HUNTING KAT is a short-story that continues from Kelley Armstrong’s online novella KAT that can be found on the author’s website. Part of the Darkest Powers/Darkness Rising series and originally published in the anthology Kisses From Hell, Hunting Kat is a stand-alone story focusing on 16year old Katiana (Kat) a supernatural being who has been genetically altered and has only come into some of her powers in the previous 6 months. Told from Kat’s POV, Hunting Kat is a very quick read.

Kat and her guardian Marguerite have been on the run for over 11 years. As part of the Edison Project run by the Cabals, Kat was genetically altered so that when she reached maturity, the supernatural part of her DNA would be enhanced. What Kat did not know was that she was a hereditary vampire. Six months ago, a fatal gunshot to the chest would find her in the city morgue without a heartbeat or breath but alive, none-the-less. Now six months later, she and Marguerite were heading to New York to meet other vampires. But taking the car for a morning coffee run was not on the original agenda, and Kat soon found herself the victim of a hit and run and her would-be rescuers knew exactly whom they had found.

Waking up in a small holding cell, Kat was not alone. Two additional captives approximately Kat’s age were also in the cell, claiming to be part of the original Edison Project as well. But someone was lying about his true identity and Kat was not sure who would be more dangerous. Transported to another location, the trio soon devised a plan to break out and escape, only to find themselves facing off against each other. When Kat finally realizes that she has made an error in judgment she will be forced to do the one thing that Marguerite has forbidden her to do-feed from a human source. And in the end, an unlikely friendship will develop between two lost souls who are slowly finding their out the truth about what happened over 11 years ago.

HUNTING KAT is an interesting and cute story. I would recommend reading KAT –the online prequel found at Kelley’s website. Some of Kat’s backstory and change is revealed and would help alleviate any questions the reader may have. HUNTING KAT is considered a stand-alone yet still part of the Darkest Powers series of novels. If you are a fan of Kelley Armstrong, you can’t go wrong with this short story.

Hunting Kat is a short story set in Armstrong's world of the Darkest Powers and Darkness Rising series; and tells the story of "Kat", a 16 year old recently turned vampire who is being hunted by The Edison Group. Overall I found the story a quick, easy read (yeah, it's only 40 pages) and enjoyed Kat's character. The reason for the two star rating is that I believe I read this story before (although I can't remember where), and therefore found it predictable. However, I think readers who have not...more

When I first received Hunting Kat, I was disappointed with the length as I didn't realize it was a short story. Then, as the story began, I was saddened because it was another book about vampires. Vampires aren't my favorite supernatural creature.

I persevered as I do enjoy Kelley Armstrong's writing. There was a gruesome incident and I was intrigued! I was curious as to the motives behind the accident.

I don't know why it took me so long to discover Kelley Armstrong! Last year I read The Gathering and I was very excited about it. It was fun, the main character was more than likeable, there was wild nature, animals, Native American legends, just everything I like! I bought The Summoning and also Bitten, and I can't wait to read them, but first I'm going to read The Calling.

Kat has been a vampire now for six month, because of the genetic experimentations of Edison group she doesn’t know if she’ll continue to age or not. She doesn’t really know anything about what will happen to her now. She is on her way to a vampire meeting in New York with Marguerite when she is run off the road and kidnapped by bounty hunters planning to return her to Edison Group. Once there she meets Chad and Neil who are supposedly kids that were also part of the vampire experiment. But are Chad and Neil all that they seem or are they just as dangerous as her captors?

