Those who have dealt with bureaucracy atleast once in India will know all the nuances of the word Frustration. Aravind Adiga I am told has written about it & numerous movies highlight the degree of corruption in India. Yet we go on, unaffected and non chalant we walk into these spider webs again and again.

Malayattoor Ramakrishnan was a senior administrator with the Government of India for over and above a decade. All his skills of observation are clear as the morning sunlight in your eyes w

A page turner, where service story painted using true colours in Malayatoor's own canvas. Adjustments, Negotiations, betrayals, complex and ego among bureaucrats is given life using good characters. All emotions is been mixed well to prepare a perfect salad. Starting with Balachandran's inferiority complex, his journey through his IAS training days protraits what all a young officer have to face early in his service.... What happens when bureaucrats bends their spine to please the govt machinery. ...more

One of the best works of Malayatoor.. It is the story of struggle between beurocracy and politics . Although written in the 70s the settings etc are still familiar and reminds us of the day to day activities in the power corridor. It is a story with different layers. It is the story of how power and money changes people. But it is not only the story of power but also the mind . Being written as a serial in the then weekly .... May be because of that we get a feeling that the novel jumps between ...more

simply awesome work by the great malayattoor. its a must read book for anyone who wants to be a civil servant. this book clearly depicts the transformation of a new IAS officer when he blends into the red tape. it also take us into the family lives of the beaurocrats. the high class external outlook as well as the poor internal family affairs.

I felt it lacks a little completeness and the book ended suddenly ( even after the book had 570 pages :-P). but compared to the other service stories the

Its a 571 page book, but such a simple page turner that it will be finished much earlier than you would have thought at the start ...

The story revolves around life of two bureaucrats, both official and personal .. But above that its a story of how the 'machinary' changes an individual and how an individual fights the machinary ...

But after reading it, it somehow won't give a lasting impression and is somewhat shallow ..

a great novel with a lot of twists and turns which will make us read it, may be in a single stretch. But didnt quiet like the way it ended.Towards the end i felt as if author is trying to wrap it up quickly.felt an urgency.Otherwise one of the best novels I have read.I really like the way Malayattoor narrates the story.I would say this is a book you should have in your bookshelf.A must read.

Malayattoor being a bureaucrat himself, knows the inside stories and pens this novel with ease. The skin-deep glamour of the civil service is revealed in an elegant prose. The pressure from career and family, along with the selfish ambitions to climb up the ladder forms the base of this novel.

This is a book about beurocracy and the seemingly resultant frustrations that stems from it. It is a story about Indian Civil Service, and more importantly about the people who have become the cogs and wheels that turn the never ceasing machine of public administration. An arresting read.
