Perfect timing for getting this book since I have already started on my garden for this year. So far it's a little more educational than memoir-ish, but that's ok, hopefully I'll be able to learn some new tips/techniques! And she's local - Davis - so I'll be able to relate to her more.

Almost done - a few thoughts:

A pretty helpful book - growing a successful garden isn't as easy as it seems - need good soil, good light, effective watering, maybe even some mulch. Our yard isn't ideal, so we have...more

This was a quick and fun read. The author set the goal to start gardening in earnest and grow 75% of what she ate for the year. The book follows the year with her successes and failures as well as a few recipes tucked in here and there. At one point I was jealous she had a yard that could fit all those fruit trees as well as a patio, garden beds, chickens etc. At other times I was so happy to live no where near her geese. Oh to live where it is flat and there are no deer!

This was a fun little book about one woman's quest to feed herself (and her family, if they were willing) primarily from her own yard. I loved it and it inspired me to keep trying with my little box gardens. I'd love to learn how to do this better. In addition to her fun narrative, the book includes recipes, tips for specific plants and situations, as well as an appendix explaining how she used her gardener's notebook. I'm looking forward to getting back in the yard now!

Ms Warren decided to (mostly) feed herself for a year from her yard - a humorous accounting filled with easy-to-relate-to anecdotes. I particularly appreciated how Ms. Warren includes little tidbits of help that often sent me off on my own soon-to-bear-fruit researches of my own.

Inspiring book for those of us who cannot afford 40 acres and a mule. It is possible to grow most of your own food in your own back (and front) yard!

I enjoyed this book, although I found it overlong and a little too technical. Has some good recipes which I plan to make, but for me, not a keeper.

I found myself skimming through this one.

Fun read, loved her tone and her willingness to show all the mistakes she made! Made me wish I had the benefit of the extended Northern California growing season.

The problem with this book is not the book, it's me. I read too many urban/suburban homesteading books. And in comparison to those other books, I found this one clunky and kind of boring. In my opinion, there are many other books that have gardening tips, recipes, livestock keeping advice that are easier to read. But if you are new to this whole movement, this book will be a nice introduction for you.

LOVED this book! The anecdotes were perfectly tied into the idea of homesteading in today's society!
Kristi
Inspiring, with humorous anecdotes. I appreciated the helpful hints. I was just really hoping for pictures.
