I'm currently reading this book, but so far, only awesomeness is found in it's pages!! Strong alpha male protectors populate the book, each one better than the one before. Hildie wonderfully voices her heroine with compassion and emotion. Can't wait to see how it ends!!

Emma had done some things in her life that she wasn't exactly proud of... and trying to lure one of the Protectors away from safety and into the clutches of the demons was one of them. But, the demons had her sister, Briana, and not just any demon, but their cruel leader, Gerard. Briana was the only family Emma had left. She couldn't leave her to the demons, not even if Briana didn't listen. Not even if she was turned herself, Emma wouldn't or couldn't leave Briana to her fate. But, why did it have to be Cynden?

Cynden has been a Protector for nearly as long as he can remember. When the change came upon him, he had little choice of refusal. His brother, Kieran, struggled against the change, finally giving in to the inevitable. But, it was a good life, Cyn had done well, and he was still alive, him and Blue, his adopted son. He enjoyed what he did, demons were the bad guys, and if he could protect the humans, that much better. Until his life starts to lose focus, all because some woman wanders into his path, Emma, and her captured sister. Roderick, a former Protector and friend, is missing and it's ripping his wife, Rachel, apart.

Now, Emma tells Cyn, she knows where Roderick is, and it just happens to be with the demons. The ones holding her sister.

Desperate Betrayal by Hildie McQueen is an enchanting tale from it's beginnings. Emma becomes a Cyn stalker and an unwilling demon pawn, showing up when he least expects it. Only, he finds himself drawn to the woman, her eyes, his fingers itch to touch her hair and her body, her very scent drives his need. And it sends his Protector senses into heightened response. Life mate screams in his mind, but Protectors aren't allowed to take mates, which is what cost Roderick his place in the fold. Now, Roderick was gone with little hope of finding him, especially alive, and he can't even think it unless he wants Rachel to see it in his thoughts and actions. When Cyn can't leave Emma at the scene of a demon attack, he blindfolds her, drags her to his home on the back of his massive bike. Blue is delighted, but Cyn can't trust Blue's safety to anyone, and now Emma can't be released, not with Protector and his son's security at risk. His brother, Kieran, doesn't understand his need, but Cyn finds he does need Emma, in his life and his bed. When Emma tells him Roderick is being held captive by the demons, he must risk the tentative trust he's willing to give her, only to find betrayal in her heart.

Desperate Betrayal is exactly what the name implies, a desperate betrayal, one not willingly made or easily found. But demons control Emma's actions and she'll do what she has to, not only for her sister, but for the one who has stolen her heart, Cyn. What he sees as betrayal, she knows is sacrifice because she's willing to sell her life for his, even if he can't see it. She has to put an unfeeling tone in her voice, has to let Gerard take her lips in a demanding painful kiss. She only wants Cyn, and he only sees betrayal. No matter what else happens, Cyn must survive, and he only sees it with her sacrifice for Blue. Hildie McQueen gives us an excellent first novel, a story told with passion, desire, and need. When Cyn and Emma come together, the heat pours from the pages. This is the first book, and debut novel, of the Protectors series, and I can't wait to read Kieran's story, and I feel Fallon's may come too. So many great Protectors, so many potential stories to tell. Paranormal romance lovers, urban fantasy fans, and supernatural hero lovers will all want to give this one a try. It's a wonderful read, on my recommend list. Five out of five fairy kisses for this happy reader.(less)

Sometimes, the right book finds you at the right time. This was the case with Desparate Betrayal. I am not sure exactly what it was that originally drew me to this book, but the thing that made it special to me was the sense of family. This book is a "romance" novel, but the relationships between Emma and her sister and Cyn and his son were just as important as the developing relationship between Emma and Cyn. There were a few times in the book where I felt like I missed a first book in a series and started on book two, but I think that was because I wanted more info than the author wanted us to have at the time. I tend to be impatient like that.

Here are some of the things I really liked about this book:

* Seeing the relationship between Cyn and his Son just warmed my heart. I am not sure if it was the situation that led to him becoming his father or the way they communicated that touched me, but to me it was one of the highlights of the book.

* Emma's relationship to her sister, while not the kind of relationship we strive for was one that seemed real. We really understood Emma's motivations throughout the book because of this relationship. It could have easily fallen into a chiched (yes, I tried to change the part of speech of cliche) mess, but Hildie did a great job making the relationship relatable and authentic.

* The lore of the protectors combined things I was familiar with, but added new elements, making it a fun new world to explore.

* It was a fun read! Yes, it is a simple as that. I liked it because it was fun and made me happy when I needed to read happy :).

* Emma and Cyn really did seem to belong together even with the original set up of betrayal. It did not seemed forced to get the story where it needed to go.

