This story was about Elizabeth, a human who owns a store on the edge of Shiftertown and it gets robbed. What she doesn't know if while this is going on Ronan is behind watching this happen. Ronan is a Bear Shifter, and I gotta tell you I fell in love with this guy! Well the man who robbed her store is a member of a gang and soon the gang tries to threaten her and Ronan.

A few years ago (sometime between 2007 and 2009), I ran across The Immortals Series in the library and although it took a while to hunt them all down in both libraries and bookstores, I think I managed to read them all. This is when I was first introduced to Jennifer Ashley (aka Allyson James/ Ashley Gardner) and I immediately fell in love.

This is when I was first introduced to Jennifer Ashley (aka Allyson James/ Ashley Gardner) and I immediately fell in love.

Bodyguard is book 2.5 in the Shifters Unbound series. I enjoyed both of the other books in the series so far, Pride Mates and Primal Bonds, but a lot has happened since March and I had initially forgot about the Shifters in Shiftertown until I actually started reading Bodyguard.

I don’t really have anything bad to say about this story, but if I had to nitpick I’d say it’s a little bit frustrating to have Ronan’s past “almost mating” brought up, but that isn’t talked out, a complication to the plot, or even referred to in thought at any further time in the story. Why was it mentioned if it wasn’t significant to his character or the development of the plot?

That said, I forgot about it while reading the story and it didn’t bother me until I started writing the review. I like how much action the story had and how complicated and strong of a character Elizabeth was throughout the story because of it. I also enjoyed the way that such a strong, multi-faceted hero was able to deal with the complications in his heroines’s past and how completely unpushy he was. You don’t see that often of males in paranormal and history romances — there is often a much greater inner conflict and overbearing attitude in such heroes, but Ronan seems to take everything in stride.

All of the characters in this series are well developed and that’s part of what makes the series so enjoying to read. I love getting small glimpses of characters and the excitement that follows waiting on more stories to delve further into their lives.

If you’re a fan of historical romances I highly recommend the Highland Pleasures Series featuring the Mackenzies, also by Jennifer Ashley.

Elizabeth, a human, meets Ronan, a Kodiac bear-shifter, when he saves her from being robbed and then murdered at her store.

In the books by Jennifer Ashley shifters are known about by humans but almost universally distrusted and "collared" by Fae magic, to keep them from showing aggression of any kind. Ronan is a bear shifter from Shiftertown. 20 years earlier, the government forced all shifters collared and relocated to towns where they would not bother and anger the humans. But discrimination is ugly whether you are human or shifter, and forcing them into areas once littered by garbage and debris was punishment for existing. And Ronan has taken it upon himself to house many of the unmated and young shifters without family or anyone to look after. With his extended family of shifters, Ronan knows what it is like to be alone in a room full of people. But finding Elisabeth Chapman facing a gun, enraged the protective instincts of the bear within, and he soon found himself shackled before a judge for the attempt on the gang member’s life.

Freedom has its’ costs, but keeping Elisabeth and her sister Mabel safe, was Ronan’s first priority. Knowing the gang would not stop, Ronan anointed himself Elisabeth’s bodyguard and protector for as long as the gang was still a threat. And there were internal threats as well. Those in charge of Shiftertown knew Elizabeth had a secret, and they were not going to allow Elizabeth to bring any more problems into their small community of shifters and their mates. But Ronan’s bear wanted more –he wanted a mate- and Elizabeth was his to claim. And as a mate-claimed female, Elizabeth would be protected by everyone in Shiftertown and therefore she would no longer be perceived as a threat.

When the gang members made it known that they would not tolerate shifters or Elizabeth’s interference, Ronan agreed to a compromise –of sorts. Shifter fights were illegal, but what the authorities did not know, did not hurt-except those that were left dead or maimed. Agreeing to fight at the local fights, Ronan had no idea what he was about to face. But Elizabeth’s past was about to catch up and it was during the fights that Ronan would finally learn what it was like to be truly loved and part of something bigger.

BODYGUARD is a great novella in Jennifer Ashley’s Shifter Unbound series. The attraction between Elizabeth and Ronan was not readily apparent, because there wasn’t any of the relationship angst. Ronan was nothing but a gentle (bear) where it involved his mate, and his was willing to take everything slow, although the mating frenzy would soon catch up. The character development was smooth. I liked that Jennifer included some of the Shiftertown background premise in the storyline allowing for new readers some semblance of fluidity. Many novels cannot be read as stand-alone, but when the author includes pertinent background information, it is a bonus for everyone especially the new reader to any series. I am looking forward to Jennifer’s next novel in the Shifter Unbound series.

