، نحتاجُ لِـ More...

One of the best books I ever read, and I got it by coincidence! Whats so great about this book is that it speaks fairly from multiple points of view, it’s not defensive or biased. And the fact that I don’t agree with every single point in it is indicative enough! It illuminates some historical occurrences that’s almost forgotten or neglected or even deliberately ignored . It has a way of linking the past and present that makes me wish I had a time machine to visit those times!
The book has More...

To be honest, my knowledge of Islamic history is not nearly adequate enough to analyze "Lost History" as thoroughly as it deserves to be, but I have to say it was an exceptionally great read. It has made me realize how essential learning about our history is and how it may enable a brighter future. There are passages that are hard to swallow and some untraditional viewpoints presented within the text, as well as a few parts I had to read with care, but the novel holds true to it's prom More...

This wonderful book is full of history long forgotten, illuminating an age of enlightened thinking and discovery for the Muslim empire that once spanned from Spain, North Africa, throughout the Middle East, India and to China. During this time of more than 1000 years, there were centers devoted to learning and reason and in the great city centers, Muslims, Jews, Christians and other religions lived and worked side by side. An age where reason and education were valued, it gave birth to a floweri More...

This book, published by the National Geographic Society, and distributed by Random House, is very good at de-mystifying Islam for the layman. The prose flows quickly, covering a lot of ground, making this a quick read. I particularly enjoyed the diachronic approach, explaining how present-day Muslims in Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, etc., or present-day Europeans in formerly Muslim-controlled Spain, Sicily, etc., may themselves have forgotten the history behind their everyday surroundings, how the text More...

I've only read the first four chapters, but I can safely say that I have learned a lot about Muslim inventors and thinkers. Everyone who reads it will come out feeling a lot more knowledgeable. I met the author and he is a pretty cool guy. Let's support this great book and buy lots of copies!

Morgan has an obvious literary talent, so the quality of the text is usually very good. However, I do have doubts about the quality of the history presented within the pages. In order to clear these doubts, I naturally have to read much more about the topic.

That being said, I think this book manages to ignite a spark of curiosity in the mind that has no prior knowledge about the milenary Muslim legacy. At times I was amazed, at times I was moved, and the repetition of th More...

well presented. excellent, entertaining, use of language. did not focus on the scientific history only, which would make it boring, but the political background is also presented which, in my opinion, made it really interesting. in different parts of the book the author write about current day "fictional" characters, in an attempt to make the reader relate to the places mentioned(I guess!) but it was over done, and boring. nonetheless, the book present a very interesting angle to look More...

There are significant problems with the historical reading of Muslim intellectual contributions in this book. The arguments Morgan makes are interesting, but overall Morgan builds his arguments on useful, but muddle headed illusions that allow him to attribute ownership of intellectual ideas like a patent lawyer would assign intellectual property rights. It might be useful and lucrative to hold the patent on the electric light bulb, but only in a very weak sense can it be said that this is a res More...

a blueprint for a project that writer was part of in developing a book on The Prophet Mohammed. The target audience would be westerners with the main purpose of having them understand the key teachings and humanitarian life of The Prophet Mohamed rather then to convert. The difficulty to comprehend the objectives of this project by a key religious figure was one of the major obstacles. A discussion about truth in history and the teaching of history ensued.

سأكتفي بما قاله الرئيس الأسبق للولايات المتحدة الأمريكية جيمي كارتر عن هذا الكتاب : {يقدم لنا ((تاريخ ضائع))} إحدى حلقات الوصل المفقودة في قصة العالم المترابط ، حيث يظهر الكتاب الأثر الذي خلفته الحضارة الإسلامية ، وإنجازاتها عبر المشرق والمغرب}

The topic--scientific and cultural advances in Islamic culture during the time of the European Middle Ages--is excellent. The content of the book is good, and it is easily readable, but it has no documentation for its claims and the author does not clearly distinguish his own interpretive editorializing from his reporting of fact. He also writes about things (mathematics, philosophy, scientific revolution) that he does not himself understand.

I was hooked, immediately after reading the Introduction, which is something I never do. The reason he wrote this book, his choice of words was quite compelling. You are left with no choice but to read it and wonder how history, our very own, could have held so many powerful and moving lessons.

I am about to finish this book which is quickly becoming one of my most enjoyable and educational reads.

I didn't find Morgan's thesis particularly insightful; in fact, I found the work hardly academic, although I understand that it is perhaps aimed at a reader particularly biased due to prevailing Islamophobic discourse. There are literally no references to support most of the facts presented in the book and I found the fictitious setting in the start of each chapter totally unnecessary and making the discourse long-winded and unilluminating. In my opinion, comparatively more interesting and well More...

I was hoping for something a bit more thorough, and found something a lot more loopy. I understand that this is aimed at Westerners unfamiliar with Islamic history in general, but I found myself questioning the use of bizarre, fictionalized scenes at the beginning of each chapter more than I did moments of intellectual surprise. While this is definitely a good foundation on which to build some more in-depth knowledge of Islamic intellectual history, I should stress that it is a VERY rudimentary More...

This is a very good book. It uses a literary style, and you think you are reading a novel. It states a lot of historical facts along some fictions content to give it some life. The author states this clearly in the beginning of the book.

The best thing about this book is that it gives you the kind of information you cannot find it easily about the achievements done in the Islamic Empire Golden age.

amazing.
it's like revising history from highschool, but as studied by an american dude. definitely gives a new perspective.
as boring and dull i thought the book to be, it wasn't.
however, the writer does have an agenda and is trying to push it.

At times this quite interesting but it was a slow read and not my normal choice of book. I was reading it for a book club. I would recommend it for anyone who likes this sort of book. The parts I enjoyed the most were on Medicine and Architecture. The Math and Science areas were hard for me to concentrate on.