I really did enjoy this book and will definitely be reading more books from this series as they are published. The lore is fun and the way Hildie explores relationships really connected with me. This is not a book for the under 18 crowd. There is some violence and some descriptive scenes of adult fun. I am really looking forward to where the story goes from here!

I would like to start out with this was one of those books I loved so much that I am going to try really hard to keep the gushing and squeee'in to a minimum :0)

The story will grab you from the start! There is action, suspense and major sexiness!! The world Hildie has created is well thought out and amazing! The story is very engaging and it's a definite page turner. I really couldn't put it down.

Desperate Betrayal is one of those books you just can’t put down. It is set in Atlanta, GA and takes the reader into a dark urban world where demons and guardians battle for the greater good. Hildie McQueen does an excellent job connecting the reader with the characters, so much so that the hero and heroine will be haunting you weeks after you finish the book.

The mating rules of the Protectors have never been a problem for Cyn. While he has a voracious appetite for women, it’s rare that any one woman can hold his interest passed a third orgasm. Furthermore, he’s hit a dry spell, a mixed blessing of sorts because he has lots of other problems that need his attention. His Protector friend, Roderick Cronan, was recently been abducted. The demon father of Cyn’s adopted son is making noise about wanting custody. The demon population in Atlanta is growing bigger and bolder. The last thing he needs is girl trouble.

So, when Emma Blake approaches him a) knowing who he is, b) knowing what he is, and c) begging for his help to free her sister from a high-level demon strong-hold, he turns her down flat. There are enough demons to deal with on the street. He doesn’t intend to walk into a nest of them to rescue a woman who he is certain is already dead. Emma is persistent, but even after she tells him that Roderick is being held in the same compound, he continues to refuse.

Still, Cyn wants to believe her. He doesn’t want to accept that Roderick is dead, or that the man’s wife and son will be without him, so Cyn does commit to a rescue. Julian commits several other Protectors to the mission, including Cyn’s cranky brother Kieran, and pretentious Lord Fallon Trent. Cyn is a man who understands the value of keeping friends close and enemies closer, so Emma remains close at hand, but out of earshot of the mission plans. It unnerves Cyn that he’s drawn to the woman, even while sensing there’s something off about her, even while suspecting that he can’t trust her, even while knowing that she is going to betray him.

That something is a big deal. Emma is half-demon, born to a human mother and a demon father. And while the story about her sister is true (as she knows it), it’s also a trap to lure Cyn to a master demon named Gerard. Julian is holding another master demon captive. Gerard is sure that two of the world’s most powerful Protectors will suffice for a prisoner exchange. Even though Cyn knows the moment of truth is coming, when Emma finally does betray him, it cuts him deep.

In Desperate Betrayal, Hildie McQueen balances a series of betrayals against a theme of trust and forgiveness. It is hard to let our loved ones go, but that burden can be impossible to bear when that person is all that remains of your family. Cyn is lucky among the Protectors to have a brother who shares his calling and immortal gifts. He can step into her shoes and ask himself if he could sacrifice his brother for the sake of a lover, but forgiveness can be another burden impossible to bear and his does not come easily. McQueen lets the emotions of the events play out naturally, rebuilding a relationship between Cyn and Emma amidst the manifestations of one demon’s lust for power and other’s greed.

Desperate Betrayal is an action-packed novel with steamy sex and a tense atmosphere that lives up to its title. It also moments of unnerving brashness and incredible sweetness. The story of Atlanta’s demon hunters continues with Desperate Surrender, which focuses on Cyn’s brother Kieran and Wendy, a human he saved years ago. I would sincerely recommend this book (and series) to fans of Lynn Rush’s Wasteland series, Jean Murray’s Soul Reborn, and SyFy’s Lost Girl audience.(less)

I adored the unabashed scrumptious male characters; though I will say that they were yummy, the female characters had depth and charisma as well. He hears her story of her sister being held hostage by demons with no intent to get involved but when she informs him of a Protector being held there as well, the situation becomes much more urgent. Emma is keeping a secret from Cyn though, she and her sister are half demon and the only way to get her sister back is to hand over Cyn.