Fun novella from Jennifer Ashley's Shifters Unbound series. This is the story of the Kodiak bear shifter Ronan and the young human Elizabeth Chapman. Elizabeth owns a tiny boutique outside of Shiftertown that was featured in the two earlier books in the series (Pride Mates and Primal Bonds). As one of the few human business owners that will serve shifters, Ronan happens to be in her store to stop a robbery and that kicks off the action.

I've had a soft spot for Ronan since Primal Bonds, but now I am officially in love. LOL.
Ronan is such a sweet and caring guy. The fact that he looks after all those cubs made him even more adorable. I Really wish that Jennifer Ashley had used Ronan as one of the main books in this series. With a little bit more page time they could have been incredible (this story was a good length, I'm just being greedy).

Being the foster father for bear cubs left on their own, Ronan already has his hands full. The feisty Elizabeth though needs his help and with the mate claim upon him, he vows to keep her safe at any cost. Getting her to understand is another problem entirely. Ronan isn’t interested in a few nights, he wants forever. Elizabeth needs to trust him if he is ever to win her heart.

I was so excited when I saw the Pride Mates series had a novella out! Though to be honest, for a novella, this is quite long. However, since I am in love with this series, that didn’t matter to me at all! Ronan has made a few short appearances in the last two books, and I was intrigued them, so I am glad he got his own book. There is just something about bear shifters that I love. Dare I say they might be my favorite? Everyone loves a teddy bear right? These men are generally loners (hello, bears don’t travel in packs because they are bad ass and don’t need to), they want their space. They are big and can roar and tower over the biggest of the big cats. When you get them alone though, they are soft spoken and totally gentle and a girl just wants to say “awwww”. Ronan was no exception to any of these standards….and he was more. Oh so much more. I loved his instant devotion to Elizabeth and how he felt he needed to protect her when he knew virtually nothing about her. His affection and devotion carried over to his role of foster father to the misplaced bear cubs he had taken in and was caring for. He was lonely despite his surroundings and recognizing a mate in Elizabeth, his protection instincts quickly took over. Eerily calm at all times, he was scary and large and just a guy I fell in love with a bit myself.

I found Elizabeth to be a flawed character even though I did like her. She had run away from a bad relationship in her past and had essentially erased her identity. I found it hard to believe that a man with as many connections as her ex had, couldn’t figure out where she was all this time. Especially since the thug Julian found her out within days. I did like her protective notion as far as her sister went and thought her and Ronan were very much alike in that aspect. But, at times Elizabeth came off more as a controlling parent and less like a loving sister. She was very hard to warm up to people because of her foster home upbringing and I got that, but I wanted her to put her trust in Ronan and the shifters earlier then she did. Up until she made the decision to love Ronan, she was just completely mistrusting. Her pit pocketing ability was a quirky habit I enjoyed in her character and read well with her upbringing. Even though she was standoffish the majority of the book, I did enjoy her internal dialogue and her thought processing of the shifters. Her snarky comments were well timed and I enjoyed her personality.

Bodyguard is a great addition to the Pride Mates series and I am so glad I took the time to read it!

Elizabeth is one of the few shop owners who lets shifters shop in her store. This story was so much fun to read, a lot of that was due to Ronan, he makes me want to find my very own bear shifter. I loved that right away he was protective of Elizabeth, that as an acquaintance he did what he could to stop her from being robbed and killed. Of course all of this lead to Elizabeth hiding away in Shiftertown, being protected by them all. Being human, Elizabeth, had her eyes opened about Shifters.

I seriously loved Ronan! Liam is still my favorite from this series but Ronan is #2 for me. Elisabeth was perfect for him. I wish the story was longer cause I could read about him for a long time and not get bored.

It's been a while since I was in Shiftertown but before I finished the first chapter it was like there had been no time at all as Ronan, the gentle, fiercely protective giant Kodiak found another to protect in the form of Elizabeth Chapman from a would be murderous robber. Ronan stops the robber by disarming him and using minimal defensive behavior to stop the attack but now has to navigate the legal system to retain his freedom. Elizabeth can't have that be a payment for him surely saving her life and assists any way she can.

The romance is more of the backdrop than the focal point for this installment as repercussions in the form of threats and danger from the notorious gang leader. It isn't forgotten as Elizabeth's past is similar to the displaced shifters and she finds she isn't so different from them after all. Ronan, whose presence and gentleness has been noted in the previous books gets to preen in the spotlight and not let his Alpha-ness overpower the Kodiak we've already used to. The shifters band together to support their own and those they feel responsible for; more is learned about the rare (for this world) Bear shifters and the set-up for (hopefully) the next installment is expertly woven through.