This was definitely a better story than Kat was, again told in a first person narrative from Kat’s point of view, it offered a much better story arc than the first story. While the story did include some background thoughts from Kat it was mostly an action packed story about a kidnapping that in my opinion included a much fuller story arc than Kat’s first story. The plot was interesting and at points slightly unexpected, but again I don’t really see how this enhances the Darkest Powers series unless we’ll see Kat in future full length works which would be nice. Personally I’d love to see a full length first person narrative with alternative view points between Kat, Chloe, Maya and maybe some of the other major series characters like Derek, Daniel and Rafe. Not sure if I’ll ever get my wish of a story like that but I can keep my fingers crossed and hope right? We gain some emotional insight about how Kat feels about being a vampire and a slightly exciting short story in this novella, but at this point again I don’t see how this benefits the series as a whole. The story does offer the beginnings of a teen love story but doesn’t offer any follow through for that which is slightly disappointing, but what can be expected of a short story right?

Character development for Kat in this novella was much better than the first in my opinion. Probably because Kat offered more of a depth of emotion in this story than she did the first. I still wouldn’t call her a fully developed character, but it’s a short story so I don’t really expect that. Marguerite was distinctive in this novel, but she was mostly built through what Kat told us about her rather than actual interaction with her. Neil and Chad were semi developed and distinctive again not really fully developed. The remaining characters in the story were just background character not important enough to even have name.

Overall it’s an interesting story that you might enjoy reading, but it’s at this point not really necessary to the Darkest Powers Series as to my knowledge Kat doesn’t appear in any works outside of these stories. (less)

I wouldn't spend much time pursuing this short story - the majority of the plot is really teasers to her novel series. Nothing too dramatic happens either (as this needs to be saved for said series)

There is a couple of twists, however in a short story there isn't really enough established, to consider unexpected events to be real 'twists'

All in all Hunting Kat, should really be a chapter from a novel, not a considered a story in itself. If you are a fan grab Armstrong's novels, don't bother with...more

Now this is Kelley Armstrong, y'all! Wonderful piece, really, reminded me so much of The Summoning that I just wanted to scream in happiness. I felt much closer to Kat, and Neil reminded me of Derek in a strange yet great way.

That's the thing about this author's writing; it always leaves you with a good taste, or like you've just experienced something big. Oh, how I've missed her writing.

This was a good but short story and the reason for 3 stars is that reason and because the characters are just there. The reader doesn't know anything about them except that Kay has been part of an experiment by the Edison Group. I understand that this is part of the Darkest Powers/Darkness Gathering series but I don't know if there is more of these characters or not, but all of this said, it is a good short story to kill time with and will keep the readers interest, as do most if not all of Ms A...more

Immediately after I finished reading Kat I started reading Hunting Kat. I was really curious how Kat would adapt to her new lifestyle being a vampire. But this story is about much more!
Hunting Kat was very fun to read, as it was well-written and I fell in love with her character in the very beginning. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that this book was way too short..

Nice little delve into the Edison Group plotline. I do like how every "lead girl" is a different. Chloe is still my favorite by far. And to that point - so is Derek..

I'd prefer to see more of them in the future. I'd trade in the Darkness Rising series in a second for 3 more Darkest Powers stories.

But - for this. I liked it. Armstong is awesome at YA novels.

I have read Kelley Armstrong's trilogy Darkness Rising and this book is part of it but can be read as a stand-alone. Kat has been part of the experiments that the Edison group had done and she is being hunted by them...

A good short novel, kind of reminded me what I've already read and I really enjoyed this.

I really like reading about the conspiracy with the Edison group, this short gave us another take with a different brand of supernaturals. Kat was smart when she got taken. I liked that she realized all was not what it seemed.

As I have stated in previous reviews, I have difficulty writing a review on a Kelley book without sounding gushy. I adore Kelley's writing style and her ability to write fantastic characters. Kat is no different, she died earlier than she thought she would but, with the help of her vampire guardian, she's dealing with it.

Even in a really short story, Kelley manages to draw you in and keep you interested. The good thing with Hunting Kat is, it gives you a little taste of the Darkness Rising world...more

This was a fun short story set in the Darkest Powers world. Kat has escaped the Edison Group only to be captured by bounty hunters...

Kat is a fun heroine and I really liked Neil too... I hope we'll see them more in a Darkest Powers novel!! :)

If you're a fan of the YA series, you should check this one out!
