Set in South Africa in the 1800s, Sand is a sweeping epic that follows the life, loves and adventures of feisty heroine Catherine de Jonghe, who arrives in Cape Town as a young woman and travels into the country's beautiful, but often dangerous Kalahari Desert together with her new husband Claes and the man she loves, Baptiste. Their journey soon leads them into bitter and bloody conflict, not only with each other, but with the Korana tribe that occupies the area.

Recommends it for: Anyone who loves African fiction.
Shelves: south-africa
A work of fiction though the historical background is factual. Three brave young settlers fight for existence against warring Korana and the British Government. The story is set in the Cape Colony in the 1870's.

An excellent, well researched book which you will love if Africa is in your blood....
