sold.

I was not until I got home that I opened the book and realized it was written in verse. I didn't want to read it anymore. But I did, and I read it in two days. I am amazed at how much can be conveyed in such short pages ... and I...more

Love and Leftovers: I picked this book up purely by chance – I would have never picked it up or rather not even come across it by myself if not for participating in this reading challenge – Novel in Verse – this year. The challenge mentioned this book as an example and I put it on hold at our local library. And once I started it, I found it to be a delight – reading a novel in verse does not detract from the story at all, instead I marveled at the ingenuity of the writer and how she wrote this w...more

I read a recommendation for this book over the weekend so I wanted to read it. I read it in about two-and-a-half hours so it's a very quick read. I'll admit, I'm not a fan of verse novels. I just don't really see the point of them. I really haven't read a verse novel that wouldn't be just the same or better in prose. I like seeing a bigger picture. However, I do like Ellen Hopkins's verse novels because the poems do so many interesting visual things on the page. But there wasn't anything too int...more

I picked up this book one night because I wanted a story that would really make me think about love. Even though this book didn't turn out to be quite what I was expecting, I still read it in one sitting and found it to be a very good story.

After her mother moves her across the country, Marcie has to begin to make a new life for herself in Hew Hampshire. Even though she misses her dad and her old friends, she can't help but find a connection with a boy in her new school. There's...more

Verse novels either fall into the brilliant category, or underexplored. With such a little word count, each word really has to be selected with caution for maximum meaning and effect. Ellen Hopkins is a master of the former. She manages to pull heartstrings within pages. Sarah Tregay's verse fell into the latter category. I connected with the character development of Marcie herself and what she wants in a relationship. I love that she recognized that physical chemistry is as important as an emot...more

When Marcie's father cheats on her mother with a man, Marcie's mom dragged her away from Idaho (and her cute emo-rocker boyfriend, Linus) to New Hampshire for the summer, except summer dragged onto the school year, and away from her friends ("The Leftovers" since they don't fit into any one group at school) and trying to cope with her mother's depression, Marcie makes friends with J.D. Except his friendship seems to come with a whole lot of benefits, and Marcie, thinking that maybe Linus didn't...more

I'll be honest, I've got mixed feelings about this one.

So let's start with the positives. I can't recall if I have previously read a novel written in verse, hence I've a strong suspicion Love and Leftovers is my first. And it was less painful - much less painful - than I thought it would be.

That makes me really glad and it's drummed up my confidence to try If I Stay soon. I've heard so many good review of that novel, I'm afraid I'm in for a big let-down if I end up not liking it. I've got to say...more

Good book, interesting format.

I was unable to empathize much with Marcie's relationship with JD even though she was in a difficult situation. I believe if the author had gone deeper I would have been able to feel more for the character. It was not because I did not understand and relate to her loneliness; I just knew it was wrong. It wasn't until after she returns to her hometown and has to explain her actions that I felt some empathy, and she understood and found redemption. It ended up being a...more

I was a little skeptical of this book, but upon seeing a positive review of it, thought I'd give it a go. I have to say, I'm impressed.

Despite the cute cover and catchy title, this is not a happy go lucky book. The tone is quite dark throughout.

The poetry is a little rough at first, and I have to admit that by "Long Shot" on pg 5, I almost put the book down. The poetry was weak, and a bit too forth coming for my tastes. But, I thought I'd let it go a little longer...

I'm so glad I did. The poetry...more

This makes me so giddy, I can't even stop myself from grinning the whole time I was reading this. This has become official that I love me some verse novels. I find it more full of emotions that left you needing more but at the same time with content.

I admit, this story makes me so happy I can't tear my eyes from the lines that I just finished it for 3 hours. Even that took a long time, I kept re-reading some of the lines. They're too "swoony" to miss. I am still smiling despite everything that'...more

Raised without television, I started writing my own middle grade novels after I had read all of the ones in the library. I later discovered YA books, but never did make it to the adult section. When I'm not jotting down poems at stoplights, I can be found hanging out with my "little sister" from Big Brothers Big Sisters or stressing over performance classes at a model horse show.