This easy to get into series easily navigates the shaky and contentious human/shifter world and is a valid metaphor for prejudice without being preachy or heavy-handed. Also there is much to like in this series as the writing style is very good as is the overall plot - while utilizing the same adversaries varies the situation enough to keep each story unique as they build upon each other to create a complete world. now that the other types of shifters are being explored, its moving away from the key family unit, but those characters still play a role and the interaction is clearly understood and even expected. The characters are fully fleshed and layered enough to appreciate the differences of each an ensuring that you are well aware which set or subset of characters is currently spotlighted. The multiple villains were sufficiently malicious with enough commonly held traits to be believably terrifying as their nefarious schemes were revealed.

I enjoy the comfort of being with friends and this world is a very pleasant place to be

A novella that was a very interesting and engaging paranormal tale and one I enjoyed a lot. Elizabeth is the kind of woman who has come out of a hurtful and emotionless upbringing, putting her life on the line many times to protect her younger sister. After finishing book 2.5 in Jennifer Ashley's Shifters Unbound series I can't wait for book 3! Jennifer Ashley has created a wonderful, yet disturbing, world where shifters are known to humans. Don't we just love shifters? This novella makes me feel the need to go buy a big stuffed bear and hug it!

We met Ronan in Primal Bonds, Book 2 of the Shifters Unbound Series. It was superb for him to get his own little snippet and then for the author to introduce the other bears in his house. side note who else hopes Olaf gets a book later on?

Elizabeth won me over from the get go with her survival instinct and tenacity. And as much as the book is about her, Ronan is the star of the show.

The story was okay, but personally, I just didn't "get" the connection between Elizabeth and Ronan. I think this was a .5 novella, so maybe it was just used to introduce some characters &/or educate readers about Shiftertown, but I just didn't get it. A lot of people love this series so I borrowed it, and I have another (Hard Mated) that I borrowed still to read, so I'm holding my opinion back about my personal preference for this series until I give it another chance. The combination of angsty worldbuilding and OTT cheeseball storytelling doesn't really work for me. Add in sloppy editing mistakes and forget it.

I really enjoyed book one in this series - the world building was great and the characters and romance were believable and fun. This series is fantastic. I love how the author creates their world with so many layers. A race bound because of their biology and the fear of the ruling forces. Or are they truly as caged as their enslavers believe them to be? Even if they hide their true power and resources, why should they have to do so? A question that keeps occurring in our real world. The spirit of the shifters in light of all the discrimination they suffer is beautiful. They also maintain their sense of humor and irony.

I had this one on my long list of cheap Kindle buys and finally blew the dust off and read it. I hardly ever read a series out of order but I fully expected to not want to invest in the whole series, so I started with this shorter, cheaper book/novella featuring my favorite flavor of shifter--a bear.

I have read the first two books in this series and the twist the author puts on her shifter stories are refreshing. This is why I didn't hesitate to read this book. I love stories that center around bear shifters-I mean they are huge, ferocious, protective, and sexy.

I love the Shifter's Unbound series so I woke up early this morning to download and read this novella. Other than stopping to refill my coffee I could not put it aside. I've been looking forward to Ronan's story and Bodyguard was everything I wanted and more.

Ronan is a Kodiak bear Shifter and foster dad to a house full of bear cubs. He spent the majority of his life alone and though he has the respect and friendship of his fellow Shifters, he's never known love. Due to the small amount of female Shifters, Ronan feels he will never have a mate.

Elizabeth is a human novelty shop owner with a past she'd love to forget. All she wants is to run her shop in peace and protect her little sister. One night while at the store a thug comes in and robs her. Ronan was in the store and rescued her. Due to Shifter Law, Ronan is arrested and surprised that Elizabeth would defend him. He is drawn to her and knows that with the robber being a gang member Elizabeth will not be safe until he's taken care of. He decides to become Elizabeth's bodyguard.

There were so many things I loved about this novella. The chemistry between Ronan and Elizabeth was great. Though a huge Kodiak bear, Ronan is gentle, sweet and kind; I couldn't get enough of him. I really liked Elizabeth and her very open-minded little sister. Getting to meet Liam and Kim's little bundle of joy was great and it was nice to see how things have progressed for Sean and Andrea. Thing I loved most? Spike. I was thrilled to get more of him. He is by far my favorite of the Shifters and it was cool to get a little more insight into his life and personality. I'm really curious to see what Jennifer Ashley has planned for him.

If you are a fan of the Shifters Unbound series you will love Ronan's story. Can't wait for the release of book three, Wildcat, in January.(less)