Hildie McQueen made the bold statement that she intends to run with the big dogs when she released this book. Outstanding! Whenever I review a new author it’s a crap shoot, sometimes it’s snake eyes, most of the time you wind up breaking even but once or twice a year you hit it big. Hildie McQueen just broke the house. If this world she’s created with her Protectors and demons don’t beat all (yes, the redneck slipped out) then I’m just one of the biggest idiots alive because I freaking LOVED it!!! The story was tight and fast paced, the characters were extremely well developed and multi-dimensional, and the romance was steamy, sensual and very well balanced. How many times have I ranted because a character did something stupid or sleazy and got off without paying enough for it? At least a thousand, right. It’s one of my biggest gripes. Not in this book, justice is served and I enjoyed every bite. It’s all about BALANCE. And each element in this book was perfectly weighed and measured. The drama, the humor, the treachery and the heartache all expertly combined into a literary feast that I just couldn’t walk away from. I know I’m gushing but just take a look at Cyn, he’s blonde (OMG), he’s big, he has fangs and he’s an effing Scot who has adopted and raised a half demon boy. Good lord, he’s just perfect! And he has…. a BROTHER!! Get this book and get it now. It is just too good to miss. (less)

For me, this was a very different sort of book. I don’t normally read paranormal, but I loved it. The storyline is completely unique. I think the whole idea Protectors is brilliant. Although initially Cyn refuses to help Emma, stating he doesn't do rescue missions, he eventually decides to help her. Cyn, an immortal warrior, has the ability to read minds but he can't read Emma's, at least not all of the time. He can tell she is more than simply human but he doesn't know exactly what she is and he doesn't trust her. He has a feeling that Emma is lying to him and that this rescue mission is nothing more than a trap. However, Cyn develops strong feelings for her. And Emma falls in love with him, which makes it that much harder to go through with her plans to betray him to save her sister.

Let me just start out by saying that I found this story of demons and protectors interesting. Both the demons and the protectors have fangs and they both drink blood. The demons need the blood to survive, much like a vampire, but they are not vampires. But the protectors do not need the blood to survive and generally only drink blood from their life-mates. It's because the demons are feeding from humans, and more often that not killing them as a result, that the Protectors are after them. There was quite a bit of action scenes in this, as you might expect with Protectors fighting off demons. And, of course, there is the romance aspect of the book which I enjoyed. Also, something that I totally loved was that there is sort of a flashback scene going back about 300 years to Scotland, where Cyn and his brother Kieran were born, adding a Historical element to this modern day story. You learn a little about how the transformation into becoming a Protector manifests itself.

Now although I did enjoy the story and would be happy to read more, after all, there are some things that have yet to be resolved by the end of this book, making way for the next installment, I have to admit that I was a little bit disappointed. Now I can't say too much, or it might spoil the story, but there were a couple of events that took place that I thought were resolved way too easily. Plus I did find a good number of mistakes in the book. The errors didn't ruin the reading of the story for me but I did find myself getting a bit frustrated once or twice. Perhaps if I were to read it a second time, that wouldn't be the case.

Overall I liked Desperate Betrayal and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys books of this genre!

Cynden "Cyn" Fraser is one such man. Born three centuries ago in Scotland, he undergone the transformation and took the oath to become a Protector, and is now assigned to keep the demonic at Atlanta at bay. He was slaying a group of demons in an alley one day when Emma walked into the scene. She has been looking for him for quite some time now. Her sister's been held hostage by the Supreme demon, Gerard, and he wants Emma to lure Cyn into his den. Briana's all Emma has left, and so she agrees to this bargain.

Emma is a half-demon, borne of a high-level demon for a father and a human mother, and so naturally, she keeps her heritage a secret when she first confronts Cyn, afraid that it will incite a negative response from him. Cyn refuses to help her the first time, something about his senses tells him that something about her is amiss, and his immediate attraction to her isn't helping matters either. But the second time Emma manages to find him, he caves in to her request.

As Cyn and Emma sets out to track her sister down, sparks fly, but many treacheries and betrayals abound at the same time. It's hard to trust each other, but it's hard to refuse each other too. Worse still, survival at this point is not certain, put into account all the other lives that they are risking... They're in it big this time.

My Thoughts
Well, that was an awfully long summary. Lol, that aside, I must say that DESPERATE BETRAYAL's main fous seemed to centre around the romance between Cyn and Emma. Not that it was a bad thing, far from it, being the romance-junky that I am. In a way, the PROTECTORS series resembles the BDB series by J.R. Ward. Each instalment in the series is the story of one of the "brothers". Lots of action, but with a larger dose of romance.

Emma is the type of woman everyone wants to be - smart, loyal, beautiful (apparently, this is a prominent trait of hers as many of the boys seem to take note of this point), courageous, stronger than and not fully human, but not fully demon with a compassionate heart. She gave her all in saving her sister, even gave up her love life. Cyn on the other hand, is a tall, intimidating Protector who was fiercely protective, and not only was he skilled on the battlefield, but in bed too. He may appear cold and indifferent on the outside, but he's actually quite the passionate guy when they get down and dirty. Even though it was more of a lust-at-first-sight relationship, they did make a really cute and sweet pair.

As far as the plot goes, it was not bad. One thing I can say about it is, it doesn't drag. The first part of the book flowed smoothly, and I thought the character development and all were done really well, but it detoriated a little as we get to the end. There was one part where the whole scene got rather confusing, and the sentences became a little abrupt. Even though McQueen's style of writing changed at the end, I was still hooked to its pages. I think I can safely say I finished DB within two sittings. :)

I actually got the review copy of DB for its blog tour late, so I'm only reviewing it now, but it was really good! I'm tending more towards romance than action now (but not so far as to go for contemp romance with no action at all whatsoever), so if you're like me, you may want to try DB out. I'd say that DESPERATE BETRAYAL is a mix between the BDB series and the Curse of Gremdon by Ciara Knight. So if you're a fan of either one, you might like to try this out too. :)(less)

But Emma saved Blue from dying by running right into the way. It almost killed her, but she lucky survived. Two weeks go by that she has not seen Cyn and when she finally sees him again, he asks her to marry him. She tells him yes and then they face Julian the leader of all the Protectors. Kieran is Cyn's brother who is also a Protector. Then one night Emma made a dinner for two and before Cyn comes over Wendy stops by, she asks Emma if she told Cyn that she was pregnant yet. Emma did not believe that she was pregnant. She ended up telling Cyn that she might be pregnant after there wedding ceremony. He took her out to go and get some pregnancy test, he had her take them as soon as they got home. He was so happy that they came back positive. Cyn then gets called to duty and Emma gets a call from her sister. It was a trap set up by Gerard to kill both Brianna and Emma at the same time. Brianna ended up dying at the hands of another demon and Emma was saved by Cyn's brother Kieran. Emma ended up going and living with Cyn and Blue at his house.
I know that I enjoyed this book immensely and cannot wait to see what happens to Cyn, Emma, and the baby she is carrying. I am pretty sure that you are going to enjoy this book as well. Hildie McQueen really knows how to capture her audience's attention and keep it caught, even through the hot and spicy parts. Those were described excellantly, very detailed that is. Emma and Cyn are fantastic characters in a riveting story. Oh. My. Gosh. I'd put this up on my shelf with Kresley Cole, that's how much I loved this story. It's hot, the characters' attraction for each other tangible and steaming; yet you know from the start, Emma's going to betray him (Well, it IS in the title, so it wasn't really a spoiler-spill). Desperate Betrayal is book 1 in The Protectors series. I sat down and read this book in 1 day. The plot moves along at a fast pace, the romance is hot and heavy and doesn't let down, and the world Mrs. McQueen has created is unique and I can't wait to read more about it.

I loved this story. Cyn is very, very sexy. He's the perfect Protector and hero- strong and loving. I loved the idea of him being a single dad and doing a great job of raising his son. Emma is a loyal and smart half demon. Above all else she values her family and thus the Desperate Betrayal. The romance is very good. Emma manages to flip Cyn off his game a few times!

Hildie writes hot love scenes that leave you wanting to read more.

Desperate Betrayal is a winner! The story grabs hold and you can't put the book (or Kindle) down until you are finished.

Emma is half demon and in desperate need of help. She turns to Cynden, a male Protector and killer of demons to save her sister. Cynden knows there is something 'different' about Emma, but he's not sure what it is. He only knows that he doesn't trust her.

If this book is ever edited properly (I got 10% into it and couldn't look past the numerous sentence fragments, poor wording choices, strange stilted dialogue and awful punctuation) I will give it another shot. For now, I'm putting it down. Really, it reads like a rough draft. I read those enough for work, don't care to do that when I'm reading for pleasure. If I had a red pen on my reader, it would have run dry with just the amount I read.

This first book in the Protector Series is fast paced and full of action. I was intrigued by the premise of a heroine that is part demon. I have not come across that in a lot of books. I’ve stepped out of my regular realm of reads with Hildie McQueen’s Desperate Betrayal and I’m so glad I did. Normally I’m a Young Adult fan, and well, it’s been awhile since I’ve picked up anything other. I was pleasantly surprised with the depth these characters had. Mrs. McQueen got it perfect between the super hunky men, to the charming woman. Each page was filled with excellent prose, tension, romance, and action! This is a winner in my books and a recommended read for anyone.

Desperate Betrayal is one of those books that sucks you in from the first action packed page and doesn't relinquish its hold until the very end. Ms. McQueen does an exemplary job of bringing her characters to life and giving each (even the secondary ones) a unique voice.
If you like action spiced with just the right amount of sex, this is just the book you've been looking for.

Shelves: angels-demons

I love series books that surround a bunch of males with ties and a common goal. LOVE them (BDB, MB) and now The Protector series. If you're looking for that next series, I recommend that you read this book. It has it all action, romance, heat, conflict, and hot males that you need to satisfy your day :-)
